To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEonoE KE-NELM FIELD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Ulster Chambers, 168 Regent Street, London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Means for Converting Rotary Motion into Reciprocating Motion and Vice Versa (for which I have filed an application in Great Britain on April 19, 1922, No. 11,051), of which the following is a statement.
This invention relates to mechanism such as that described in the specification of British Letters Patent No. 124,642!) wherein the reciprocatory motion of members, for
' instance, pistons, plungers and the like, is
the resultant of rotatable motion of a shaft or like device and vice versa, and is particularly applicable to air, liquid and gas pumps, compressors, ported sleeves and the like, and can be employed for steam and internal combustion engines, or, any other form of mechanism employing tWo or more J reci )rocatin members 0 era-tin a sin le rotatable member and vice versa.
In the said former specification there is described a single member designed to be simultaneously reciprocated and oscillated around an axis extending in the direction of reciprocation by a single rotatable member through the medium of a crank-pin or eccentric member slidable longitudinally with respect to the crank or rotatable member carrying it.
" According to this invention a plurality of co-planar members are each reciprocated and simultaneously oscillated around an axis extending in the direction of reciprocation and which axes may intersect one another, by means of a. single rotatable memher through the medium of a single crankpin or eccentric member and/or vice versain such a manner that, although the various reciprocating members may not reciprocate synchronously, Or in the same plane with each other, the oscillatory movement of each is in direct relationship to its reciprocating movement and can consequently be utilized for controlling inlet and discharge ports or the like, or the rotatable member may be the driven member.
In a suitable arrangement for carrying this invention into effect the crank-pin or eccentric member is pivoted or otherwise 1923. Serial No. 654,215.

Each reciprocating member will be supported in a guide or casing or the like of suitable form and dimensionsto permit of the correct functioning of the reciprocating and oscillatory turning movement and, suitably and conveniently attached thereto will be the housing containing the rotatable member. 1
My invention is also applicable to rotary engines or pumps and the like, in which case the reciprocating IHBIDibBIS, together with their casings, will be revolved within another fixed casing to which will be rigidly attached the crank shaft hereto-fore referred to as the rotatable member.
To enable the invention to be fully understood I will describe it by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a reciprocating pump constructed in accordance with the invention and embodying two cylinders each having a double acting plunger.
Figure 2 is a sectional plan View of the pump.
Figures 3 and 4c are, respectively, sections on the lines 3-3 and 4- 1, Figure 1.
a, b are the two pump cylinders which are arranged in the same plane and intersect each other at right-angles and c, d are the double acting plungers designed to be reciprocated and also oscillated within the respective cylinders a, b. e is the shaft for effecting the reciprocation of theplungers through the medium of the crank-pin 7 which is pivoted to both plungers c, d by the pivot pins 9, h respectively, the said pins being eccentrically arran ed with repect to the said plungers, so that the rotation of the shaft 6 will, in addition to reciprocating the plungers, also cause the oscillation thereof, the crank-pin f sliding longitudinally in a corresponding hole 2' in the said shaft to allow of such oscillation. The shaft is shown. as being driven by a crank-handle 1 through the medium of spur- Wheels 8, t, but it may be driven by power.
In Figures 3 and 4: I have indicated the exact relationship of the ports 7', is, Z, m of the cylinder a and piston c; it will, however, be understood that the corresponding ports of the cylinder Z) and piston (Z will be similarly arranged.
Although I have described a pump in which a pair of co-planar cylinders containing a pair of plungers are designed to be reciprocated and oscillated by a rotary shaft through the medium of a crank-pin or eccentric longitudinally slidable member, it is to be understood that more than two such co-planar cylinders may be employed and that parallel with such co-planar cylinders may be arranged another similar set of cylinders and plungers operable by the same crank-pin or eccentric member or by another such member at the other end of the shaft.
It is also to be understood that, although I have described my invention in connection with a pump, my said invention is not restricted to such use but may be employed for steam and internal combustion engines, or in other instances where it is required to impart both a reciprocating and an oscillating movement. Furthermore, the mechanism can be employed for converting the re ciprocating and oscillating movements of two or more reciprocating members into a movement of rotation.
Claims:
1. Mechanism of the type hereinbefore referred to including a luralit of 00- planar members, members eccentrically secured to said co-planar members for reciprocating and simultaneously oscillating said co-planar members through'and about intersecting axrs, and a crank pin through which said members pass.
'2. Mechanism of the type hereinbefore referred to, including a plurality of cylinders arranged in the same plane and intersecting each other at right angles, a plurality of double acting plungers adapted to be reciprocated and simultaneously oscillated within said respective cylinders, through intersecting axes, a shaft for reciprocating said plungers, having a crank pin and pivot pins eccentrically mounted in said plungers, and passing through said crank pin.
