SCAFFOLDING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
Application filed September 2, 1919. Serial No. 321,105.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AGHILLE ANDRE, builder, residing at Ixelles, Brussels, Belgium, 125 Rue Mignot Delstanche, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scaffolding; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others Skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked therein which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in Scaffolding.
In the scaffolding of this invention the work platform is movable, and guided between posts or uprights, its displacement be ing obtained by means of a suitable mechanical device adapted to be operated either from the ground or from the said platform.
This platform is carried by'frames arranged between the posts of each pair and on which the mechanical device acts. It is formed of planks arranged perpendicular 'to the building to be erected or repaired and supported on beams fixed on the lower sup porting bars of said frames. These beams may vary in length according to the length of the scaffolding.
The mechanical device for operating the scaffolding may consist of an endless screw, or chains and pulleys or tackles, or of liftin jacks, etc.
The invention is more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of construction,
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a modified form of construction,
Fig. 3 is a detail on an enlarged scale.
In each of the forms of construction the scaffolding comprises a certain number of posts or guides 1 formed of channel section, the sides or flanges of which are extended inwardly. The posts of each pair are connected at the upper part by transverse bars 2; the posts situated on one side of the Scaffolding may further be interconnected by means of panels with diagonals or the like which are not shown.
Each of the pairs of posts serves for guiding a sash-like or rectangular open frame designated as 3 in Fig. 1 and 3 in Fig. 2. The uprights of each of which have crossheads 4 or 4 engaged in the channel parts of the posts.
The frames 3 and 3 are provided with supportlng bars 8" which support angle irons or rails 5 arranged to extend longitudinally of a building to be constructed and carrying the planks 6, forming a platform on which workmen can Stand and walk. The frames are further provided with stand ards 3 and short horizontal bars 3 which support on a higher level angle irons or ralls 7 on which the planks 8 are placed, these planks or rails forming a staging in tended for receiving building materials. A carriage 9 is also provided which is mounted on wheels which travel on one of the angle irons 7 and on an angle iron 10 thelatter being carried by the upright sides of the frames 3 or 3' next to the side of the buildmg. The inner angle iron 7 constitutes one track-rail, and the angle iron 10 constitutes the other track-rail of the track on which the carriage can travel from end to end of the scaffold. There is a clear space between these rails from end to end so that workman can walk between these rails. The carriage forms a table on which the workman can place materials and tools and carries in addition a motor trough 23. In this way the workman can always have at his disposal the materials placed in reserve on the stage 8 while he causes his carriage 9, carrying materials which he intends to use immediately, to travel before him in proportion as he changes his position.
cans must further be provided for Supporting the various frames and causing them to risein proportion as the building advances. For this purpose in the form of construction shown in Fig. 1, pulleys 01 tackles 11 are suspended from the upper cross-bars 2, and the frames 3 are carried by the hooks of these tackles. Raising of the platform and Staging is, in this case, effected by pulling simultaneously from the standing or work platform on the chains of the various pulleys or tackles 11, taking care to displace the various frames 3 to an equal extent.
For supporting the frames during intervals of rest pawl arrangements (Fig. 3), may be used. Each of the osts 1 has a toothed plate 12 attached to it with which simultaneous rotation of the various screws '15. For this purpose each of them is operated by a bevel wheel 19'gearing with a pinion 20, the shaft of which carries a chain wheel 21. These various wheels 21 are connected by a chain 22 so that if one cfthem be actuated by means of a crank handle 18,
all the screws are operated to an equal extent.
When the frames have reached the upper part of the posts 1, a fresh tier of posts may be mounted above them. The crossbars 2 and the supports of the pulleys or screws are then moved to the upper part. The screws are in this case elongated by means of suitable lengthening pieces. According to the length of the building to be constructed a larger or smaller number of pairs of posts 1 will be employed; if the distance between certain of these pairs differs from the distance which has been selected as the normal distance apart then varying lengths of supporting angle iron 5 rods 5, 7 and 10 will be used.
What I claim is: 1. In a scaffold, a platform for workmen frames.
to stand on, a taging for holding building materials, a plurality of rectangular sashlike frames, said platform beingseated on the lower bars of said frames and extending from one upright side of each frame to the middle part of the said lower bars, supporting bars united with the other upright sides of said frames and extending horizontally inward above said lower bars, said staging being supported on said supporting bars and extending from said other upright side of each frame toand terminating at the middle part of each frameypairs of upright guides for said frames, the upright sides of each frame being slidably engaged with a' pair of said upright guides, cross bars each supported by a pair of said upright guides, and lifting means suspended from said cross bars and engaged with said 2. In the structure defined by claim 1, a
track-rail provided along the inner edge of said staging; and a track-rail parallel to the first mentioned track-rail and spaced inwardly therefrom to provide a clear space between said rails for permitting a workman to walk between said rails, said track rails being adapted to slidably mount a carriage adapted to carry building materials.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' AGHILLE ANDRE.
