To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, DENNIS L. DRISCOLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Coalinga, in the'county of Fresno and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fishing Appliances for Use in Drilling Operations, of which the following is a specification. I
'My invention relates to a fishing tool employed in well drilling operations and more particularly to that type of tool commonly termed anovr-shot tool, and is particularly employed in rotary drilling operations.
The principal object of this invention is toprovide a construction'of thespring arm orfinger type, the springs of which areopposed withtheir free ends inclined toward each other, providing a variable opening between the free ends for the reception and engagement thereby of a member'therebetween on the lowering of the toolwithin a well over the objector article to be removed on the withdrawal of thetool. Another object is to provide spring arms somounted as to incline toward eachother. without forming the springs or arms with curves or bends,
thereby'providing spring arms having great resiliency, strength, and lifting power and relatively straight throughout their entire length,v thereby overcoming the liability of crystallizing or breaking when heavy objects or members are lifted thereby. A further object is to provide an improved mounting for the spring arms, whereby" the same may be detachably associated with an operating member," 7 1t With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of'the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawings, I providea suitable tubular steel shelll to the upper end of which is threaded a tubular mounting member 2 for ralsing and lowering the shell within a well. The lower end of the shell is formed on its interior with a flange or seat 3 having a beveled under surface 4: and on the flange 3 is adapted to rest the lower edge of an over-shot ring 5 having a beveled under sur-' face 6 inclined toward the opening in the center thereof, the walls 4: and 6 guiding an object over which the tool is lowered toward the center of the over-shot ring 5.
"The ring 5 is maintained seated on its flange 3 by asuitable liner .7 of a diameter slightly less than the interior'diameter of the shell 1 above the shoulder .3, and said liner 7 is of a widthto rest 'onthe upper surface of the ring-5 and to contact with the lower edge of the support 2, as .in Fig. lof the drawings. This construction enables'the ring 5 to be removed'from within the shell 1 at such time as the member 2 is detached from the shell.
At spaced points on its outer surface the ring 5 is formed with the vertically disposed inwardly inclined arm receivingslots 8 having parallel side walls 9 and a relatively straight inner wall 10. In each of said slots is adapted to be received the base} or lower end of a spring arm 11 preferably constructed of relatively thin flatsprinq' material and of a length to project a considerable distance above the upper edge of the ring 5. The arms 11, illustrated as four in number in the particular embodiment of the invention, are free from bends or curves and are relatively straight, inclining toward each other to provide at their upper ends a relatively small openingbetween the same of a diameter less than that of the opening of the ring 5.3
The spring arms 11 are held at their bases within the slots 8 with their inner faces in contact with the innerinclined faces 10 of the respective slots by suitable keepers 12, wedge shaped in vertical section. with their outer surfaces curved transversely to complete the configuration of the outer wall of the ring 5, and with their inner faces inclined to Contact with the outer surfaces of the base of the respective spring arms 11, as
illustrated in the drawings. The keepers 12 have threaded therein, to project laterally from the inner face thereof, suitable retaining studs 13' which pass through openings 14 in the respective spring arms and are received within openings 15 in the ring 5 adjacent the upper ends of the respective slots 8.
This construction provides a uniform bear ing for the-bases of the respective arms 11 and retains the arms in an inclined position upwardly as in the drawings, disposing the arms at an incline without necessitating the bending or curving thereof.
This construction provides an over-shot fishing tool, wherein spring arms are employed, which are adapted to frictionally engage an object over which the same is lowered, and of a diameter larger than the opening formed between the free ends of the spring arms, and of a diameter less than that of the opening of the ring 5, and it will be apparent that the lifting strain placed on said arms is distributed longitudinally thereof, enabling said arms to support heavy loads without crystallizing or buckling, due to their straight configuration, which is not the case witharms of a curved or bent construction. a v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Let ters Patent is 1. A fishingtool for .the described purpose, the same comprising a ring, a plurality of relatively flat straight'spring arms extending upwardly -therefrom at an incline toward each other, and seouredtheretoat their lower ends, and a tubular shell provided on its interior with a supporting seat and formed with an interior diameter above said seat slightly greater than the exterior diameter of the ring and within which said ring and spring arms are removably positioned as a unit.

Afishing tool for the described purpose, the same comprising a ring formed in its peripheral surface witha plurality of seats the inner faces of which are upwardly and inwardly inclined, a relatively flat, straight, spring arm received at its lower end within each of-said seats and arranged with their free ends extending upwardly above the ring and disposed at an inclination corresponding to that of the inner face of the respective seats, a keeper received within each of said seats and its outer surface of a transverse contourcorresponding to that of the ring, a stud carried by eac keeper forjpositioning through an aperture in the base of its associated spring and said ring for precluding longitudinal movement of the springs, and a tubular shell within which said ring is removably mounted.
4. A fishing tool for the described purpose comprising a tubular shell having parallel opposite inner wall surfaces and formed on its interior with a toolsupporting seat, a tool for removably positioning within said shell and consisting of a ring of a diameter to snugly fit therein with its outer wall surface parallel with the inner wall'surface of the shell, said ring provided in its outer surface with a plurality of upwardly disposed inwardly inclined seats, astraight spring arm removably held at its lower end within each seat, and a member for retaining said. arms within their'seats and for filling the outer portion of the seats to carry out the contour of said ring.
