Description
L. G. BAYRER.
DROP HAMMER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 26,1920.
Patented -Oct 11, 1921.
LOUIS GARFIELD .'BAYRER, OF`HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, .ASSIGNORA TO THEBILLIN GS & SPENCER COMPANY, OF` HARTFORD,
NECTIGUT.
CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CON- DROP-HAMMER.
Application led July 26,
To @ZZ whom it may concern.'
Be itknown t-hat l, Louis Gr. BAYRER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drop- Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to improvements in board clampsfor drop hammers such as shown in my Patent No. 1,225,695, dated May`8th, 1917.
The invention has as its vobject to' provide a stronger and more eflicient device of this sort.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the head of a machine equipped with my invention.
F ig. 2 is a sectional View therethrough taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view.
Referring to the drawings, c denotes the top of the machine; o the head frame secured thereto and in which the board clamp is mounted. c, d denote respectively the active and inactive clamp members adapted to grip the board e. The clamp members slide on the surfaces 10 of the frame 5.
The bifurcated outer end of the active clamp member c is pivotally connected at one end of a link 15 by a pin 16. The other end of the link is positioned between, and is pivotally connected by a pin 17 to the arms of a yoke 18 pivoted in the frame Z) on a supporting pin 19 one end of which projects through and beyond a boss 21 eX- tending from the side of the frame Z). Projecting laterally from one arm of the yoke 18 and through an elongated slot 22 in one side of the frame Z) is a hub 23. One end of the pin 17 extends through and beyond this hub and the other end extends into a slot 24; in the other side of the frame. 25 is an operating lever pivoted on the pin 19 and connected between its ends to the pin 17. Cotter pins 27 may be employed. to prevent the lever from slipping off the pins. This lever extends to the rear of the machine and its free end is connected by a rod 26 to a foot treadle or similar device.
It will be seen that the yoke 18 and link 15 form a toggle and when the lever 25 is swung upwardly this toggle is broken to release the boa-rd e. The manner in which Specification of Letters Patent.
`Patented Oct. 11, 1921 1920. serial No. 399,128.
The inactive clamp member d is pivotally connected by a. pin 30 between the arms of a sliding yoke 31, the outer end of which has a. lug 32 extending into a socket 33 provided in the head frame. 34 is a wedge lo cated in the socket and engaging the lug 32 so as to hold the inactive clamp member in adjusted position. The inactive clamp member has a limited pivotal movement about the pin 30 so that it will not bind against the board e while the latter' is being raised. This pivotal movement is limited by the engagement of the rib 35 on the knuckle of the inactive member against the body portion of the yoke 31. The active clamp member c and the sliding yoke 31 are held against 1vertical displacement by the overhanging ips 36.
It is, of course, obvious that my invention is susceptible of various modifications and changes which are within the spirit of the invention without departing from the scope of the following claims, it being understood that the present disclosure of my invention is by way of illustration only and it is not to be taken as restrictive of my conception.
I claim as my invention 1. In a machine of the character described, the combination with a frame, an active member of a board clamp slidably mounted therein, and a toggle between said frame and active member, of an operating lever pivoted to the frame and engaged with said toggle at a point between its connections with said frame Vand active board clamp member.
2. In a machine of the character described,
the combination with a frame, an active member of a board clamp slidably mounted therein, a yoke pivoted in said frame, and a link pivoted at its opposite ends to said yoke and member respectively, of an operating lever engaged with said yoke at a point between its connection with said frame and the connection between Said link and active board clamp member.
3. In a machine of the character described, a frame, an active member of a board clamp slidably mounted therein, a toggle between said frame and active member, a lever pivoted at its end to said frame, means for connecting said to gle intermediate its ends to said lever, an a connection between the free end of said lever and a foot treadle.
. 4. In a machine of the character described, the combination -with a Jframe, an active member of a board clampl slidably mounted therein, and a toggle between said frame and member and including a pin pivotally connecting the parts of the toggle, of a staactive member of a tionarly pivoted operating lever connected to said pin. l
5. In a machine of the character described, a. frame having an opening in one side, an board clamp slidably mounted in the frame, a yoke pivoted in said frame, a link between said yokeand active member, a pin connecting said link and yoke and extending through said opening, and a lever pivoted at one end to said frame and connected to the outer end of said pin.
6. In a machine of the character described, a frame, an active member of a board clamp slidingly mounted therein, a yoke, a supporting pin therefor, a link pivotally connected at one end to said active member, a connecting pin between the other end of said link and said yoke, a lever pivoted at one end on said supporting pin and engaged with said connecting pin, and a connection between the other end of said lever and a foot treadle.
