To allcvhom it may concem:
Be it known that I, VALENTIN JAKOB ODHNER, a subject of the Kin of Sweden, and resident of Karlaplan 2, tockholm, in
the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Devices in Calculating-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. I
In calculating machines .it is of impor.-- tance that the different parts, serving for the performance of the calculating operations, are prevented from operating, if any of the parts is in a wrong position, as, otherwise some part or parts may be broken and miscalculating take place. This invention relates to a device in calculating machines, provided with calculating wheels and with a carriage, in which registering wheels and indicating disks are provided together with a shaft adapted to return the registering wheels and indicating disks to zero, which device prevents the performance of the calculating operation, if the said shaft is in wrong posit-ion.
Figure 1 in the accompanying drawing shows in an end View so much of the calculating machine, as is nece ary to illustrate the invention. Figs. 2 and 3 show the parts belonving to the invention in top views and indid erent positions. Fig. 4 shows in a top view a modified form of the invention.
1 is the shaft, carrying the calculatin wheels 2, and 3 is the shaft rotatabl y an slidably mounted in the carriage 4 and carrying the re istering wheels and the indicating disks. he shaft 1 is rotated, as usually, by a crank, manuallyoperated and a gearing, The shaft 3 is provided with ordinary wings 4 or the like for the rotating of the same. As theshaft is rotateda projection 5 provided on the same slides on an oblique stationary surface 6 on the carriage, so that the shaft is moved longitudinally for a distance, during which movement pins on the shaft are brought into engagement with pins provided on the registermg wheels and return the said wheels and the indicating disks to zero. After the rotation through onerevolution the shaft 3 is removed longitudinally to its original position by a spring 7.
On a pin or shaft 8 a disk 9 is rotatably mounted. A toothed wheel 10. is flied to or made integral with the said diskand meshes with a toothed wheel 11 on the shaft 1. In
the drawing the said toothed wheels 10, 11 have the same number of teeth, so that the d1sk 9 is rotated through one revolution during each revolution of the shaft 1. in the edge of the disk 9 a notch 12 is provided. A .bar 13 is located in guides provided in the carriage 4: and slidable longitudinally of the same, the said bar extending through the notch 12 of the disk 9 and provided with notches 14: in such positions, that, as the carriage is moved into its difierent positions, while the shaft 3 is in its normal position, one of the said notches leis located opposite to the disk 9, as shown in Fig. 2; On the carriage a two-armed lever 15 is swingably mounted, which by means of a slot and pin joint 16 is connected with the bar 13 and by means of a fork 17 engages a circular flange 18 on the shaft 3.
The described device operates in the following manner. As the shaft 3 is in its normal position, Fig. 2, and the carriage l is properly adjusted, one of the notches 1d of the bar 13 is opposite to the disk 9'. Consequently, the latter may be rotated without being revented by the bar 13 and also permits t e calculating wheels to be rotated. As the shaft 3 is rotated and is moved longitudinally for returning the registering wheels and indicating disks to zero, the shaft 3 by means of the flange 18'and the lever 15 moves the bar 13 longitudinally, so that one of its solid parts enters the notch 12 of the disk 9, as shown in Fig. 8. If the shaft 3 is rotated through a whole revolution or to its starting position, it is pushed backward by the spring 7 and consequently returns the bar 13 into its normal position with one of its notches 14 located opposite to the disk 9. If on the other hand the shaft 3 is not rotated through a whole revolution and consequently the registering wheels and the indicating disks are not returned to Zero, one of the solid parts of the bar 3 remains in the notch 12 of the disk 9, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the bar prevents the disk 9 and the calculating wheels from-being rotated. If the carriage 4 is not shlfted into one of its proper positions, the bar 13 which is moved together with the carriage, will be located in such position, that onc of its solid parts is located in the notch 12 of the disk 9, so that also in this case the calculating wheels are locked.
If on the other hand, the calculating wheels are not rotated through a whole revolution, i. e., the crank mentioned above has not been returned into its normal position, a solid part of the edge of the disk 9 will be located inone of the notches 14 of the bar 13 and revents the shaft 3 from being rotated an the carriage 4: from being moved.
Consequently, the described device insures, that the calculating wheels as well as the shaft 3 always must be returned into their normal positions respectively and that the carriage always must be adjusted in proper position, in order that the machine may operate.
The form of the invention shown in Fig. 4 differs from that described above only by the bar 13 by means of an arm 18 being rigidly connected with a sleeve 19, inclosing the shaft 3 and partaking in its longitudinal motion.
, Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a calculating machine the combination with calculating wheels, a carriage, registering wheels provided in the said carriage and a rotatable axially movable shaft for returning the said registering wheels to zero, of a catching device and means conecting the said device with the said shaft in such manner that its functionating is dependent on axial movement of the shaft thesaid catching device locking the calculating wheels, when the carriage is in proper position and the said shaft is in wrong position and locking the said shaft when the calculating wheels are in wrong position.
2. In a calculating machine the combination with the calculating wheels, a carriage, registering wheels provided in the said carriage, a rotatable shaft for returning the said registering wheels to zero, which shaft is slidable longitudinally, a preferably circular disk, rotating with the said calculating wheels, a notch provided in the edge of the said disk, a bar, provided in the said carriage and extending longitudinally of the same, said bar cooperating with the notch of the said disk, notches provided in the said bar and corresponding to different positions of the said carriage, of means supporting the said bar in a slidable manner and means connecting the bar with the said shaft, so that it is moved longitudinally as the shaft is moved longitudinally, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3.- In a calculating machine the combination with the calculating wheels, a carriage, registering wheels provided in the said carriage, a rotatable shaft for returning the said registering wheels to zero, which shaft is slidable longitudinally, a preferably circular disk, rotating with the said calculating wheels, anotch provided in the said disk, a bar, provided in the said carriage and eX- tending longitudinally of the same, the said bar coiiperating with the notch of the said disk, notches provided in the said bar and corresponding to different positions of the said carriage, of means supporting the said bar in a slidable manner, a flange on the said shaft and a two-armed lever connecting the said bar with the said flange.
4:. In a calculating machine, a movable carriage, an axially movable shaft carried by the carriage, a spring for moving said shaft in one direction, a cam device for moving the shaft in the opposite direction, a disk carried by said cam device, a second shaft carrying a wheel provided with a peripheral notch, a sliding bar coiiperating with said wheel, adapted to engage said notch for prevent- .ing rotation of said wheel, and provided with a notch designed to register with the wheel to permit its rotation, and a connection between said disk and said bar, whereby rotation of said cam device will cause said bar to lock the wheel against rotation, and whereby the wheel when in register with the notch of the bar will prevent move ment of the bar and rotation of the cam device.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
