T all whom may concern Be it known that I, George J. :HEBNER, a citizen of the United States of America, rein the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ad justab'l-e Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the present invention is the provision of an adjustable leg or foot for ladders the better enabling them for ready use upon uneven and sloping ground well as upon inclined roofs of buildings, either or both ends of the ladder being made adjustable in length in this manner as may be found desirable, for different working conditions.
A further object of the invention is to pro-' vide a simple and inexpensive means for extending either or bothrails of a ladder to the desired length and rigidly maintaining the same in position for use ready for quick and easy adjustment whenever desired.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an extension for the rails-of lad ders arranged with secured locking means for holding the same in adjusted positions thereby providing a strong and safe construction whereby ladders maybe mounted upon inclined surfaces without the liability of slipping or falling.
ll ith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the acconr panying drawings, and then claimed.

I have illustrz'rted a ladder having opposite sides or rails connected by the usual rounds 11 with adjustable legs or extensions 12 mounted upon the outer faces of the rails 10 adjacent the free ends 13 of the rails at either end of the ladder.
The leg'12 is provided with a V-shaped notch 14 forming two points 15 at. the end thereof, adapted for mounting upon the sloping surface of a roof or the ground for preventing the ladder in use. The outer face of each leg 12, is provided with a row of rectangular sockets 16 with severed partitions l7 therebetween, said sockets 16 being adapted to receivethe rectangular heads 18 of bolts 19 projecting through a central longitudinal slot 20 in the bottoms of the sockets 16 and through perforations 21 in the adjacent rail 10 of the ladder. Partitions 17 being severed provide slots 22- between the partition with the slots 22 communicating with the slots 20 whereby the bolts 19 may be projected with the heads 18 thereof outwardly of the sockets 16, permitting the longitudinal adjustment of the leg 12 upon the adjacent side rail 10. hen the leg 12 is at the proper adjustment with the desired length of the leg '12. projecting outwardly of the rail end 13, the heads 18 are positioned within the adjacent socket 16 and the lock nuts 23 tightened upon the bolts 15) at the inner face of said carrying rail 10.
A guide rib 24 extends through rectangular perforations 25 throughthe bolt heads 18 and the said heads being threaded upon the ribs 2 1, are slidable thereon to their adjusted positions, it being noted that the rib 24s is substantially square in cross section being of a diameter permitting the rib to slide inwardly and outwardly of the partition slots 22 but preventing any rotation of the rib 24 when positioned within said slots lVhen it is desired to adjust the leg 12, the nuts 13, are released and the rib 24 pulled outwardly of the slots 22 bringing the heads 18 of the bolts 19 out of the socket 16, and permitting the leg 12. to be longitudinally adjusted upon the adjacent rail 10. The rib 2% is then slidably moved through the heads 18, permitting the insertion of the rib into the slots 2-2 with the opposite ends 26 of the rib 2 1 within the end ones of said sockets 16 and with the heads 1.8 in two of the other sockets so that the nuts 23 may be readily tightened upon from shipping when side portions of each the bolts 19 and the leg 12 rigidly secured to the ladder rail 10. An exceedingly strong construction for an extension leg is provided in this manner, but one in which the extension leg may be easily and quickly adjusted for providing a serviceable mounting member or toot tor the ladder when 1n use.
The rib 24c prevents the bolts 19 from turning during the adjustment of the leg 12 making it easier to position the heads 18 of the bolts 19 within the sockets 16 at each adjustmentof the device.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to bethe preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms, modifications and arrangements of a the parts may and desire to secure the slots in the bottoms of the sockets, and
shifting through the slots between said sockets during the adjustment of the leg upon the rail, the heads of the bolts havingrectangular openings therethroughand a rectangular rib slidable adapted for be made without departing through the openings of said heads normally positioned within the slots between the sockets when the device is in use.
A device of the class described comprising a ladder having"- a side rail, a bolt extending through said rail with a rectangular head outwardly of the rail, an extension leg upon the outer face of the rail having a central longitudinal slot there through adapted for receiving the bolt and with rectangular sockets adapted for the seating reception of the bolt heads therein 7 when the leg is adjusted upon the rail, a lock nut upon the bolt at the inner face of the rail, the leg having partitions between the sockets and with said slot extending through said partitions, a rectangular guide rib removably positioned within the portions of the slot. within. said partitions, the said heads having retangular openings therethrougli with the rib slidably projecting through said openings,
