To all whom it mayV concern Beit known that I, ARTHUR BELL, a citi zen of the United States, and a resident of Ridgefield Park, in the county of VBergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Box-Finishing Machine, of which the followingA is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has relation. to box inachinery and refers more particularly to a finishing machine for paper boxes y,which are provided with exteriorfcoverings.
According to the present practice, after the outer sides of Vthe box or lid has been covered, the operation of turning the edges of the covering within the mouth of the box and pressing the same thereto has been almost universally accomplished by hand principally due to the great variance in the sizes of the boxes vand lids.V
This invention contemplates and seeks for some of its principal objects to produce at a nominal cost an efiicient finishing machine for this purpose by means of which the output and production will be materially increased with a minimumnumber of employees; a machinev which will function to obtain a more perfect finish to the boxtlian is now possible by hand labor; a machine inwhichk means is provided to compensate for the great variance in the sizes ofthe boxes and lids, and a machine in which means ofadjustment can be obtained whereby the same will properly handle boxes and lids made from material of different thicknesses. l/Vith the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the'novel` construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following Vspecification, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being'understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually shown herein, to the full extent indicated by the Lgeneral meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed and by variations in the phraseology of thesame.

The manipulating wheels 20 are keyed to the pinion shaft for the purpese of actuating the pinions to secure the adjustment of the tables. The backing plate is provided at its opposite ends with forwardly extending guide arms 21 disposed at Va right angle thereto. By this arrangement boxes of Vvarious heights may be handled by the machine by adjusting the tables vertically to bring the upper edge of the box in a plane tovregister with the upper edge of thebacking plate. An elastic band or coiled contractile spring 41 is designed to operatively connect the studs 39 and 40for normally effecting the movement of the finggers to engage the shoulder 38 with the retaining bar. The il-shaped frame is provided with a, rearwardly projecting stem 42, the free extremity of which is maintained in contact-with a cam 43 mounted on the cam shaft 44 by means of the springs 45 which are respectively secured at their opposite extremities to the fra-me 22 and the side rails 12. It will thus beseen that a simple and effective machine has been devised for turningiii and pressing the edges of the box covering which is entirely automatic'in its operation and which will operate in connection with boxes of various heights, widths and lengths. It is obvious from the con` struction that where a large order of standard sizes of boxes are to be yoperated on, theV fingers may be dispensed with and in lieu thereof plates may be employed entirely. In this instance the width of one of the plates will represent the width of the interior of one dimension of the box while the width of a pair of combined plates will represent the length of the interior dimension of the boxes.
