siding at New Britain, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Duplicating-Matcfhine, of which the following is a specifica- My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in duplicating machines of a type which is of particular utility in the duplication of key-bittings. It is my aim to produce a device of this type which is exceedingly compact, simple in form, easily operated and which will perform the duplicating function with the greatest accuracy. In the accompanying drawings I have shown my invention in one preferred form in which- Figure 1 is aside elevation of the complete machine. 1 Fig. 2 is a plan viewthereof.

'6 1s a fly-wheel which may have a handle 7 for I .manual operation and which may have pcholder being-,located in a plane somewhat in advance of the other, the advanced holder being in front of the cutter 4 while the other holder is in front of a positioning device 10. This positioning device 10 has a nose at the front side facing the last-mentioned holder, and this positioning nose stands in a plane somewhat outside of the edge of the cutter 4. By outside I mean farther away from the axis of the shaft 2 than the edge of said cutter. The degree of offset of the positioning device relatively to the edge of the cutter should correspond to the degree to which the outside holder is offset from the holder which faces the cutter. The positioning device is provided with a laterally extending rod 11 which fits into a bearing 12 on the main body of the frame. 13 is a set screw which constitutes one simple means for securing the rod ll in the bearing 12 when ,the proper adjustment of the nose of the positioning device hasbeen established. 14 is an adjusting screw at thetail end of the positioning device 10, the lower end of the screw 14 bearing on the frame 1 in such a manner that by turning the screw 14 up or down the positioning device will be tilted device and bears against the end of the hearing 12. By means of the screws 14-15 the exact position of the nose of the positioning device is established and then the screw 13 is turned down hard.
The holder on the carriage which is in front of the -cutter 4 is ada ted to hold a key blank, while the other holder located in front of the positioning device 10 is adapted to hold a key which it is desired to duplicate and which performs the function of a model in the operation of the device. 16 represents a key blank of the fiat key type mounted in the first mentioned holder, while 17- represents the finished fiat key which it is desired to duplicate, this key being carried by the second mentioned holder. Any suitable jaw mechanism may be provided for each of the holders, but in the preferred construction disclosed herein and devised by me, I have so constructed this mechanism that it will take either a fiat key such as would be made from a fiat blank such as shown in Fig. 9, or an ordinary key such as would be made from the blank 18 shown in Fig. 10. I have shown one of these holders in the detail views, Figs. 3 to 5, in which 19 represents the base of the holder having two ears 1'9 19 at the rear side for carrying a pivot 20 upon which is mounted a hinged presser piece 21. 22 is a seat which is also hinged on the pivot 20 and is arranged between the presser iece 21 and the base 19. 23 is a screw-w ich is'carried by the base 19 and projects freely up through holes in the seat 22 and the presser piece 21. 24 is a wing nut mounted on the screw 23. 25 is a spring arranged between the seat 22 and the base 19, which spring ma be of any suitable design and simply unctions to normally tilt theseat 22 up into the position shown in Fig. 3 when the wing nut 24 is re tracted. -When the seat 22 is in the position shown in Fig. 3, its front edge acts as a back stop or rear seat for the back edge of the flat key blank 16, so that wh n the resser piece 21 is forced down it wi l tight y clamp'the rear edge of the blank 16 and hold the front edge exposed to the cutting action of the cutter 4.- correspondingly, when the key 17 which is to be duplicated is laced in the I other holder, it in turn will be 61d with its exposed bitted edge facing up with the nose on the positioning device 10. Pivotally mounted in front of the holder for the key blank is a gauge 26, while pivotally mounted in front of the-holder for the key 17 is a corresponding gage 27.
In settin up the machine for operation, the holder 1n front of the positionin device 10 is open and the key 17 is ut in p ace underneath the presser 21. The gage 27 is then swung up so that the nose on the end of the same w1ll rest on the front edge of the key. The key is then'pushed endwise until the stop shoulder, where the handle or bow meets the shank of the key, engages with the nose on the gage 27 The back edge of the key is then firmly pressed against the\ back stop formed by the seat 22 and then the wing nut 24 is turned down so that the presser will tightly grip the key. The next step is to introduce the blank 16 into the other holder this being done in precisely the same way that the ke was fitted into the other holder. When t e cutter engages'the edge of the blank it will cut into the edge of the same so as to reproduce therein precisely the same bitting that is on the edge of the key 17 because it is obvious that as the carriage is moved forward and swung from side to side, the said carriage will be positioned, by the positioning device .10 in'such a way that the cutter must necessarily duplicate in the key blank the bitting existing in7 the edge of the key or model 17. 28 is a handle for moving the carriage. This handle is pivotally secured intermediate its length to the underside of the carriage and at its forward or inner end it is pivotally connected to the uide rod 8 so that the free end of the hand e may be rocked hp and down and swung from side to side to impart a corresponding movement to the carriage.v
When the machine is setup with the key and key blank in place in their respective holders, the operator grasps the free end of the handle 28 and swings the carriage upward and forward so as to bring the edge of the key blank into contact with the cutter 4, which is then being revolved by the'shaft and left the irregular edge of the key or model17 travels along the nose of the positioning device and at the same time the cute ter 4 will cut into the edge of the blank so as to fashion .the same to correspond precisely with the bitted edge of said key or model 17 If is disilrled to cutdbittifigs into 315 ordinary e o t ety ea a te to'anor inary tumbler lock, a ke y blank lected and placed inthe holder in front of the cutter. A similar type of key' which it .is desired to duplicate is laced in the other holder, and in this case the stem of the key and key blank will be seated in two complementary grooves near the forward edges of the presser piece 21 and the seat 22, said grooves bein indicatedat 21 and 22 respectively, Figs. 4 and 5. While I have shown my duplicating machine in its preferred form, it should be understood that I may make a wide variety of changes and modifications in the various parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. c
It will be noted that the machine is exceedingly compact in form by reason of the factthat the holders are offset, instead of being arranged in lateral alinement. This has the effect ofcutting down the proper tions of the machine and has been found to reduce manufacturing costs, in addition to the other advantages herein enumerated.
What I claim is: v
1. In a duplicating machine, a rotary cutter, a positioning device arranged at one side of, and outside of said cutter, a carriage, holding means thereon for a blank and a model, said carriage being movable to and fro and laterally said holding means being constructed to hold said blank and model in proper position relatively to said cutter and positioning device.
2.
