DEVICE FOR FASTENING BELTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 20, 1921 Application filed February 14, 1919. Serial No. 276,958.
To allwhomitmay concern:
Be it known that I, F RANK. W. CARLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oilfields, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for F astening Belts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which. form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in belt fasteners and consists of a simple and efficient device of this nature, so arranged that the ends of the belt may be held securely within a holder without the necessity of perforating the belt and thereby weakening the same.
More specifically, the present invention consists in the provision of a rectangular outlined holder member which is longitudinally'slotted with the opposite walls tapering and having portions of the edges of. the holder recessed away, and in the provision of a. wedgeshaped member extending the length of the slot, and having its opposite faces fluted, cooperating'with the inclined walls of the holder to retain the ends of the belt.
My invention is illustrated in the. accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application and in which: v
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the application of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the fastening device, and
Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the holder and Wedge-shaped member respectively, and Fig. 5 is a detail view in side elevation of the holder.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter:
A designates a holder, made of any suit-- able material, preferably of rectangular shape and provided with an elongated slot B, the opposite walls of which are inclined relative to each other. C designates a wedge member extending the length of saidslot and which member is hollow provided with transverse partitions dividing the same into cells. The outer inclined faces of said member are fluted or ribbed to effect a better frictional contact with the belt, which it is adapted to clamp against the inclined wall of the holder. baid wedge-shaped member is preferably hollow reinforced with bridges C to strengthen and brace the same and forming a plurality of sockets C, and the lower marginal edges of the holder are recessed away as at E in order to pass by an oval pulley about which the belt to which the fastener is attached is adapted to pass.
lVhat I claim to be new is:
A belt fastener comprising a rectangular frame having an interior of trapezoidal cross section and provided with a plane outer face at the base of the trapezoid and longitudinally curved at the side opposite the plane face, and a wedge having fluted sides at substantially the angle of the inclined walls of the trapezoid, the wedge provided with sockets in its base and the base of the wedge when inserted being substantially coplanar with the said plane faces, the interior end walls of the frame closely fitting and guiding the ends of the wedge.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK W. CARLS ON.
