IMPROVEMENT IN BUREAUS AND lRONlNG-TABLES COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,101, dated May 20, 1873; application filed April 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. ADAMS,
of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bureau, Ironing-Table, and Skirt-Board combined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved bureau, ironing-table, and skirtboard, with the top or lid thrown back, and showing the skirt-board placed in position for ironing; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view, with the top or lid closed, and showing the skirtboard placed in recesses.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined bureau, ironin g-table, and removable skirt-board, arranged with a set of drawers or shelves extending to about the center of the bureau to a partition running longitudinally with the rear side of the bureau, thus forming a recess or receptacle, which is covered with a top or lid, which is hinged to the stationary top of the bureau. But that my invention may be more fully understood, I will proceed to describe the same more in detail.
A represents the receptacle in rear of the drawers or shelves, occupying about one-half of the entire bureau, and is provided with recesses or sockets in its rear side for the reception of the skirt-board when the same is not in use, and is also provided with gains, formed in the top of the inner side of the said receptacle, into which the board is placed when it is desired to use the same for ironing. B represents the skirt-board, made tapering in form, in the usual manner. This board when not in use is placed in recesses or sockets a in the rear side of the receptacle, upon its edge, longitudinally with the said rear side of the receptacle, thus occupying a very small space, and being entirely out of the way. When it is desired to use this skirt-board, it is only necessary to remove it from the recesses or sockets a and place it in the gains b, with its upper surface extending above the end pieces of the bureau, so as to present no obstruction to the flat-iron, whereas, if it was hinged, (as is sometimes done,) the face of the flat-iron is liable to come in contact with the metal hinges, to the injury of the face of said iron, and with danger of injuring the fabric being operated upon. The skirt is placed upon the board in the usual manner, the portion not under operation falling down into the receptacle A, thus preventing it from coming in contact with the floor or the clothing of the person ironing, and consequently prevents the garment under operation from becoming soiled or rumpled. 0 represents the top or lid, which is hinged to the stationary portion of the bureau, shown at c, Fig. 2.
