Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
iS. S. HARTSI-IORN, OF ORANGE, CONNECTICUT.
BUCKLE.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 13,907, dated December 11, 1855.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, SHELDON S. HARTS- HORN, of the town of Orange, in the co-unty of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is aI full, clear, and exact description of the construction, character and operati-on of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view of the buckle complete. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the main fra-me, or bow, of the buckle. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of that part which composes the tongues, and loop.
My improvement consists in making the buckle in two parts in such a manner that the part, which composes the tongues, and the loop to which the standing part of the st-rap is to be attached, shall have the socket so formed that it will secure the joint of the wire of the main frame, or bow, so that it will need no other fastening to hold=- it` firmly together, and give it all the necessary strength.
I make the main frame, or bow, of a piece of wire swaged into the shape shown in Fig. 2, or any analogous form, (precisely the same as described in my patent which was issued November 7th 1854). I make the other part, (which composee the tongues, and the loop to which the standing part of t-he strap is to be attached,) of sheetI metal, and raise it with dies, or swages, to the form, substantially, as shown in Fig. 3. I then put the two parts together, and by means of dies, or swages, set do-wn the socket, a, around that part of the bow which is left open, (as at 5,) in such a manner as to form a socket, in whole, or in part, to serve the ends of the wire, and, also, to hold the parts of the buckle together, so that the whole will appear, substantially, as represented in Fig. 1, when the buckle will be complete, and ready for use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Constructing the tongues and loop, of the buckle in one part, and at one operation, in such a manner that the socket, (a, Fig. 3,) will firmly secure the oint, (b) in the other part, (Fig. 2,) so as to need no other fastening, as herein described.
