To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN MCDONALD HA'ITERSLEY, a subject of the Kin of Great Britain, residing at Association Fuildings, Dale End, Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented certain new and useful Improved Memoranda or lVriting Appliances for Use in Connection with Telephones; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

The present invention comprises, a new or improved memoranda or writing appliance for use in connection withtelephones and it has for its object to provide an improved and more eifective appliance for this purpose.

According to this invention the appliance is adapted to be secured to the base of a table telephone in such a manner that it is movable therewith, and it comprises a Writingbaseor surface and a paper supply device.

According to one construction the base portion of the appliance is made from two disks of metal separated one from the other in such manner as to form a channel to allow a strip of paper to pass between them, or to allow a sliding writing base to be inserted therein. The writing base may be hinged or otherwise connected to the base portion in such manner that it may be brought into a suitable position when required for writing, while when not required for use it may be folded upwardly out of the way with its free end abutting against the telephone, or may be pushed out of the way in the channel between the disks. The base portion is also provided with an extension adapted to support a roll of paper. The paper from the roll is adapted to pass through the channel in the base portion and on to the writing base, and it may be retained in position thereon by means of guides formed by turning over the edges of the writing base.

According to another construction the base portion of the appliance is dispensed with,and the writing base is provided with means whereby it may be attached to the pillar of the telephone above the base of the telephone. In this construction the writing base is attached to, or forms part of, a truncated cone, pyramid, or the like, fitting around the telephone and above the tele; phone base.

A roll of paper may be provided as in the constructions hereinbefore mentioned, or if desired, a pad of paper may be provided on the writing base. 7

The invention further comprises certain features of construction which will appear from the following description with reference to the drawings, and will be pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of one example of appliance.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive of the drawings the base portion of the appliance preferably comprises two substantially circular plates 1 and 2 separated by distance pieces 3. These parts are suitably secured together as by brazing, soldering, rivets, or screws, in such a manner as to form a channel between, and transversely of, the two disks 1 and 2. The base portion thus formed is adapted to be clamped to the base of an ordinary table telephone by means of wire clips 4. These clips are U shaped in plan and their two arms engage in holes formed in the edge of the upper plate 2 and also in holes formed in lugs 5 soldered, brazed or otherwise secured, to the lower plate 1 of the base so as to hold the two These clips are preferably so bent as to take a spring grip on the base of the telephone. The two arms of each clip may diverge so as to take a spring gri in the lugs 5, or may be secured therein i desired. Preferably two of these clips 4 are arranged at diametrically opposite points of the base, and one is preferably arranged to be diametrically adjustable so as to fit telephones having different sized bases. For this purpose the clip on one side may be firmly soldered or secured in the lugs 5, while the clip on the opposite side has extended arms which are slidable in the lugs 5.

The rear portion of one of disks 1, 2, but preferably of the upper disk 2, is formed disks l i and the underside of with an extension which is suitably bent to form a bracket 6 for the support of the paper carrying drum 7. The paper carrying drum 7 may be formed as shown by a prolongation of the bracket 6 suitably bent to cylindrical shape, or it may be formed separately and hinged to the support 6. The paper roll is preferably rotatably mounted in the drum 7. The paper roll may be Supported within the drum 7 upon a central spindle 8 securely attached'to the middle of one of the end plates of the drum. The

opposite end plate of the drum may be removable so that the paper roll can be inserted and this end plate may be secured in position by a nut screwing on to the end of the spindle 8. In front of the appliance the lower disk 1 is formed with an extension or extensions 11 adapted to be curved over in such manner'a's to embrace a hinge pin 9. The hinge pin 9 is also adapted to be embraced by bent projections formed on the Writing base 10. The writing base 10 is preferably of metal and has its edges turned over to form guides 12 for the edges of the paper strip.

The paper strip is adapted to pass from the drum 7 through the channel between the land 2 and over the surface of the writing base 10 with its edges guided by the guides 12. When not-required for use the writing base 10 may be turned upward into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the writing base may conveniently be provided with advertising matter. If this advertising matter is embossed on the writing base a false base may be inserted to provide a smooth surface for the paper to restupon.

ccording to the modification'illustrated by Fig. 5 the writing base 10 is adapted to be pushed into the channel between the two disks 1 and 2 when not required for use. For this purpose the projection or projections 11 on the lower disk 1 may be conveniently bent only'partially around the hinge pin 9 so that when the writing base 10 is pushed inwardly the hinge pin 9 disengages from the projections 11 and the writing base is free to be pushed into the channel. In order that the writing base 10 may be pulled out again when required it may conveniently be provided at its outer end with a curved tongue 13 by which it may be grasped with the fingers.

In the alternative construction of base as illustrated in Fig. 8, one disk only is employed, the base comprising a fiat central lower part 12 having upwardly bent ends 13, lateral extensions of which are turned inwardly to provide upper parts 14 parallel to the base, the extreme ends being bent downwardly as at 15. The parts 15 act as the distance pieces and they form the transverse channel for the paper.

Any of the appliances hereinbefore described may be made from sheet metal suitably stamped, and bent to shape, and any of the parts not used as the writing base may have advertising matter applied thereto in any desired manner.

Vhat I claim then is 1. Memorandum appliance for table telephones, comprising a base, means on said base for detachably securing it beneath the base of a table telephone, a channel formed by upper and lower parts of said base and by distance pieces between them, a Hat support for paper carried by said base and located adjacent one end of said channel, a paper supply device located on the other side of the telephone to the said support and adjacent the other end of the channel, whereby the paper from the supply device can pass through said channel to the fiat support.

2. Memorandum appliance for table telephones comprising a base, a fixed clip on one side of the base and an adjustable clip on base for detachably securing it beneath the base or" a table telephone, a channel formed by the casing of said base, a flat support for paper carried by said base and located adjacent one end of said channel, and a paper supply device located on the other side of the telephone to the said support and adjacent the other end of the channel, whereby the 13 per from the supply device can pass through said channel. to the flat support.

3. Memorandum appliance for table telephones comprising a base, means on said base for detachably securing it beneath the base of a table telephone, a channel formed be tween upper and lower parts of said base, and by distance pieces between them, a flat support for paper carried by said base and located adjacent one endoit said channel, a paper supply device located on the opposite side of the telephone to said support and adj acent the other end of the channel, whereby the paper from the supply device can pass through said passage to the flat support.

4. Memorandum appliance for table telephones comprising a base, a fixed clip and an adjustable clip on said base for detachably securing it beneath the base of a table telephone, a channel formed between upper and lower parts of said base, and by distance pieces between them, a fiat support for paper carried by said base, and located adjacent one end of said channel, a paper supply device located on the opposite side of the telephone to said support other end of the channel, whereby the paper from the supply device can pass through said channel to the fiat support.

5. Memorandum applianc for table telephones comprising a base, including two disks of sheet material secured together in spaced relation with distance pieces between and adjacent the them, means on said base for detachably securing it beneath the base of a table telephone, and a flat support for paper carried by said base.

6. Memorandum appliance for table telephones comprising a base, including two disks of sheet material secured together in spaced relation with distance pieces between them, means on said base for detachably securing it beneath the base of a table telehone, a channel formed between upper and ower parts of said base and by distance pieces between them, a flat support for paper carried b said base and located adjacent one of said channels, a paper supply (kvice located on the opposite side of the telephone to said support and adjacent the other end of the channel, whereby the paper from the supply device can pass through said channel to the flat support.

Memorandum appliance for table telephones comprising a base, including two disks of sheet material secured together in spaced relation with distance pieces between them, a fixed clip and an adjustable clip on said base for detachably securing it beneath the base of a table telephone, a channel formed between upper and lower parts of said base and by distance pieces between them, a flat support for paper carried by said base and located adjacent one end of said channel, said support having guides at opposite edges, a paper supply device located on the opposite side of the telephone to said support and adjacent the other end of the channel, whereby the paper from the supply de vice can pass through said channel to the fiat support.
