Description

UNITED STATESPATENT orrice.
Boscii MAGNETO coRronAvTioN, or SPRINGFIELD, MAssAciiUsnTTsA CORPO f RATION or NEW YORK. y f
LUBRICATOR.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLrH RosNnii, a citizen of the United States,`residing at `4l.- Ventura street, Springfield, in the county of Hampden, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iii Lubricators 5 and I do'hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.v t
T lie present invention relates to oilers for oscillating devices, such as oscillating inagnetos, and particularly to one adapted to be carried by the oscillatory mechanism there Y of. f a
' In accordance with one part of my iiiven tion, thevoiler is carried by the trip lever of the oscillating mechanism, so that vduring operation, oil is caused by the snap action of the trip lever to be actively fed onto the parts to be lubricated, and during rest the oil feed is reduced to a minimum. yPreferably tlie oiler has means, such as laterally extending portions, engaging the trip lever for more rigidly holding it in fixed'relation, the lever having, if desired, a squared portion for engagement with such means.
IVhetlier or not the oiler has means for more rigidly holding it in lined relation to the trip lever, but preferably so, the oiler is, in accordance with another part of my invention secured to the lever by the saine means used for securing the lever to the sli-aft of the oscillatory mechanism thereby simplifying the installation and making it possible to install the oiler on present os cillating mechanism without machining or using special tools or parts. t
In the preferred embodiment of the invention described liereinaftei,'tlie oiler comprises a container having a supporting poi'- tion by which the oiler may be rigidly secured to the trip lever by ay securing means, the trip lever engaging the means, provided on the supporting portion, having'means bearing against and supporting the bottoni of the container, thus adding rigidity to the oiler. y f
It is another part of my invention to construct the oiler with a containerhaving a permanently open top and with oil retaining means, and providingthe container with rmeans, preferably in the form' of upwardly converging end walls, for retaining theV oil retaining means in place so that it `will'fnot be Specication'ofLetters Patent. Patented Sept. 13,1921.l i Application filed March 24, 1921.I Serial No. 455,144. I
upwardly'converging end walls, alsohas oil y dripping means,V preferably in the form, of depending pro]ections, for receiving oil from the oil retaining means and valong which the" l oil may How and from which'drops of oil may be shaken, during the ,oscillation of,
the trip lever and oiler, thedrops ofoil being cast against the parts to be lubricated. The oil is preferably .conducted fromf-"the oil ietaiiiingmeans to the eXteriorof, the containeigvas to the oil dripping meansy or depending projections, through open-ings,
preferably in the form of slots,"fprofvided in *theV bottom of the oil container adjacent such projections. 1
As another feature of my invention, I con# struct or compose my oiler from a" single sheet metal blank having "portions which when bent and folded, form the bottom, side and end walls of the container. togetherwith a` supporting portion by which the oiler is ,e i Y secured tothe trip lever, the supporting portions having portions which when ylaterally bent form ythe portions for engaging. the trip lever for maintaining ltheffixed rela- Vtion between the trip lever and oiler, s o as to generally reinforce and give rigidity to thel oiler, dripping portions vbeing also formed integrally with the endwall y.portions.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of' the invention as applied to an oscillatingmagneto: Figure, 1 is an end view of an oscillating magneto with an oiler in operative position;
Fig. Qis a fragmentary sectional view taken., on line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a'yfragmentary s fectional'view taken on .line -lzof Fig. l; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal 'section of the oiler taken on line 4-#4 of Fig.v 3; Fig.
5 is a fragmentary sectional viewA taken on Y line -ro'f Fig. l; Fig. Gis a perspective view of the oiler; and Fig. 7 Vis a plan view of the sheet metal blank in developed form from which the oiler is constructed.
leferringmore particularly tothe 1 ing the magneto 1 has an end plate 2 carrying laterally extending arms 3 at the ends of which are pivotally mounted rollers 4 carrying an end of oscillating springs 5, the other end of the springs being connected to rollers (5 pivotally mounted upon pins 7 rigidlysecured to a yoke portion 8 ofl trip lever 9. VThe trip lever has a taperedsoclet 10 fitting with the tapered end 11 of the magneto shaft 12, and is maintained in fixedA rel'- ative position to the shaft 12 by means of a` nut 13 threaded upon the screw threaded end 14 of the shaft, a'suitable spring` lock' washer 15 being conveniently interposed between the nut and the trip lever. The trip lever extends downwardly a sufficient distance to be engaged by a roller 16 mounted upon a pin 17 carried as a fixed partof a moving member of an engine, such as the flywheel of the engine.l The lower portion 18 of the trip lever has a machined surface V19 against'and along which the roller 16 contacts Vand moves when the trip lever is shifted from the position shown in full lines to that. shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the roller 16 disengaging the end of the portion 18 in the dotted line position shown.
TheV oiler is constructed from a single sheet metal blank which may be cut or formed 'into' shape, as by die-pressing or similar modes of manufacture, so as to provide in the sheet side portions 21 and 22, a bottom portion 23, supporting portions 2e and 25, end portions 26 and 27, drip portions 28 and 29, formed integral' with the end wall portions, and reinforcingportions 30, 31, 32 and 33, the reinforcing portions, when laterally bent and curved, and adapted to engage with the trip lever as well as with the bottom portion of the oiler, in a manner hereinafter more fullyv described.
In constructing the oiler the blank may be bent or folded along the dotted lines shown so as -to bringy the supporting' portions 24 and'25 adjacent each other and the side wall portions 21 and 22 inrspaced parallel relation withV the bottom portion 23 extending from the supporting' portion 25 to the side wall portion 22 as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. The end portions are also bent or folded so as to provide depending drip portions 28 and 29 at the ends of the oiler andI are maintained in proper relation by bending or, folding over the flange pori tions 34v and 35 at vthe rear of the side' wall forcing' portions 30 and 31, as ywell as por- V tions 32 and 33` are bent laterally from the supporting` portion 24: with the portions 32 and 33 suitably curved, and, if necessary, spun into shape', so that theV upper ends of the reinforcingportions 32 and 33 will bear upwardly and against the bottom wall 23 so asv tog-ive rigidityto the oiler as a whole, as will appear `more fully hereinafter.
The supporting' -portions .2f-l and .25 are pro-[\70 comprising the member 24 andV 25 by which the oiler may be secured'in position upon the trip lever. The depending supportingl portion isprefe 'ably located between the end ofthe tapered portionll of the shaft 12 and the washer 15, the nut 13 constituting' common means forsecuring` the oiler in place upon the shaft 12 as vwell as for securing' the trip lever upon the rshaft 12. The trip lever' is. conveniently provided with a squared portion 37 against the lateral faces of which contact or engage the laterally extending' reinforcing` portions 30 and 31, which engagement prevents relative angular movement betweenthe supporting;` por# tion of the oiler and the trip lever, thereby maintainingl the oiler and trip lever 'fixed with the container elevated position above the trip lever so that the depending' drip pingportions will be located above the ro lers G and pins 7 for a purpose more fully hereinafter disclosed. The reinforcing portions 32 and 33 are upwardly curvedl as well as extending' laterally from the supportingportion of the oiler with the upper end of the curved portionsbearing` against and supporting' the bottom 23 of the container so as to give rigidity to the container and to prevent the same from sagging during` its operation.
lV'thin the c i` ntainer is placed ar'suitable oil retaining' means 33 of absorbent material such as felt or wick-like ysubstance adapted to retain, by capillary attractiona suitable uantity of oil but to also permit aslow ow of the oil therefrom as the oiler is oscilf lated. or given a snap actio'n'by the oscillation of the trip lever. rllhe. oilrretaini'ng `means will also act as a filtering means there- .by removing foreign substances from the oil before the oil 1s conveyed to the parts to be lubricated.Y rllhe bottom portion 23 of the container is preferably formed with the ends thereof slightly spaced from the inner faces of the end wall portions or depending' drip portions'23 and 29, thefs'p'aces thus formed 'l between the'ends of the bottom and the drip portions forming openings 39 in the shape of slots through which oil may be vconducted from the oil retainingrmeans in the conmechanism to be lubricated. The oil retainl ing means is pressedpinto -position and slightly compressed at the ends by the upwardly converging end wall portions 26 and 27, the inclination-of the latter being of utility to prevent the workingof the oil retaining means out of the container and from being loosened or thrown from the container during action of the tripping mechanism.
` t will be observed that the container is located above the yoke 8 and the trip lever in such position that the lowermost point of the dripping portions 28 and 29 will lie substantially in the vertical plane passing between the inner surface of the4 rollers 6 and the adjacent surface of the yoke 8 so that the oil will fall or drop onto these members and will work its way between these surfaces as well as upon the bearing surface of the pins 7 and rollers 6 to lubricate the same. Oil willcontinue to flow along the trip lever to the lower end thereof and along the surface 19 lubricating the same for contact with the roller 16 carried by the engine flywheel. In this way lubrication of-several points by a single unitary device is continuouslyobtained during the operation of the oscillating mechanism.
It will also be observed that the oil container has a permanently opened top and is elongated so that the oil may be poured into the container upon the oil retaining means at any time, especially when the oscillating mechanism is in operation. The oil will seep through the oil retaining means and gradually flow through the openings or slots 39 onto thev drip projections from which the drops of oil may be snapped or thrown upon the parts to be lubricated during the oscillation of the trip lever and the oiler.
In operation the roller 16, carried by a moving part of the engine, such as a flywheel, contacts with the surface 19 of-'the trip lever, causing said lever to be shifted from the position shown in full lines to that shown in dotted lines, in Fig. 1 of the drawing, during which time the Shaft 12, carrying the oscillating armature of the magneto, is given a certain angularly movement,'and the springs 15 are tensioned by reason of ythe rollers 6 and pins 7 being angularly moved about the axis of the shaft 12 to a point where the roller 16 disengages with the end of the trip lever, whereupon the springs', due to their contractile effect, suddenly oscillate the trip lever in reversed direction, the oiler being also oscillated simultaneously, since it isrigidly secured in fixed relation to thetrip lever. This snap action, due to the oscillation of the trip lever 'I and oiler, will aid the oil'to flow from the container onto the drip' projections and will also cause the drops of oil adhering tothe drip projections to be cast therefromiand upon'the parts to be lubricated, such as .the
surfaces'between the rollers 16, yoke 8 and pins 7, the oil eventually flowing down along the trip lever to the surfacei19, thus lubricating said surface for contact therewith of the roller 16. Vhen the operation of the de vice ceases Ythere is no tendency for the oil to be thrown from .the container and the oil retaining means will retain the oil, by capillarity, with a minimum loss. Having thus described my invention what I claim is: .i
