To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN J. LANGMAGK, a citizen of the United States residing in the city of Portland, county of Multnomah, and State of Oregon, have invented certarn new and useful Improvements in Automatic Oil- Pumps with Sigh -Feed, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to an automatic oil pump adapted to feed oil, under force, to cylinders, bearings and other mechanical parts requiring constant lubrication, and it has among its salient objects to provlde in a device of the character referred to a reservoir with a removable cover, and a pumping mechanism capable of being bodily lifted from said reservoir without the necessity of taking the same apart, for such cleaning, adjustment or repairs, as may from time to time be necessary; to provide in a device of the character referred to an operating mechanism which can be quickly adjusted for use with right or left hand connections; to provide. in a device of the character referred to a sight feed of such construction that any clogging of the oil passageways will be promptly indicated thereby, there being no escape for the oil around the sight feed mechanism which will prevent its filling the sight feed tube and thus indicating promptly that there is an obstruction somewhere in the mechanism.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description of the preferred embodiment .of my invention, taken with the accompanying two sheets of drawings on which the same is illustrated,

Referring now in detail to the drawings, my invention, as here illustrated, comprises a box, or casing, 1, constituting a reservoir for the lubricating material, and provided wlth means, as at 1", for securing it in a suitable position for operation. Said box,
or casing, 1, is provided with a removable,
cover 2, having a trap door 3, covering a screen 4, through which lubricating matter is supplied to said reservoir. Said cover is also provided with a glass 5, securely mounted in a metal frame 6, with sight openings therethrough, as indicated. Thus said cover can be removed bodily without difl'iculty.
Said box, or casing, is provided in the upper edges of its opposite end walls with openings, as at 1 1 into which detachably fits filler bearing members 7-7. Mounted within said box, or casing, is a plunger casting, or body, 8, of substantially shown in Fig. 3, having a longitudinal oil passageway 8, extending therethrough' at one side of the center,

A short glass sight tube 14, is set around the crooked feed spout 13, upon the upper end of the plunger casting 8, and is secured in place by a cage-like'member 15, screwed onto the upper end of the casting 8,- as
clearly indicated in Fig. 3. This construc-.
tion permits the removal of the cover 2, to-
gether with the outer sight glass 5, and its frame 6, without the disturbance of the inner sight glass 14 and its holding cage 15. It will also be noted that for any reason the oil passageway 8, which is flared at its upper end at 8, is filled with oil, the oil will fill the inner sight tube 14, and thus disclose the fact that there is an obstruction in the oil circulating system.
A plunger 17, is mounted to reciprocate 1n the plunger chamber 8 and is attached at one end to an operating yoke 18, the lower side of which yoke has a sliding engagement, as at 19, with an extension 20, formed as a part of the plunger casting 8. The opposite side of said yoke 18 has connected therewith a pin 21, on which is mounted a sleeve 22, provided at its outer end with a thumb nut 23, by means of which said sleeve can be turned. Said sleeve has a slot and pin connection, as at 24, with the pin 21. A coiled spring 25, is mounted around the pin 21, within the sleeve 22, as indicated. Also mounted on the pin 21, and having a toothed, interlocking engagement with the end of said sleeve 22, as at 26, is a sleeve extension 27, having threaded engagement with the pin 21, and provided with a downwardly depending portion 28, having-a slot 29, therein, receive an operating pin 30, mounted upon the upper end of a rocker lever 31, pivotally' connected in its middle, as at 32, to the extension 20. The lower end of said rocker lever 31. is connected by means of a link 33, to the outer end of the plunger 10.
Detachably mounted through the casing, or housing, 1, in detachable bearing members 34 and 35, is a shaft 36, on which is mounted an eccentric disk 37, within the yoke 18,
and by means of which said yoke 18, with its plunger 17 and its other connected parts 21, 22 and 27, are reciprocated. Secured on said shaft 36, is a ratchet wheel 38. Se-
cured to the outer end of said shaft 36, is a crank disk 39, provided with a handle 40. Loosely mounted on said shaft is an operating wheel 41, provided around its periphery -lar 46, and a screw 47.

Thus said shaft 36, and its eccentric cam can be directly operated by hand by means of the disk 39 and handle 40, or said hand wheel 41, can be oscillated through the connection made to the pitman 44, with a moving part of the engine, whereby said ratchet wheel 38, is stepped forwardly, notch by notch, operating the shaft 36, and the eccentric 37, by means of which the yoke 18, is operated with its plunger 17, and through the connection of the rocker arm 31, the plunger 10, is also operated, said plungers 10 and 17, being alternately moved forwardly. As the plunger 10- moves outwardly, it draws oil through the inlet at 8 at the lower end of the oil passageway 8, and as said plunger is forced inwardly said oil is forced upwardly through said passageway 8 through the feed spout 13, from which it drips into the passageway 8, and into the plunger chamber 8. As the plunger 17 moves inwardly, it forces the oil, thus fed into the plunger chamber 8 out through the extension 11, past the check valves 11 and 11, from which said oil is carried by straight pipe connections to the cylinders, boxes and bearings to be lubricated.
By means of the sleeve 22, on the pin 21,
vwhich pin is revolublyv connected to the yoke against the tension of the spring 25, and by turning said thumb nut and said sleeve, the pin 21, being turned in one direction or the other, as may be desired, whereupon the sleeve extension 27, is moved in one direction or the other, on said pin, by reason of its threaded connection therewith.
Mounted in one corner of the box or casing, 1, is a glass sight tube 53, open at both ends for indicating the height of the oil supply in the box, or casing, 1.
In attaching the distributing pipes for feeding the oil directly to the cylinders, boxes, or other hearings, to be lubricated, I prefer to use a check-valve mechanism, similar to that shown in Fig. 7 and similar to the check-valve mechanism controlling the oil discharge from the plunger chamber 8, by the plunger 17. For example, P indicates a steam pipe, extension 11, for feeding oil to the steam pipe P, said check-valve mechanism comprising a casing 55, with the irregular oil passageway 56, therethrough, with the spring-pressed ball valves 56 -56 interposed in the tapered vertical portions of the oil passageway 56, through said member 55, for preventing the back flow of the oil, in a manner which will be well understood from the drawings.
Attention is hereby called to the fact that by reason of my improvements, the cover 2 can be bodily removed from the box,.or casing, 1, leaving the entire mechanism exposed, and without disturbing the sight feed.
Attention is also called to the fact that by reason of the removable bearings 34 and 35, which are seated in the upper outer edges of said box, or casing, the shaft 36 and the parts mounted thereon can be bodily lifted w out of the machine and out of the yoke 18,
and reversed, or changed end for end, whereby to put the driving connections at the opposite end of the casing.
Attention. is also called to the fact that the entire mechanism can be bodily lifted out of the box, or casing, by reason of the fact that the bearing members 7--7, in the opposite ends of the box, or casing, are detachably seated in the upper edges thereof.
Thus I have provided an improved mechanism in which all of the working parts are wholly inclosed within the reservoir away from the dust and dirt, and in which the parts can be quickly and conveniently lifted out for the purpose of cleaning, repairlng, or reversing, without the removal of bolts, screws, and the like.
While I have shown the preferred and latest developments in my improved oil pump, I do not'limit it to the details here shown, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.

In an oil pump of the character referred to, a body member. having an upflow oil passageway extending longitudinally therethrough and terminating at its upper end in a drip spout mounted on tlie upper end of said body member, said body member also having, a downfiow oil passageway therethrough, from the upper end thereof adjacent said drip spout with a flaring upper end toreceive the oil from said drip spout, means for forcing oil upwardly through said upflow passageway, a sight tube seated upon the upper end of said body member around said upfiow and downfiow openings and said drip spout, and a cage for holding said sight glass firmly down on to the upper end of said body member, whereby any obstruction inthe downfiow oil passageway will fill said sight glass, substantially as described' Signed at Portland, Multnomah county, Oregon, this 9th'da of June, 1917. a JO N J.
