Speccation ofLetters Patent.
patented. oet'. s; 1916;.
ApplicationledrNovember 12, 1915. Serial No. 61,175.
To all whom t may concern: j
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Spion- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and Statev ofV Illinois, have invented certain new and use.- ful Improvements in Engine Cylinder- Oilers, of, which thev following is a. specification.
positive means for at all times supplying the eylinderor cylinders with a given-amount of oil for eachl revolution ofthe engine.A
Another objecty of my invention is. to provide means forV varyingat will.- the amount of oil to be fed to. each cylinder or cylinders.,
Another object; of my invention is'to c0nstruct an oiler that will supply a definite amount, of oilirrespective of whether the oil is heavy or light.
llith these and incidental objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, the essential elements of which are set forth in appended claims and a preferred form of embodiment of which is hereinafter described with reference to the drawing which accompanies and forms a part of this specification. v
In Vthe drawing, Figure 1, shows aside elevation of the oiler with the essential interior parts dotted in, and Fig. 2 discloses am cross section on the line AA looking in the direction of the arrows. The tank 1, Fig. 1, is adapted to be fastened to the frame of the engine in any suitable manner, so the pinion 2 may be driven by the engine to operate the oiler mechanism. Driven by the pinion 2 the reducing gear 3 is adapted to drive the oiler gear 4 in an anticl0ckwise direction, the gear 4 being journaled at 5 in the oiler case 6 so that when the tank and case are bolted together by the bolts 7 and the tank is supplied with oil the gear 4 will carry the droppers 8 swinging loosely on the dropper studs 9 down into the oil in the tank 1, and each dropper will carry upwardly with it a certain amount of oil, which in a continued rotation of the gear 4 w-ill'bel wiped olf bythe, wipersA 10, the oil. from the droppers passing down Ythe wipers. into the holes` 11, Fig.A 2, from where it is lead by pipes to. the engmecylinders. inl any;l suitable manner.,
As shown in Fig. 2 the gear 4 carries` a setA` ofy droppers oneither side and' each of Athe dropper studs 9,y (-iarriesv two droppers,
thus proyiding for. the lubrication of the four cylinders.
The ad-'usters 13, preferably y made of Y Iwi-re, and.- one being provided' for each side ofA the` oiler` gear- 4, serve. to determine the amount of @il that will be. fed to, the engine cylinders. Adjnstment. holes 14, Fig.. 1, are provided, into which the ends 15, Fig; 2, of the a-djnsters 13` may be.- sprung and the po.- sition of the adjusters in these holes will determi-ne. the position of the crank end 12 of the adjuster inside of4 the-oiler case.
The, droppers 8 are, preferablyin setsl of three different lengths for each cylinder, and thev adjuster crank 12 on the inside, of the cassis adaptedto. be so-positioned when placed in the lowest adjustment hole that allA of the droppers willpass. over itduring.
the rotation of the gear 4 without'touching it, and thus deposit all of the oil picked upV by them on their respective wipers. When the adj uster 13 is placed in the second hole thelongest set of droppers will wipe on the crank. 12 of the adjuster in passing,`and most of the oil will be wiped therefrom, and hence the wipers will receive less oil when the droppers wipe against them. Similarly with the adjuster 13 in the third hole the longest'and second longest sets of droppers will wipe on the adjuster crank 12, removing most of the oil, and the remaining short set of droppers will deposit all of its oil on the proper wipers. While if the adjuster is placed in the fourth position, all of the droppers will wipe over the adjuster crank end 12, removing most of the oil from each 1 of the droppers, and only a small quantity will remain to be deposited on the wipers 10. If the adjuster is placed in the fifth, or last, position Vall of the droppers will be wiped their entire length and practically all oil removed, so that only a minor quantity will be wiped off by the wipers. It is evident that no matter whether the oil be light or heavy, the droppers will carry with-them a drop of oil and lubricant will thus be fed to the engine cylinders under all operating conditions.
While I have thus described my invention with one particular type of oiler 'and a certain arrangement of parts, I do not wish it understood that I limit myself ltothis construction, as it is evident that my invention may be embodied inv many dierent ways within the scope of the followingclaims.
Claims: A
1. In an engine cylinder oiler, the combination of an oil reservoir, a rotating member adapted to rotate partly within land partly without said oilrreservoir, a stud on said rotating member carrying a dropper, and means adapted to Wipe said dropper as it passes by said means.
2. In an engine cylinder oiler, the combination of a reservoir adapted to contain oil, a rotatable member carrying thereon a dropper adapted to be carried Yinto and out of the oil in said tank, means for removing the oil from said dropper after it has been carried from said tank, and adjustable means for wiping oil from said dropper before said dropper reaches said wiping means 1n f lits rotation.
3. In an enginecylinder oiler, the Ycombination o f a. tank adapted to contain oil, roV- tatable means adapted to carry a series of droppers of different length, a wiper associated with said rotatable means and adapt-V ed to wipe all of said droppers as they are carried pastduring the rotation'of said rotatable means, and an adguster adapted to be set in different positions, so said adjuster will' wipe a greater amount of said drop pers in one position than in another position.
4:. In an engine cylinder oiler, the combination of a tank adapted to contain oil, rotatable means carrying droppers thereon adapted to always hang vertically therefrom and to have a portion of said droppers carried into and out of the oil contained in said tank by the rotation of said rotatable means, a wiper adapted to wipe all of said droppers, and adjustable means Vwhereby the amount of oil received by said wiper may be varied.
5. In an engine cylinder oiler, the combination of a tank adapted to contain oil, a rotatable member adapted to be driven by the engige towhich the oiler is applied, droppers of unequal length suspended vertically 0nsaid rotatable member and adapted to be carried into and out of the oil in said tank by the rotation of said rotatable member, a wiper positioned so as to be wiped by said droppers duringV the rotation of said rotatable members and to receive oil from said droppers during said wiping, means forv leading the oil so collected from said wiper,
and an adjuster so positioned that it may be set to wipe all of the droppers longer than any predetermined length before said vdroppers are carried to said wi}; er.V
