UNITED STATES PATENT f OFFICE.
MARK E. STOVER,
oF sAGiNAW,f1sneHIGAN, AssIeNoR for ONE-HALF 'ro- JOHNWM. HALL. oF SAME PLACE.
LUBmcATo R.-
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 110.574,688, dated annary 5, 1897.-"
' Application tiled september19.1396. serian. 606,372.` of@ man. Y"
.To all whom it may concern.:
l Be it known that I-,` MARK E. STOVER, a citizen o f the United States. of America., residingat Saginaw, East Side, i'n't-he county ofSagi- -Cupsg naw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Dope.- and I do hereby declare the following ,y lto be a full, clear, and exact descrptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled -in the art -to which it appertainsjto make and use thes'ame, reference being had to the ac- .companyiug drawings, and to letters of referencemarked thereon, which forma partof this speciiication.. Y v
The object offany invention is to provide adope-cup inV which -thfe .meehanism that produces the force feed of lthe dope or grease will be positive in its action and may continue after the cup is empty without affecting the operation of lthe parts, the construction also contemplati'ng the removal'of the cover in refill- 'ing the .cup without disturbing the actuating mechanism, said 7 cover merely carrying the piston and threaded piston-rod in'contradistinction to other devices of 'a similar character in which' the operating mechanism is mounted on the cover and requires to be removedv therewith after being disconnected from the driven shaft.
.With the above ends inview my invention consists in the particular construction and combination of the parts, including certain details of construction, all .ofwhich willbe I hereinafter described, and specifically re- -ferred to -in the claims forming a part of this specification.
By practical test it has-been found that the ordinary ratehet-and-pa'wl mechanism' forsecuring a force feed in dope-cups iails to perform a positive or l'regular action by reason of the rapid movementofthe parts often causing the ,pawl toslip over the teeth of the ratchet-wheel quiteL as often" as it catches. By the particular construction and arrangementof lthe parts of myinventionl` provide a reducing-gear for rotating the threaded pis-v ton-rod of the dope-cup that is positive and regular in its operation, themeehamsm. be-
ing simple and compactand not liable to gein out of order.
VIn the accompanying drawings, forming part of this'- specification, Figure 1 is'a'front anism therefor constructed in-accordance the cup to the parts to be lubricated. The upper part of the sha-nk A', adjoining the bot annular bearing-surface a' and a collar f12 above the same.
Inclosing the cup A, but out of Contact ecives the shank A' and engages the bearingsurfaee a', being held in such engagement by frame or castin-g'which .supports a part of the gear mechanism and is secured to the in termediate portion of the shank A'.
The Icasing'l is provided-at. its lower en with a circumferential ange b, having internal gear-'teeth which mesh with the gear mechanism, hereinafter described, to revolve the upper open ends of the-cup Aand casing flange of which is provided at opposingsides with inwardly-projecting lugs c, that `engage the said cover in place,th e slotsbeing properly arranged with respect to the direction of ro- .gagement of theparts at all times. To' the @enterjof the' cover' C is rigidlyecured a elevation of *a dope-eupand operating mechwith my invention. Fig. 2 isa side elevation.
a modification showing they manner of driv? man-head. S or. other support, the said s hankhaving anertrcal openin g a, which leads fromv A therewith, is a casingB, the bottom of which is provided with an axial opening which re-` said casing about the stationary cup A. Over B is placed a cover or cap C, the depending angular slots b in the rim'ofl the'casing to hold" .tation of the casing to insure the proper-em.
pistonfrod E, which depends into the :cup A;
By-'re'ference to the drawings, A designates tom of the cup A, is enlarged to provide an IOO and is threaded nearly its whole length, a re duced portion e being provided at its lower end, beyond which is a head or stop e'. The
. pistoni-rod can be secured to'the coveriu any suitable manner, but, as shown, the said cover has an ornamental knob with a central'bore in which the'upper end of the piston-rod ts and is held by a transverse piu e3. Upon'this piston-rod is mounted a disk or piston F, having an axial threaded opening through which the rod passes, said disk or piston fitting snugly within thecup A to frictionally engage the inner side thereof andprevent rota'- tion, depending wingsf being-also provided i for this purpose by entering the thick grease. G designates the frame or casting, which is provided with an enlarged portion' having a vertical opening to`receive thel shank A', to
which it is secured by a set-screw g.
member` provided with a longitudinalbore in which is placed a shaft H, having a worm h fformed on its inner end,'said Worm meshing Witlra'ge'ar-wheel 1, carrying a pinionI I', the latter being in mesh-with the internal teeth lof the casingB. Theg'ear-wheel lis let into an enlarged portion of the frame or casting. G, and thevertical shaft fi, upon which the .gear-wheel andpinion are mounted, has a ,bearingA at its lower end in said frame and at 4its upper end bears -in a plate or arm K, mountedV u'ponthe shank A' and interposed between the enlarged portion of thefraine G and collar that .forms the bearing-surface a" hereinbefore referred, to'.- A straight edge is formed at. the .rearend of the arm K toen; .gage a .lug or projection g', which-holds'said arm'in its proper relative position.v To the outer endof the shaft H is'keyed a diskL, inclosed within a t\vo .part casiug'M, Vsaid casing having a .ball-bearing upon the shaft and provided with an inwardly-project ing ange m', fitting within anannular recess in the'outer'end ofthe Ahorizontal portion of 4 the' frame G, 'Fig` 3. This casingis enlarged to V'oneside of the disk L, and this' enlarged portion is provided with a series of recesses m', each containing aroller N, adapted-to engage the' periphery of the said diskL.- The' re- 'cesses are practieallywedge-shaped,as shown so that when ,the .casing )I is moved in one direction the rollers will Wedge 'between the tof.
disk L and Wall ,at-the narrow endfofthe 'recesses to lock the parts togetherby frictio'nal contact,;and, conversely', when the'casin'g'v is moved in the Opposite direction-tl1e'rol1ers= willj'shiftto the enlarged portion of thel r ecessesand permit the parts to move fre'ey one, upon the other. In'order to insure the proper frietional engagement of the rollers, they are actuated toward the smaller ends of the recesses 'm/by' means of springs n. This arrangement pro- Y, vides a friction-clutch by which theshaft H will be rotated when the casing Mis oscillated or. turned back andlforth. and in order to nre,-
This vframe lorl casting also presents a horizontal vent a. backward rotation@ sai'dsfiaftva spring-actuated'pawl o is provided which eu v gages ratchet-teeth h'., formed on said shaft'.ll
The pawl consists of a spring-plate secured lto the frame Gand having a set-screw o for l adjusting thetension.
The casing M is provided with a .proiectionl' lm2', havingja square opening in which fits they bent end of a,bifurcated arm P, the parts bcing rigidlysecured to each. other by'a set? screw p. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2:0f the drawings, this bifurcated arm Vis engaged by v y a stud 'r'of a plate R," adjustably secured to the end 'of vthe pitman--pin or wrist-pin s,
whereas in Fig. 6 themeans` for oscillating,
the arm consists of a to the shaft-T.'v l
stud or cam t, secured From the foregoingdescription', in connection with theaccompa'nying drawings, the operation of the device will be readily ,understood, for when-the arm P is osci11ated,"ei'ther by themeans shown in'Fgs. 1 and 2 or that shown in Fig. 6, azrotation will be ,imparted to the shaft H 'through the friction-clutch and such motion communica-ted to the casing B through the intervention of the gearwheel I and pinion I', the particular style of gearing causin g the casing B to be;rotated at a comparatively-- vdw rate Vtdi? speed, and as the threaded piston-rod Erotates with said casing B it'will act to press the' disk or pistoni? down upon the dope or grease and force the same through the feed-opening 'a onto the .bearings to be lubricated..l 4 Then the disk or piston is Vmoved to the 4bottom ofthe cup, it will rest uponlthe' head'- orV stop e out of engagement with `the threads. In refilling ing the cover the disk or piston is Screwed upon the rod tothe ,upper part thereof before repla'cingsaidl cover.
'It will be noted that the device is very sim-- ple, cheap,'and eiective, and by the particu- Ywith respect thereto and provided with a de-.
