IVERT LARSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LUBRIGATOR.
Specification of Letters latent.
Application filed November 20, 1911.
Patented June 25, 1912.
Serial No. 661,443.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVERT LARSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lubricators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to lubricating devices of the rotary force-feed type; and my primary object is to provide an oiler of simplified construction, increased durability, and improved operation.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which- 1 Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of the improved lubricator constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2, a section taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1.
In the form illustrated, the device comprises a reservoir, or chamber, A; and pumping mechanism B mounted therein. The reservoir may be of any suitable form or construction. As shown, it is in the form of a cylinder having a bottom wall 1 and an external flange 2 at its upper end, shown connected by bolts 3 to the bottom of a crank case 4, the upper end of the cylinder being open and in registration with an opening 5 in the bottom of the crank case. Any preferred arrangement may be used, however.
The mechanism B, in the form illustrated, comprises a stationary member, or cylinder, 6, having its lower end rigidly secured to the bottom of the casing A by a bolt 7; a cam-plate, or disk, 8, secured on the lower end of the stationary member 6 and equipped with a series of annularly arranged cams 9; and a rotary pump-carrying cylinder 10, surmounting the plate 8 and encompassing the stationary cylinder 6. The member 6 has an enlarged upper end presenting an external flange 11, which has a flat annular lower face against which the flat faced end of the rotary cylinder 10 bears. Extending vertically through the flanged upper portion of the stationary cylinder 6 are ports, The ducts 12 are annularly arranged, and with them communicate the tubes, or leads, 13, through which the oil may be conducted to the bearings (not shown) which are to be lubricated.
The rotary cylinder 10, which is journaled on the stationary cylinder or post 6 and confined between the collars 8 and 11 thereof, is equipped with a spur-gear 14, with which meshes a pinion 15 mounted on the lower end of a shaft 16, which may be operated from any source, as for instance, from the shaft of an engine. -Mounted on the rotary cylinder 10 is a pump 17 whose axis is parallel with the axis of the cylinder. The bore or cylinder of the pump is formed integrally with the rotary member 10, and has at its upper end a port 18, which is adapted to be brought successively into registration with the annularly arranged ports 12. The piston 19 of the pump is formed hollow and has an open upper end, while the shank 20 of the piston projects from the lower end of the pump cylinder and is equipped with a wheel 21 mounted on a pivot 22, which has a shank portion 23, which moves in a guide 24 with which the rotary member 10 is provided. Within the hollow piston is confined a coil-spring 25 whose upper end bears against the upper end of the pump cylinder bore, while the lower end bears against the bottom of the bore in the piston itself. The bore in the piston communicates with a port or axial passage 26 in the piston stem, which is guarded by an inwardly opening ball valve 26, and the passage 26 communicates with a transverse passage 27, which is adapted to serve as an intake for the oil when the piston descends.
The plate 8 is preferably formed separately from the stationary cylinder 6, being of annular form and fitted on the reduced lower end of the member 6, where it is secured by a set-screw 28. The cams 9 are substantially in the form of truncated cones and have threaded shanks which pass through threadedperforations in the plate 8, and are secured or locked by nuts 29.
The operation will be readily understood. The cylinder 10 is rotated through the medium of the wheel 14, and carries the pump in an annular path. In this operation, the camwheel 21 rides on the upper fiat surface of-the plate 8 and over the cams 9, as they are encountered. When the piston descends, the oil (contained in the chamber A) is drawn into the hollow piston through the ports 27 and 26, and when the cam wheel rides over a cam, the charge of oil is discharged through the port 18 and that one of the ports 12 of the stationary cylinder with which the port 18 happens to be in V the bore of the pump cylinder, which tends to maintaina close joint between the rotary member andthe flange 11, so that at the moment of discharge such pressure will serve to prevent leakage.
It may be added that the simplified construction herein shown is well adapted to use in connection with the crank case of an engine in a system where the oil is delivered copiously through'the leads 13 to the several bearings of the machine and the excess oil is allowed to return to the crank case. In such an arrangement, adjustmentof the cams 9 is unnecessary after they are once secured, as the, piston operates always to deliver an excess of oil to the bearing.
turers at a very reasonable price.
It may be added that the shaft 16 is preferably journaled in bearings 30 and 31 carried by the flanges l1 and 8, respectively, of 1 r the stationary cylinder 6.
i the combination of a stationary member hav- The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissiblein view of the prior art.
