Description

W. A. BRUNKER.
Lifting-lacks.
No. 39,04. PatentedMay 20,1873.
ifi/72555165 mffmf 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. BRUNKER, OF FARMERSBUBG, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT INv LlFTING-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,041, dated May 20, 1873; application filed January 10, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. A. BRUNKER, of Farmersburg, in the county of Sullivan and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Fence-Lifter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact deseription of the same, reference being had to vraising rail or panel fences when required,
for resetting posts or stakes, or insertion ot' supporting-blocks, or other repairs.
In the drawing, Figure lis aside view, and Fig. 2 an end view of my apparatus.
The frame of my device is composed of a base-piece or foot, A, and a vertical bifureated or slotted standard, A', supported by semicircular braces C C. Alever, A, is pivoted in the slot of the standard, and may be adjusted vertically therein by adj listing the fulorum-pin in the series of holes a. Akeeper, c, is attached to this lever, and a ratchet-bar, B, pivoted to the foot A, engages therewith. The lever is protected by sheet metal F on its upper side, and the same is bent up to form a slight projectiou,e, at the front end. In the construction and arrangementuof these parts there is nothing new. A lifting plate or lever,
D, is hinged to the foot of the standard A', so
as to swing vertically up and down. An iron stirrup or link, E, is employed to connect the lever Al and D, the same being slipped over the end of each, as shown.
v The operation of the device is as follows:
The lifter being set in proper position near the fence to be raised, the ratchet-bar is dis engaged from the keeper C to allow the lever A to be elevated and the plate D to belowered and inserted beneath the bottom rail. The long arm of the lever A is then depressed, which raises the free end of lever D through the medium of the stirrup E, and thereby, also, elevates the fence, when a block may be inserted under it, or such other operation or repair effected as may be required, the levers being meanwhile held locked in their position by the bar B. When the repair is completed, the disengagement ofthe barB enables the fence to be lowered and the lifter removed therefrom. It will be observed that, if the stirrup E be slipped ed the end of lever A, the device becomes practically a carriagejack, and admirably adapted to all the required functions of one.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the hinged lever D and stirrup E with the pivoted lever Al and a locking device, B, substantially as shown and described, to operate as specified.
WILLIAM A. BBUNKER.
