UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS ORTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-QLIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,019, dated May 20, 1873; application filed March 29, .1873. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Trros. ORTON, of Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Clips, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to the construction of a spring paper-clip; and consists in a spring secured to a suitable base,
having its front edges cutaway at an oblique angle and serrated, so as to press down upon and hold the paper, the pressure being regulated by a thumb-screw, as will be more fully set forth hereafter.
The accompanying drawing represents my invention.
a represents a suitable base of any kind, to'which the spring I) is secured, as shown in Figure 1. This spring may be of any suitable construction, having its front edges beveled away at c, and provided with fine saw-teeth or serrations, which are made to press down upon the edges of the paper by means of a thumb-screw, e, or its equivalent. The package of paper has one of its ends made slanting, so as to correspond to the beveled edge of the spring, and when put under the spring and held, as shown in the drawing, one sheet at a time can be detached without injury to it or aifecting any of the others. In Fig. 2 is shown a modification of my invention, in which, instead of the spring itself being cut away, as shown in Fig. 1, a beveled block, a, provided with suitable serrations or teeth, may be used. To the top of this block is secured any suitable spring, I), which presses down upon the paper and holds it securely in place, the edges of the paper being arranged, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to correspond to the bevel of the block.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A paper-clip spring having a serrated beveled edge, substantially as described.
2. The spring b having the beveled edge 0, in combination with the thumb-screw e and base a, substantially as set forth.
3. A spring with beveled edge, in combina tion with a base, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I hereunto affix my signature this 4th day of March, 1873.
. THOS. ORTON. Witnesses:
