Description
BERNARD BURNEN, OF YORK, N. Y.
VALVE-LIFTER.
Specification of Lcttersl'atent. Patented A 30 192 Application filed June 29, 1920. Serial No. 392,717.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, BERNARD C. BURNEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valve-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in valve spring lifters for internal combustion engines.
Heretofore, tools of this character placed on the market consist of a valve stem engaging arm which merely consists of a bifurcation at one end thereof for the reception of a valve stem. Tools of this nature cannot be used in all instances, as the diameters of the valve stems vary according to the size of the engine, therefore it is the primary object of my invention to provide a tool adapted for use on all engines, the same consisting of two devices, both movable with relation to each other, one of said devices having lateral adjustment to accommodate valve stems of various diameters.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple of construction, and yet be strong and durable in operation.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement of parts which will hereinafter be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application,
Figure 1, is a view in side elevation of my invention applied to the valve of an internal combustion engine.
Fig. 2, is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3, is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the valve stem engaging jaws.
The numeral 1 represents the casing of an internal combustion engine, 2 the valve,
8 the valve stem and 4 the valve spring, all
of which are of the usual well known construction and to which my invention is shown applied.
My invention consists of an upright 5, the lower end of which has pivoted thereto as at 6, a device consisting of a pair of arms 7. The extremities of the arms 7 are formed to provide jaws 8. In order that my devlce may be applied to various size valves regardless of the diameter of the valve stem, I have provided means for adusting the jaws 80f the arms 7, which consists of pins 9 and 9 carried by one of the arms 7, said pins 9 extending through slots 10 in the other arm 7. Recesses 11, are formed in the arms 7 carrying the bolts 9, into which are seated one end of springs 12, the other end of said springs abutting the inner face of one of the arms 7. One of the said bolts 9 and preferably the one nearest the jaw 8, is provided with screw threads to receive a thumb nut 13. It will be readily seen that by unscrewing the thumb nut 13, the sprlngs 12, will force the arms 7 apart thereby expanding the jaws 8 to surround various size valve stems.
A device 14 is provided for vertical move ment on the upright 5. The device 14: has formedtherewith, a block 15 through which the uprlght 5 is adapted to pass and a sleeve 16 having an internally threaded bore 17 for the reception of a screw 18, the said screw terminating in a handle 19 at its upper end, the lower end being tapered to engage with the head of the valve. The upright 5 is provided with a series of open lngs 20, and the block 15 is provided with a transverse opening 21. A pin or thumb screw 22 is passed through the opening 21 in the block 15 and also through an alining opening 20 and the upright 5 to allow and to hold the device 14 in an adjusted position.
Having described what I consider the preferred form of my invention, I wish it to be understood that no limitations are necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
WVhat is claimed as new is 2- 1. A valve stem lifter including a bar, a block slidable on said bar, means for adjustably locking said block on said bar, an internally threaded sleeve carried by said block, a screwcarried by said sleeve, arms pivoted to said bar, jaws formed on said arms, and means for expanding and locking said arms, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A valve stem lifter including a bar, a block slidable on said bar, means for adjustably locking said block on said bar, an arms to, receive the pins, springs interposed internally threaded sleeve carried by said between said arms and a nut carried by said bar, jaws formed on said arms, means for threaded pin, as and for the purpose set 10 expanding and locking said arms, said means forth.
consisting of pins carried by one of said In testimony whereof I have afiixed my arms, certain of said pins being screwv signature. threaded, slots formed in the other of said BERNARD C. BURNEN.
