, zen of the United States, residing at Clevelind in the county of Cuyahoga and State of hio, ful Improvement in Advertising Change- Trays, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an advertising device in the form of a change tray for use on the counters of cigar stands, cashiers desks of lunch rooms and restaurants, and in any or all similar places.

The purpose of the invention, broadly speaking, is to provide a change tray associated with an advertisement which is revealed, or at least rendered more cons icuous or attractive, upon the deposit o one or more coins in the change tray.

More limitedly, the purpose is to provide a change tray bearing an advertisement and incorporating an illuminating device and controlling means therefor which is actuated by the placing of a coin or coins in the tray, so that the illuminating device will become effective to reveal or attract attention to the advertisement.

Further objects are to provide an apparatus of the foregoing nature that is comparatively simple of construction and consequently cheap of production and durable; and which is highly eicient as an advertising medium, and thoroughly convenient of use as a change tray. y y

In the accompanying drawing I have illusl trated an embodiment of my invention through which the foregoing objects, and others which will become apparent as this description proceeds, are attained.

In the present preferred embodiment of my invention I employ a base carrying an electrical illuminating device and a switch for controlling the same, and I pivotally support above the base a shell incorporating the change tray, the shell being slightly overbalanced in one direction by the weight of a coin, and acting, when so rocked or overbalanced, to close the switch. Fig. 3 is a plan of the present/instance I use an opaque glass for the shell and apply to its inner surface an advertisement which is revealed thro-ugh the glass when the illuminating device is lighted, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to suchan arrangement, it being clearly within the scope of my invention to make the shell of any desired material, having an opaque section for the advertisement; or in fact I may modify the embodiment of my invention t0 any, extent desired so long as I restrict myself to the spirit of the claims.

As shown in the drawing, the base 1 is in the form of a shallow circular pan having knife edge bearing elements 2Arising from incandescent lamp 3 is supported within the base, by a socket 4; and a two-strand electrical conductor` 5 is led in through the side of the base and has one o f its strands connected to a terminal ofA the socket 4 while its vother strand is electrically connected to one side of having electrical connection with the remaining terminal of the socket 4. In the present instance the switch comprises a bridging element 9, carried by the coin tray, and the ends of which are adapted to be dipped into the mercury wells 10, supported by the base, when the tray is depressed under the weight of one or more coins.

The change tray proper, designated 12, is formed by a depression in the shell 13, thel shell extending down over and about the base 1 and having bearing sockets 14 which rest upon the knife edge bearing elements 2. The depending side wall of the shell remote from the coin tray is made thick enough at one` point to contain/a well 16 into which suitable weight material 17, such as shot, may be confined by a closure 18 the same being shown, in the present instance,

as an ordinary cork stopper.l This arrange- 'ment provides a cheap yet very effective adlighted, thus making it more attractive and l creating more comment than if it were at all times displayed.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim is l. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a base, a change tray pivotally supported thereby, and bearing. an advertisement, an electrical illuminating device carried by the base for lighting the advertisement, a switch supported by the base and adapted to be closed by the tilting of the change tray under the weight of a coin, and a circuit including the illuminating device and switch.

In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a base, a vshell pivotally supported thereby and bearing an advertisement, the shell incorporating a change tray on one side of its pivotal axis, an adjustable Weight carried by the shell on the other vside of its pivotal axis, an velectrical illuminating device for the advertisement, a switch adapted to be closed by the tilting of the shell `under the weight ofl a coin in the change tray, and an electric circuit includingthe switch and illuminating device.

3. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a base, a shell, pivotally supported above the base and extending downward about and practically concealing the base, the shell bearing an advertisement and incorporating a change tray, an illuminating device carried by the base for lighting the advertisement, a switch arranged to be closed by the tilting of the shell under the weight of a coin within the change tray, and van electric circuit including the illuminating device and switch.

4. In a device of, the character set forth, the combination of a base, a shell of translucent material pivotally supported by the base and incorporating a change tray on one side of its pivotal axis, the inner surface of the shell bearing an advertisement, an illuminating device within the shell, and controlling means therefor arranged to be actuated by the tilting of the shell under the weight of a coin Within the change tray.

5. In a device of the character set forth,

Vthe combination of arbase incorporating a translucent advertisement and a change tray, an electric illuminating device for lighting the advertisement and concealed by the base, and a normally open electric circuit including the illuminating device and arranged to be-closed by the placing of a coin in the change tray.
