Description

UNITED STATES WILLIAM B. JACKSON, J.
PATENT OrrxoE.
MORRIS OHILDS, AND ORLANDO J. OHILDS, OF
UTIOA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS..
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,895, dated May 13, 1873; application filed March 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, WILLIAM B. J AcKsoN, J. Monnis (Mum, and ORLANDO J. OHILns, of Utica, county of Oneida and State of. New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plow-Olevises and we hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
Nature and Object of the Invention.
Our invention relates to an improvement in the manner of adjusting the clevis of plows so as to facilitate a deep or shallow cut. It consists of two devices, each having its axis at right angles to the other, and each having its respective concentric movement during adjustment. One of the clevises has a vertical axis which passes through the plow-beam,,
having its movement in a horizontal plane, "and is provided with a ratchet in its face.
The teeth of this ratchet are formed in a segment of a circle, and are'engaged by a small tongue which projects from the draft-clevis. The draft-clevis has its axis in the plow-beam also, and moves, when not engaged by the ratchet, in a vertical plane. There is provided, also, in this clevis a lateral adjustment, which consists of a series of holes formed vertically in the draft-clevis for the pin which secures the draft-hook. This lateral adjustmentf is made by moving the pin to the right or le t.
Description of Drawing.
B is the clevis provided with the ratchet, and
is secured to the plow-beam by the pin 0," which forms the axis of this ratchet-clevis. The pin D serves to keep the ratchet-clevis B from swinging about its axis while the plow is in activeuse.
The vertical adjustment of the draft-clevis is made as follows: The pin 1) is withdrawn from the plow-beam, the ratchet-clevis is free to move to the right or left, which movement frees the tongue cwof the draft-clevis. The draft-clevis is now lifted up, provided a deeper hold of the plow is. required, until the tongue 0 is in the same plane with the space between the teeth cl (l, and the ratchet-clevis brought around until the pin D can enter its hole in the ratchet-clevis and the plow-beam.
The pin is now dropped in and keyed or bolt-j ed underneath, and the new adjustment is made. The hook E is provided with a loop /K, in which is secured a link, a, which secures the double-tree from backing out of said hook. When the loop of the double-tree is passed over the point of the hook the loop it yields and allows it to pass forward, and then it drops back by its own gravity against the hook and cannot be forced back further, but may be lifted by the finger when it is necessary to release the double-tree. The hook E is also provided with the elongated slot in, which may leave it to move freely about its axis, and accommodate itself to the draft-clevis.
Claim.
What we claim as new and our invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A draft-clevis provided with a series of holes, and a tongue projecting inward from Witnesses CHAS. H. Gimme. A. D. FELoH.
