Willi!!! v UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIcE.
EDWIN W. IBULLARD, OF WHITNEYVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WINCHESTER REPEATIN G ARMS CO., OF- NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION."
BRACEHEAID.
Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patented Aug, 30, 1921.
- Application filed September 13, 1920. Serial No. 409,851.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN WV. BULLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whitneyville, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brace- Heads; and I do hereby declare the'following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a view in vertical central section of a brace head constructed in accordance with my invention and shown as applied to the upper end of the crank of a brace shown in elevation and broken away.
Fig. 2, a reverse plan view of the head with the crank in transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, a detached broken view in elevation of the upper end of the crank.
Fig. 4, a detached view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of the assembling-cup.
Fig. 5, a corresponding view of the ballcup.
Fig. 6, a reverse plan view thereof.
Fig. 7, a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of the retaining-ring.
Fig. 8, a reverse plan view thereof.
Fig. 9, a broken view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of one of the modified forms of my improvement.
Fig. 10, a reverse plan view thereof.
My invention relates to an improved head for bit braces, drill braces and similar tools, the object being to produce a simple, durable and easy-running structure.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in a brace head having certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my inventionas herein shown, I employ a one-piece assembling-cup comprising a tapered sleeve 11 and flange 12, the sleeve fitting over the upper end of the crank 13 and the flange having its edge 14 spun into an annular recess 15 formed near the inner ed e of the peri hery of the wooden brace ead body 16 of the ordinary by the ball-cup is held in place. The said ball-cup receives the upper end of the crank 13, the same being formed with a V-shaped raceway 19 receiving a series of balls 20, also riding upon the inner face of the ball-cup and held in place by means of a race-ring 21, having an inclined face 22 upon which the balls ride, and held in place by the resting of its edge upon the extreme inner edge of the flange 12 of the assembling-cup. This ring as thus arranged couples the head and crank with freedom of relative rotation.
It will be understood that after the parts above described are assembled, the edge 14 of the assembling-cup is spun into the groove 15 of the head 16, whereby the several parts are held together in operative relationship.
In the modification shown by Figs. 9 and 10, the construction above described is altered in so far as the flange 23 of the sleeve 24 is formed with screw holes 25 for the reception of screws 26 which are entered directly into the wooden body 27. The only difference between the two constructions is that in the modified construction screws 26 are employed for securing the body in place instead of spinning the flange of the assembling-cup into a groove in the body.
I claim:
In a brace head, the combination with a one-piece, sheet-metal assembling-cup comprising a sleeve and an annular flange concentric therewith and offsetting therefrom ball-cup and raceway, and a race-ringformed independently of the assembling-cup and ball-cup and inserted within the open end of the latter for co-action with the said specification in the presence of tWo subscribballs and for holding the crank in place ing witnesses.
Within the ball-cup the outer ed e of the 7 V said race-ring restin g upon the flzuige of the IN L 5 assembling-cup at the juncture of the said WVitnesses:
flange With the sleeve of the said cup. ERIK S. PALMER,
In testimony whereof, I have signed this U A. E. HODGSON.
