Specification of Iie'tt ers Patent.
Applic'atiolfiled April 14, 1921. Serial no. 461,176.
T o alllwhom it concern Be it known that I, OsoAsR. ALTWEIN, a citizen of theUnitedStateaand a resident of Asheville, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and ImprovedComb, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in combs, and more particularly to'combs designed for straightening kinky hair, an'obj ect of theinvention being to provide acomb a cushion compensating means is provided to prevent cutting the hair and to allow for bearing thicknesses or strands ofhair between the teeth of the comb. In other words, the elastic cushioning means serves to provide a cushion grip rather than a positively controlled grip which might injure the hair.
A further object is to improve upon the construction illustrated in Patent No. 1,362,460, granted to me December 14, 1920.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved comb.
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation at right angles to Fig. 1. r I i Fig. 3 is a view in sectional elevation with one stationary member of the comb removed to illustrate the relation of the movable member to the stationary member.
Fig. 4 is a view in transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a view in longitudinal section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
My improved comb comprises a pair of stationary members 1 and 2, both having teeth 3 which come together at their free ends, and said membe s 1 and 2 are recessed t-shad M 23, 1921.
to accommodate a movable comb member 4:,
the latter havingteeth 5 normally in register with the teeth 3 of-members 1 and 2. a
The members 1 and 2 are formed with integral recessed shanks Gfor. the accommodation of the shank 7 of the movable member 4: and a pair of screws 8 are projected through one of the members 1 and screwed into the other member 2 to effectually hold the-partsjin proper formation, but permit an easy removalof the parts to enable them to be thoroughly cleaned so as to render the device entirely sanitary in use. Theserecesses along shank are to admit circulation ofair to reduce heat'from shank and wooden handle.
A handle 9 is secured onto the shanks 6 in any'approved manner :and is provided with a bracket 10 on'which a' lever 11 is pivotally connected by-means of'a bolt 12. The long arm of this lever llis provided with a finger pad or platform 13 as a non-conductor of heatto protect the comb, and a coiled spring 14 is located in a socket 15 in the handle 9 and exerts outward pressure against the long end of the lever 11, said lever 11 being provided with a centering stud 16 receiving the outer end of the spring 14 to hold the latter against displacement.
This lever 11 is made with a shorter end 17 located at right angles to the longer end of the lever and movable through a slot 18 in one of the shanks 6. The free end of the shorter end 17 projects into a recess 19 in the shank 7 of movable member 4 and a coiled spring 20 is interposed between the end 17 and one end wall of the recess 19 so as to provide a cushion between said lever and the movable member to cushion the movement of the movable member in one direction.
Normally the end 17 of the lever 11 is held against the end wall 22- of recess 19 by means of the spring 20, and when in this position, the teeth of the several members of the comb are in register, as shown clearly in F ig. 3. The teeth of the members 1, 2 and 4: are preferably curved longitudinally of the comb so as to give a more effectual entrance of the teeth into the hair, but it is obvious that the invention is not limited to the particularshape of teeth.
It is to be understood that in operation 1 the comb has be heated in order to produce the best results and the hair may be treated In operation, the hair is placed between the lever will engage the coiled spring 20 and exert a pressure on the movable member 4: tending to bind or grip the hair between the teeth 5 of the movable member and the teeth 3 of the stationary members 1 and 2. The spring 20 will prevent any possibility of shearing the hair and hence, will compensate for an excessive number of strands between any pairs of teeth and this spring cushion, therefore, performs a most important function in the device in that it prevents injury to the hair regardless of the quantity which may be between any series of teeth. The comb beingheated and-the strands of hair being frictionally clamped with any desired pressure between the teeth and the movable and stationary members of the comb, Whensaid comb is moved lo'ngi tudinally or along the length of the hair, it will operate to iron or straighten out the kink in the hair as will be readily understood. V
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described Without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the vappended claims.
I claim:
1. A comb of the character described, com
prising a stationary comb member, a movable comb member, teeth on said comb members normally in alinement, means for moving the movable member, and cushioning means interposed between said last-memtioned means andthe movable member.
2. A comb of the character described, c0mprising a pair of stationary members, a movable comb member located'between the stationary members, a handle fixed to the stationary members, a springpressed lever con nected to the handle, and a spring interposed between the lever and the movable member.
3.: A comb, comprising a pair of stationary comb members, shanks on saidmembers, a handle secured to said shanks, a movable comb member, a shank on the movable comb member movable within the shanks of, the stationarymembers, a bracket on the handle, a spring pressed lever on the bracket, the
shank of said movable member having a recess therein, intoone endof which said operating'lever pro ects, and a colledspring lnterposed between said lever and one end of said recess, whereby the movement of the movable member bythe lever is cushioned by said sprin osonii RICHARD ALTWEIN.
