Be it known that I, GAn'rANoRArizzr, mechanician, subject of the King of'Italy, residing at Parabiago, Province-of Milan, Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Electric Folding and Curling Irons, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an iron designed to fold and curl hairs, stuffs and like, which is electrically heated by a suitable unit disposed within one of the iron branches having to this effect tubular shape.
A form of execution of the invention is represented, by way of example, in the annexed drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an external view, partly in section, of the iron, showing the binding of its two folding and curling branches;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the tubular iron branch which carries the heating unit;
Figs. 3 and 4 respectively are an amplified sectional View of a portion of the heat ing unit and a perspective, differently amplified, view of the same, without the insulating winding applied around it, and
Fig. 5 is a view of a coupling by means of which the iron can be separate from the portion of it carrying the terminals, said coupling being applied in a form of execution of the handle of heating branch of the iron somewhat different from that shown by Fi 2. I
The iron fi ig. 1) consists in a concave metallic branch 2, the latter passing, as usual, through an opening 3 of the former and being connected to the same by means of the pivot 4, in such a manner as to enter into the hollow of 1, when the two branches are approached to one another by causing them to turn on the pivot 4.
Such a movement is efiected, as usual, when the handles 5 and 6, made either or wood or any other suitable material, of the two branches 1 and 2 are closed, the branch 1 being fixedly mounted within the handle 5 and the branch 2 being so applied within the handle 6 as to be drawn out when the forcing screw 7 is loosed.
Within the tubular branch 2 (Fig. 2), closed at its upper part by a metallic cover 8, which is either screwed in the branch 2 or otherwise connected to the same, the heat ing unit 9 is disposed, the resisting wire of which abuts to the terminals 10 and 11 car- Specification of Letters Patent.

ried by the insulating support 33, said terminalsbeing also connectedto the conductors 13 and 14, which enter into the hollow handle 610i the tubular branch2 through the hole of the plug 15 fixed to the lower portionof 6.. The handle 6 ofthe heating branch 2 of the iron is formed by two portions screwed together at 16, so as to allow, when the lower portion is screwed ofi, the terminals to be inspected and separated from the conductors, if, on account of repairs or like, the heating unit must be taken out from the branch 2 through the upper opening closed by the cover 8.
The heating unit (Figs. 3 and 4) is formed by a resisting wire 17 wound upon two parallel mica plates 18 and 19 separated from one another by a third mica plate 20, in such a manner that, to the end of obtaininga continuous winding of the resisting wire, the last is caused to pass upon the plate 20. At the external sides of the plates 18 and 19 carrying the resistance, two other mica plates 21 and 22 are disposed and the unit thus formed is covered by a winding 23 of an asbestos cord or any other insulating material. At the lower part, the ends of the resisting wire 17 are connected, as said, to the terminals 10 and 11.
In the form of execution to which the particular of Fig. 5 relates, the lower portion 24 of the handle 6 is not screwed to the portion 25, but constitutes one of the portions of an electrical coupling with which the folding and curling iron is provided. Within the piece 25 the hole 26, through which the conductors 13 and 14 enter, abuts to a greaterhollow 27, forming a projection upon which the two L-shaped metallic plates 28 and 29 are fixed by means of the screws 34. Two other L-shaped metallic plates 30 and 31 are also fixed by means of the screws 35 upon the lower end of 25, said metallic plates being separated from one another by a plate oi mica or any other insulating material and being so disposed as to enter by sliding into the space between the contact plates 28 and 29.
The conductors 13 and 14 are connected to the plates 28 and 29, while the ends of the resisting wire are connected to the plates 30 and 31. In such a manner, drawing out the portion 24 or" the handle from the portion 25, the folding and curling iron is switched off.
Having now described and ascertained my invention and in What manner the same is to be performed, I claim 1. In an electric folding and curlingiron of the character described comprising two pivotally connected metallic branches one of which is of a tubular shape and closed at its outer end, handles on the inner ends of the branches, terminals on the handle ,ofthe tubular branch, a heating unit mounted in said tubular branch and connected to the terminals, said unit consisting of a pair of insulating plates, a resistance 'wire Wound continuously about said plates, means for insulating said plates from one another as well as at their'external sldes, and an insulatinglcord arranged about all of the plates and wire.

An electric folding and curling iron comprising two pivotally connected metallic branches, handlesfor the branches, a heat ing unit confined in one of the branches, electric terminals connected with the handle of the branch carrying the heating unit, anelectriccoupling mounted on the handle between the unit and the terminals and slidable contact plates for controlling the passage of current to the unit, substantially as described.
