ALEG STEIN AND GEORGE STEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FINGER-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 23, 1921.
Application filed iune 17, 1920, Serial No. 389,557. Renewed July 14, 1921. Serial No. 484,818.
To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that we, Anne STEIN and (.inonen STEIN, citizens of the United States,
and residents of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Finger-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to finger protectors or finger safety guards. The object of the invention is to provide shields or protecting guards adapted to be securely positioned on the forefinger and thumb o the hand so as to protect the fingers against injury from cutting implements, grind stones, pohshing stones and like ap aratus or de vices in the operation of whlch the fingers of the operator are exposed to injury.
One object of the invention is to provide a finger guard adapted to protect and cover the two first joints of a finger while permitting full freedom in the use of the finger to rasp even tiny objects.
Knother object is to provide a finger guard comprising a plurality of sections so secured or attached to each other that the natural use of the fingers, in bending for instance, is not impaired or hindered.
Still another object is to provide finger guards of simple and inexpensive construction together with simple and efficient means for attaching the guards to the hand.
With the above and other objects in view, our invention is embodied in nger guards constructed and arranged as hereinafter set forth while reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1. is a front view or end V ew of a finger guard embodying the invention.
Fig. 2. is a side view of the guard.
Fig. 3. is a top plan view of the guard.
Fig. 4. is a bottom view, and
Fig. 5. is a view showing the guard applied to the forefinger and thumb of a hand.
Our improved guard consists of two sections, an outer or front section 6 and an inner or rear section 7. The outer section is shaped to form a top shield portion 8 and side portions 9, 9 which merge into bottoms or inside retaining lugs 10, 10. The front section is further provided with rearwardly extending hinge lugs 11, 11 provided with a pivot 12, one on each side. The pivots 12 may be formed by being struck up or punched up from the body of the lugs 11.
The forward portion 25 of the front section forms a finger tip protecting wall.
The rear section 7 is formed with a top shield portion 15 extending forwardl as at 16 to closely fit the rear edge 17 of t 1e forward portion 6. The rear section further forms downwardly extending curved side portlons 18, 18 which merge into inside or bottom lugs or wings 19, 19. From the side portions 18 extend forwardly the hinge lugs 20, 20 which have punched up sockets 21, 21 adapted to receive the pivots 12 aforesaid. 22 is an aperture in the rear section 7.
The finger guards will be formed of suitable material, either cast, stamped or drawn or otherwise formed. The material may be metal, rubber, celluloid or a composition. It may be non-transparent or transparent or translucent. The guard will further be shaped to follow as closely as may bethe usual shape of the fingers and may be provided in sizes to fit and in shapes to be used on one, two or more fingers of the hand. As ordinarily only the forefinger and thumb are used to grasp objects, only corresponding finger guards are shown in Fig. 5.
It is preferable to make the guards of slightly springy or yielding material as thereby provision is made for pressing togetherthe lugs 10, 10 and 19, 19 to suit the thickness of the fingers.
As shown in Fig. 5 the guards are used by placing them over the tip or ends of the fingers with the shields uppermost. It will be seen then, as shown, that the two outer joints of the fingers are protected without impairing their use. The fingers may be bent in gripping or handling objects and the finger pads as indicated at 30 remain exposed.
The guards bend on the hinges or pivots 12 as shown and in securing them to the hands an elastic 35 may be used which is simply crossed before passing it around the wrist as at 86. An elastic is preferable because it yields to the natural movement of the fingers while working and retains the guard on the finger securely, yet without un. due strain or pull.
The two sections of the guard are made separately and joined securely by snapping the outside hinge lugs 20, 20 over the inside hinge lugs 11, 11 whereby the pivots 12 snap into place and whereby rivets and screws are eliminated.
Fig. 5 illustrates the fingers in the natural position of gripping a tiny object and it will.
1 or attaching t 10.
7 not intend to limit our invention by what has beendisclosed in'the foregoing, but that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the principle of the invention and within the scope of the ap pended claims.
'- We claim z g 1. finger guard comprising an outer finger tip section and a rear section, means for pivoting the one section upon'the other, both of said sections being substantially semicircular in cross section and each of said sections having'bottom retaining l'ugs, and means for attaching the said finger guard'to' the hand of'the user thereof, v
.2. Finger guards for the two first joints of the forefinger and the thumb, each ofsaid guards comprisingan outer finger tip section and a rear or inner section pivoted one upon the other and an elastic having its free 7 retaining lugs, which latter serve as means for adjusting said sections circumferentially V and means for pivoting one of the said sections on the other section.
4. A finger guard comprising a finger tip section having an outer depending finger tip protecting wall and a rear curved edge portion, a rear uard section having a forwardly extenring top portion adapted to conform and fit closel to the said rear edge of th finger tip section, pivots formed in the latter, pivot receiving recesses formed in said rear section for pivoting the finger tip section within the said rear section and means for attaching the said guard to the hand of the user thereof.
Signed at New York, in the county of New Yorkand State of New York, this 15th day of June, A. D. 1920.
