Description
H. W. LEE AND J. W. SWINDALE.
AMMUNITION HOIST.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 22, I921.
1 ,388, 349, Patented Aug. 23, 1921.
HUG-H WARREN LEE AND JOHN WINDLOW SWIND-ALE, OF NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, ENGLAND, ASSIGNORS TO SIR W. G. ARMSTRONG, WHITWORTI-I AND COMPANY, LIMITED, OF NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, ENGLAND.
AMMUNITION-HOIST.
Application filed March 22, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HUGH WARREN LEE and JOHN WINDLOW SWINDALE, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Elswick Works, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Eng land, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ammunition-Hoists, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ammunition hoists of the type having a series of retaining arms and a series of liftingarms to which is imparted a reciprocating movement up and down a trunk, the arrangement being such that on the upward movement of the lifting arms a projectile is raised whereupon it is caught and held by retaining arms during the downward movement of the lifting arms, and on the next upward movement of the latter the lifting arms above those which before lifted the projectile come beneath it and lift it until it is caught by the retaining arms above those first mentioned, as isdescribed in the specification of U. S. Patent No. 1,366,394.
The object of the present invention is the provision of flash tight doors in the trunk.
According to this invention one or more flash tight doors are arranged in the trunk in such a way that as the lifting arms rise these doors are moved out of the path of the projectiles into pockets in the side of the trunk.
The annexed drawings illustrate an embodiment of our invention.
Figure 1 is a horizontal section of a hoist and Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sections showing a flash tight door in its two extreme positions.
Using where possible reference numbers as in the former specification:
11 is the hoist trunk in which are retaining arms 13 capable of turning on pins 14;

carried by the trunk and actuated by links 10 to which they are connected by pins 101. The lifting arms 29 are actuated by links 28 and pivoted to a slider 21. The flash tight door 15 is moved in and out of the pocket 16 and slides in grooves 17. The flash tight door 15 is connected by links 18 to bell crank levers 19 turning on pivots 20 on the pocket 16. The bell crank levers 19 are connected to the links 10 by a bar 22. When the links 10 are reciprocated the retaining arms 13 and the flash tight door 15 are moved and assume the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
In Fig. 8 the flash tight door 15 has been 7 moved into the pocket 16 to allow of the passage of the projectiles.
l/Vhat we claim is 1. In a hoist, a trunk, a number of retaining arms pivoted to the trunk, a slider, a number of lifting arms pivoted to the slider, means for raising and lowering the slider, means for rocking the lifting arms on their pivots, a flash tight door in the trunk, and means for rocking the retaining arms and actuating the flash tight door.
2. In a hoist, a trunk, a number of retaining arms pivoted to the trunk, a slider,
a number of lifting arms pivoted to the slider, means for raising and lowering the slider, means for rocking the lifting arms on their pivots, a flash tight door in the trunk, a bell crank lever pivoted to the trunk, a link connecting one end of the bell crank lever to the flash tight door, another link to which the retaining arm and the=bellcrank lever are connected, and means for actuating the latter link.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention, we have signed our names this 23rd day of February, 1921.
HUGH WARREN LEE. JOHN WIN DLOW Sl/VINDALE.
