INVENTOR ATTORNEY WITNESS:
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFics.
METHOLD F. SITTA, OIE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TYPEWRITER CABIN E'JJ-JJIESK.
Application filed April 6,
.To all whomit may concern: j
Be it known that I, METHOLD'F. Si'r'ra, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, inthe county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Typewriter Cabinet-Desks,. o f which the following is a specification.
This invention relates'to typewriter cabinet desks andthe principal object is to produce a typewriter cabinet desk in which the typewriter is concealed below the top of the desk when not in use and which maybe quickly and conveniently brought into position to use.
Another object is to provide such a device with means for permitting the typewriter to move into and out of the desk without resorting to the unsightly expedient of making the top in sections.
Another object is to provide means for maintaining the typewriter supporting tablet in horizontal position during use of the typewriter.
In the accompanying of one sheet;
Figure 1, is a perspective View of a desk embodying my improvements.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a View on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents the frame-work of a desk which may be of any suitable construction to support the mechanism hereinafter described. 2 represents rollers supported by said frame-work near the top of the desk and being placed in horizontal alinement as shown in Fig. 2. Upon the rollers 2 is mounted a track 3, which is substantially C-shape in cross section but with the lower upstanding lip removed. The two tracks or rails 3, are pivotally secured to opposite sides of the front edge of a typewriter carrying tablet or slab 4, the reference numeral 5 representing the typewriter which is shown in outline only. 6, represents an arm pivotally connected to the rear portion of the slab or tablet 4:, it being understood that there is one of these arms provided on each side of the tablet 4. Secured to the rear end of the arm 6 by a pivot bolt is a downwardly extending arm 7 carrying at its lower end a wheel 8 which rides in a lower track 9,

said track 9 being substantially the same in I cross section as track 3, this cross sectional form being shown in Fig. 3. A spring 10 is secured to the arm 6, passing around the pivotal point of connection with the arm .7, and is secured at its lower end to the lower arm 7 substantially in the manner shown in Fig. 2. 11 represents a rollersecured to the arm Tand adapted to ride in the track 2 but small enough to pass up through an inclineslot 12 formed in the upper flange of the track 9 near; its forward end.
Brackets 13 are secured to and depending from the top of the desk structure as shown secured to the front end of the tablet 4, the
tablet together with the upper tracks 3 and the arms 6 and 7 will be moved forwardly exactly as if the whole device were merely a drawer in a desk. When the roller 11 comes opposite the slot 12 in the track 9, the spring 10 begins to take effect causing the roller to ride up said slot and when said roller has entirely passed through the slot the springs 10 operate the arms 6 and 7 to move them toward longitudinal alinement with each other, thereby raising the rear end of the tablet up into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2. The tablet is now moved slightly to the rear until its rear end is confined between the fingers 14 and 15 of the brackets 13, whereby it is securely held against movementduring the operation of the typewriter. When it is desired to move the typewriter back into the desk, the rear portion of the tablet is pushed down until the roller 11 enters the slot 12 and then the whole device is pushed back exactly as if it were a drawer.
While I described what I deem to be the best embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without departing'in any manner from the spirit of the invention; and I therefore do not wish to be considered as limiting myself to the exact form of embodiment herein described, nor to anything less than the whole of my invention as herein set forth and as hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims.
And now having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a typewriter supporting tablet, an upper track pivotally connected to said tablet for supporting said tablet, a lower track, and supporting means for said tablet which supporting meansis supported by said lower track.
2. In a device'of the class described, the
combination of a typewriter supporting tablet, an uppertrack pivotally connected to said tabletfor supporting said tablet, a lower track, and means adapted to travel along said lower track, and operable to raise the rear portion of said tablet.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a typewriter supporting tablet, an upper track pivotally connected to sa'idtablet for supporting said tablet, a lower track, means adapted totravel along said lower track, and automatically operable to raise the rear portion of said tablet.
4:. In a device of the class described, the combination of a typewriter supporting tablet, means for pivotally supporting the front end of said tablet, a track, means supported by and riding on said track, and operable for supporting the rear end of said tablet, and an element supported by the last said means and cooperative with said track for controlling rising of the rear end of said tablet by the last said means.
5. The combination of a desk frame, a typewriter supporting tablet, upper track members pivotally secured to the front of said tablet, lower track members rigidly secured to said desk frame, automatic means for moving said tablet to horizontal position, and rollers riding on the second said tracks and adapted to escape there-from so as to permit operation of said automatic means.
In testimony whereof I have signature.
afiixed my METHOLD F. SITTA.
