Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. ISHAM, OFHBURLINGTON, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,8125, dated May 13, 1873; application led March 27, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. IsHAM, of Burlington, in the county of Chittenden and in the State of Vermont, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Lantrens; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a lantern, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.-
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a side elevation of my lantern.
A represents the base or fountain of the lantern, provided at its upper end with the wick-tube B. Around the upper end of the fountain or base A is attached a holder7 G, to hold the globe or chimney D, thereby allowing of the lantern being also used as a lamp. E represents a bail or handle, the ends of which are attached to the base or fountain. Gr represents a removable perforated cap for the upper end of the chimney D, which cap is placed on a bar or rod, a, and the ends of said bar or rod bent downward and passed through loops b b, attached to the sides of the bail or handle E. The bar or rod a is thus allowed to move up and down, so that the cap can be removed and replaced, at pleasure.
This lantern may bc used with kerosene oil, or with any of the usual oils or burningfluids. It gives a great amount of light, because the globe of the lantern extends below the burner or wick-tube, and the light is not shaded by the base of the lantern, as in the ordinary lanterns. It can be cheaply manufactured, and the ordinary lamp-chimneys used with it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the base or fountain A with bail or handle E attached to the same and provided with keepers b b, the burner B, holder C, chimney D, and cap G on the sliding rod or bar a, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I havehereunto set my hand this 10th day of March, -187 3.
