Be it known that I, SMITH HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residincr at South Shaftsbury, in the county lof ennington and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Salt.

and'Pepper Shakers, of which the followinis a specification.

y present invention pertains to salt an pepper shakers of the two compartment type; and it consists in the simple, inexpensive and durable salt and pepper shaker hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

,The body 1 of my novel device is preferably formed in one piece. of glass though it may be formed of any other material and may e either transparent or opaque in the discretion of the manufacturer. The said body includes a diametrical partition 2 by which it is divided into compartments 3 and 4, one compartment being designed to contain salt and the other compartment to coiltain pepper. At a point adjacent to its upper endI the partition 2 is provided at its opposite sides with swells 5. The cover of my novel device is preferably formed ofv v thin sheet metal and includes a lower disk discharge of salt. Struck from the disk 6 are tongues 11 through the medium of which-a channeled member 12 is strongly connected with the Vdisk 6 without the assistance of solder or the like. The channeled member 12 is arranged diametrically at the underside of the disk 6 and is provided with -two groups of members 13 shaped to straddle the upper end of the partition 2 and to spring into and out of engagement with the swells 5. Manifestly the clips 13 in coperation with the swells 5 are adapted vto hold the cover against casual displacement from the body 1. When, however, stress is applied to the disk 6 the cover may body l.

The upper disk 7a is provided with a margina] flange 7b adapted to surround the raised central portion of the disk 6 and to bear on the marginal portion of said disk 6 so as to add to the finished appearance of the cover. Said disk 7a is provided with two groups of apertures 9 and 10, and is also provided with a linger piece 20 and with one or more pointers 21, the said pointers 21 being adapted to coperate with signs such as the letters P and S provided on the marginal portion of the disk 6 in order to indicatel when the .disk 7a is positioned for the discharge of pepper and when it-is positioned for the discharge of salt, it being understood in this connection that when the pepper apertures are opened the salt apertures will be closed and vice versa. In this central portion the disk 7a is provided with a rectangular aperture 25, and extend# ing over the end walls of the said aperture 25 are tongues 26 struck from the disk 6. The said tongues 26 are narrower than the rectangular aperture 25, and while they serve to strongly hold the disk 7a down against the disk 6 they are adapted to permit of suiicient movement of the disk 7a about its center for the opening of the pepper apertures and the closing of the Salt apertures and the openingof the salt apertures and the attendant closing of the pepper apertures. v

It will be apparent from the vforegoing that by observing the sign that is exposed, the user of my novel device is apprised when the disk 7 a is set for the discharge of pepper and when it is set for the discharge of salt, and therefore it is not essential for the body 1 to be made of transparent material. It will bequickly and4 easily pulled off ofthe.

also be apparent that my novel device is susceptible of being cheaply produced inasmuch as the disks 6 and 7a 'of the cover are .connected together of themselves without 'foregoing that while there is no liability of the cover being casually displaced from the body l, the said cover may be expeditiously and easily removed when it is desired to replenish the supply of pepper and salt in the body andmay as readily be replaced on and secured to the body.

While I describe the member 12 as connected with the disk 6 without the assistance of solder I would have it understood that when deemed desirable solder may be employed. I would also have it understood that the word signs as herein employed is intended to comprehend words vsuch as rably of Salt and Pepperf and when such words i are employed the disk 7a will be allowed suflicient movement to cover the one and uncover the other and vice versa.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is

A salt and pepper shaker comprising a body having a partition whereby it is divided into compartments and also. having swells on the sides of the said partition f adjacent to the upper end thereof, in combination with a cover adapted to rest on the body and having at its underside a coupler constructed and arranged to straddle the upper end of the bod partition and to be sprung into and out o engagement with the swells thereof; the said coupler being of channel form in cross section and provided with resilient clips, and being connected in diametrical position to the underside of the cover by tongues struck from a portion of the cover.
