GATE LATCH.
APPLICATION F|LED1UNE 25.1920.
UNiTED STATES I' Param orric.
CLARENCE E. AXLINE, SR., OF BRYANT, ILLIN GATE-namen.
To all whom t may concern:
. Be it knownthat I, CLARENCE E. AXLINE,
Sr., a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Bryant, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Latches; and
use the same. y
My invention relates to improvements in gates, being ydirected morev particularly, however, to an improvement in a lock or latch for a gate, being particularly fitted for so-c'alled farm gates.
vide a latch for agate that will automatically engage a keeper and positively secure the gate when closed, and in either of its open positions substantially kparallel to the drive-way or road which thelgate controls.
Another object is the provision of a simple latch mechanism that may be ,operated by the lifting of a bar or similar part by hand as in passing on foot through the gate-way or that may beoperated from a vehicle, the gate being maintained in either of its open positions even through strong winds may be prevailing. y
In order that my invention may be clearly understood I have provided the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof showing a preferredv arrangement of the gatelatch mechanism, it being understood that the invention is susceptible of various changes without departing from the spirit and intent thereof.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate showing my invention in connection therewith.
Fig. 2 is a plan of part of the gate and part only of the invention.
k3 upon said brackets, being well known structures, a sleeve or thimble 7 being pref- 1920. serial Nofseiysi.
i erably clamped in each loop to engage over the post 1 shown clearly in Fig. 1, theoppositeportion of the said keeper being inclined upwardly from each side at'110 for guiding the latch-bar upwardly yfromeither direction, a notch 11 receiving the bar into gate c losed. .y y y 12 indicates a pin which may extend through the said latch-bar constituting a it in ay customary mannernfoiholding the 'grasping-piece at either yside of Lthe gate. The main object of my invention isto pro.-
At 13 is a member constituting a latch jfor the gate in either of its open positions as Vwell as jointly with the latch-bar at the closed position. This'member is most clearly shown in Figs. 2 y3. It consists of a U- shaped part pivoted at its extremities tothe rearedge of the gate just aboveoneof the brackets 4.- and 5, preferablyl the latter, being adapted to rise and fall'. In its '.lower edge specification of Lettefsratent. Patented Augil., 19,2L
AppIication'led .Tune 25, i l A the extremities is an arm 17 to which is f loosely attached a rod 18 whose opposite end is loosely attached to end of a lever 19 pivoted between its ends on the gate 3, Fig. 1.
2O is a link connected at one end to the opposite end of the lever 19 and at its other end to the latch-bar 8.
In the positions shown in Fig. 1, in which the gate is closed, gravity holds the latch-bar 8 in the notch 11 of the keeper 9, gravity also holding the member 13 in engagement with the bracket 5 through the notch 15.
In closing the gate the latch is lifted to disengage the member 13 from the bracket 5; as to either '14, 16. As rthis is done, that part of the said member between the notches 14 and 15, or that lying between tlienotches 15 and 16 will ride upon the bracket holding the latch raised until the gate is opposite or nearly opposite the keeper 9, whereupon both the latch and member will descend to the locking position. l
The relation of the-described parts is such Vthat upon lifting the bar 8 and consequently the link 2O the lever 19 will be swung `on its pivot 'and the rod 18 pulled to lift the member from engagement with lthe bracket- 5.
- This permits the gate to be swung open in either direction, which, upon reaching apo sition substantially at right angles to its normal or closed position, will be held-by y Vby winds and must remain in the position to which it is swung until released by lifting the bar 8, by -grasping the arm 17, or by ,pulling upon the rod 18. Cf course, other means may be used in place of the bar 18, though this is found to answer as a simple form of `device to be grasped by the hand.
Any form or arrangement of operating mechanism may be attached to my latch structure described by which to operate the klatter' from a vehicle at either side of the gate, as maybe understood, but what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a gate, a supporting part on which Vit is hingedly mounted, a keeper Jfor the opposite end of the gate, and a latch to vengage it, of a member serrated `at its lower edge adapted to swing about said supporting part and adapted to engage the samefof la mechanism connecting the latch and said member adapted to operate the latter in the movement of said latch. y
Qa'llhe combination with a hinged gate and a latch therefor, and a member mounted pivotally uponthe gate having a series of notches adapted to engage a stationary portion on the support upon which the gate is hung adapted to secure the latter in any one of several positions, of mechanism pivotally mounted on the gate connected to or between the latch and said member adapted when the latch is raised to disengage the member.
3. l,The combination with a gate, a support to which the gate is hinged, a member pivotally mounted on the gate having a 'series of notches anyone of which is adapted to engage the support, and a latch for-the gate, of a lever arm pivoted between its end on the gate, a link connecting one end of the lever and the latch, and a rod connecting the other end of the lever with the member adapted when ythe latch vis raised to disengage the member from the support.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of'two witnesses.
