Description

S. STEVENS.
PARASOL. APPLICATION FILED AUG.23, 1920.
ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES SIDNEY STEVENS, OF MILLINOCKET, MAINE.
PARASOL.
Application filed August 23, 1920.
T 0 all 1071 om it may con cern Be it known that I, SIDNEY STnvnNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Millinocket, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Parasol, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for an object to provide a parasol with a swivel jointed stick and with provision whereby the covered rib structure may revolve by the force of the wind. Another object is to provide a revolving sunshade whose covering may be constructed with various bright and harmonizing colored segments which, as the structure revolves, will become a thing of beauty and gaiet-y to serve as a fashion novelty or as a play-thing for children and others.
Generally, the invention comprises a parasol of the usual construction, the stick of which is made, however, in sections united by a swivel joint and the top of the parasol is provided with segmental wings or vanes so arranged as to catch the wind or air currents and impart rotation to the structure.
More specifically, the invention also resides in providing the swivel oint at a place belowthe location of the usual sleeve catch which holds the parasol open, a latch being provided cooperative with the swivel joint to hold the swivel joint rigid or inactive when it is desired to do so.
In its more detailed nature, the invention furthermore resides in those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described, then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the parasol.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing one of the vanes.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section of the swivel.
Fig. 5 is a detail section showing the swivel lock device and its manner of operation..
In the drawing, in which like numerals and letters of reference designate like parts in all of the figures, 1 is the lower section of the stick or handle which is provided with a ferrule 2 having a ball race 3 at its end apertured to permit passage of the spindle 4: which is secured to the lower section 1 of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 16, 1921. Serial No. 405,357.
the stick by a. pin 5, or other suitable device. The spindle 4: has a head 6 under which the circle of contact 10 of the ferrule 8 engages, the ferrule 8 also having a ball race 11 cooperating with the ball race 3 and the bearing balls 12. The upper ferrule S is secured by a pin 9 on the end of the upper section 7 of the stick or handle, as indicated. In order that the swivel joint may be locked against action any suitable device may be employed such, for example, as that shown in detail in Fig. 5 by reference to which it. will be noticed that the spindle 4 has a recess 13 to receive the knob 14 of the spring catch member which is secured to the ferrule 8 and is adapted to be moved to its operative position by a cam device 15.
16 designates the usual rib structure of the parasol and 17 the usual struts which are hinged to the usual sleeve 18 and held in the spread position by the usual latch 19. 2O designates one of the vane segments, there being one segment for each rib. The vane segments 20 are secured along their edge 21 to the rib and along their edge 22 to the edge of the top covering while the edge 23 of the vane 20 is left uncovered save that it may be provided with a cord or elastic 24.- that is stretched from the center or axis of the parasol to the rib tip, as best shown in Fig. 2, thus forming. as it were, a pocket arrangement which, when the parasol is tilted to catch the wind, will impart a rotary movement to the same.
The top covering as well as the vanes 20, either or both, may be made of different colored material in segments so that as the structure revolves a harmonious pleasing color effect will be produced.
Fromthe foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is thought the complete construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
What I claim is:
1. In a parasol, av sectional stick with a swivel joint and a swivel joint lock device.
2. In a parasol, a sectional stick with a swivel joint and means to cause rotation of the top and rib structure.
3. In a parasol, a sectional stick with a swivel joint, a swivel joint lock device, and means by which the top and rib structure may be rotated when spread.
4. In a parasol, a sectional stick with a swivel joint, and vanes within the top to cause rotation of the same.
5. In a parasol, a sectional stick with a swivel joint, a swivel 101111; look device and vanes within the top to cause rotation of the same. a
6. In a p'arasol, a sectional stick with a swivel joint, a rib covering of variously colored segments and means to cause rotation of the same. a
7. In a parasol, a sectional stick with a swivel joint and a rib covering of. variously colored segments and a lining for the rib covering composed of air catchlng pocket forming segments to effect rotation of the 15 ture composedofvanes adapted to impart 20 rotation to the structure when presented to air currents.
