The preferred form of construction comprises a hollow conical shaped'papier-mach member 1, having a metallic reinforcement 2 surrounding the inner periphery of the smaller opening. Fixedly mounted in the larger end of said conica member is a clo sure member 3, said closure member having orifices 4t and 5, said orifices having straight parallel, sides and curved ends cut or stamped therein and a semi-circular bearing plate .6 mounted thereon. Fixedly mounted on the inner side of said closure member 3 is a circular papier-mach member 7, having circular orifices stamped or cut therein. said orifices being in alinement with the orifices of theclosure member 3. Fixed to the. face of the member 7 is a smaller circular papier-mach member 8, having circular orifices cut or stamped therein, said orifices being in alinement with the orifices in the members 3 and 7 and fixedly mounted on theinner sideof the member '8 is a circular flexible member 9, said flexible member 9 having orifices therein alined with the orifices in the member 8.

metallic disk 10, said disk having orifices therein, and said orifices being adapted to aline with the orifices heretofore mentioned when the disk is revolved to a certain position. The metallic disk 10 is held in position within the mute by means of a shaft 11 which passes through the axes of the members 3, 7, 8, 9 and 10, whereupon it is bent in a lateral. direction and fixed to the inner face of the member 10 so that. a rotation of the shaft 11 will cause the disk 10 to rotate. The opposite end of the shaft 11 isbent in a lateral direction forming an adjustment arm 12, said adjustment arm having its outer extremity bent to form a finger grip 13, the inner side of which is ads ptecl to frictionally engage the semi-circular bearing plate 6.
Mounted on the member 8 in the orifices are felt washers 14 and on the flexible washers are skin vibrators 15, said skin vibrators being clamped into position by means of perforated metallic closure members 16,
' said closure members being circular metallic disks having one straight side and having a portion bent in a lateral direction to form lugs 17. The circular portion of the closure members '16 is adapted to be inserted straight sides of the orifices in the member 3, alining the straight side of the closure with the opposite straight side of the orifices. The closure member is then pressed firmly the lugs 17, thus locking said closure member between the members 3 and 7.
Mounted on the exterior of the mute are cork wedge members 18, said cork wed e adapted to bear against the inner periphery of the horn and hold the mute firmly positioned therein.
The device is adapted to be placed in the born as heretofore mentioned and mutes prevlously desaid horn in a manner as scribed. When it is desired to increase the volumeof the horn and to produce the socalled jazz tones, the inner disk is revolved by means of the arms 12 until the alined orifices are more or less in alinement, the more in alinement they are the greater the volume of tone and vice versa.
While I have illustrated and described the construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my claim as new and desire ters Patent is 1. An article of the class described, comprising a hollow conical shaped member; a closure member mounted in one end of said conical shaped member orifices in said closure mcnil'ier; and means mounted thereon whereby the volume of the tone of the horn is varied, substantially as described.

An article of the class described, comprising a hollow fibrous conical shaped member inclosed at the larger end; orifices in said inclosed end; vibrators mounted in said orifices; a rotatable disk mounted on the inner face of said closure member; orifices in said disk adapted to aline with the orifices in the closure member upon rotation of said disk, substantially as described.

An article of the class described, comprising a hollow fibrous conical shaped member, closed at the larger end and open at the smaller end; reinforcing means mounted within the smaller open end; orifices in the closed end; vibrators mounted in said orifices; circular disks having orifices alined with the orifices within the closed end mounted on the interior face of said closed end; a leather washer mounted on the interior face of said disks; orifices in said asher alined with the orifices in said disks; a metallic disk rotatably mounted 011 the leather washer; orifices 1n said disk adapted to aline with the orifices in the washer and exterior disks upon rotation of the metallic disk, substantially as described.
