This invention relates to improvements in violin chin rests and the principal object of the invention is to turnsh a sanitary chin support having advantages over the ordinary chin rest now in general use.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved chin rest having a pad of soft porous material designed to support the chin in such manner as to prevent irritation, bruising or other injury to the flesh.
A still further object of the invention is to furnish a chin rest having a pad which may be readily removed from the main bracket.
With the foregoing objects outlined and with other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawing, 1 designates a clamp of known construction used in securing the z; of the chin rest to a violin V.
The chin rest includes a substantially elliptical-shaped plate 3 which is secured to he legs 2 and is provided with apertures 4; for a purpose hereinafter described.
5 designates the improved chin supporting pad which in the present instance consists of a thick rubber base 6 and a sponge rubber body 7. The base 6 is provided with a pocket 8 opening from one edge of the base and the plate 3 is designed to be inserted in this pocket for holding the pad in place. If desired screws may be passed through the base and through the apertures 4 of the plate 3 for locking the pad securely in position.
The body 7 is provided with a depression 9 des1gned to be engaged by the chin of the violinist. By constructing the body 7 of sponge rubber I provide a soft pad which fits snugly under the chin of the player and by reason of its porosity allows air to circulate under the operators chin and through the pad. The pad being made entirely of rubber may be washed or otherwise cleaned and thus it may be maintained in sanitary condition.
From the foregoing I believe the construction and advantages of my improved chin rest will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and I am aware that various changes and modifications may be made in the construction shown without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the claims.
What I claim and desire to tors-Patent is:
- 1. A violin chin rest including a supporting plate, a pad resting on said plate and having a base formed of thick resilient material provided with a pocket designed to engage said plate, and a soft porous body resting on said base.
2. A violin chin rest including a substantially elliptical pad having a base provided with a pocket opening from one edge of the same and designed to receive a supporting secure by Letelement, and a body secured to said base,
formed of sponge rubber and having a depression in its upper surface designed to receive the violinists chin.
3. A violin chin rest including a substantially elliptical apertured plate, a pad engaging said plate and provided with a base having a pocket in which said plate is inserted, and a body included in said pad and formed of sponge rubber.
Jr. A violin chin rest of the kind defined by claim 3 in which the plate is apertured to receive fastening means.
