SEWING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 9, 1921.
Application filed February a, 1819, Serial No. 274,902. Renewed June 1, 1921. Serial No. 474,297.
1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns ALEXANDER FLANAGAN, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York and Province of Ontario, Dominionof Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing- Machines; and I hereby declare that the following is a clear and exact description of the same.
This invention relates particularly to certain new and useful improvements in the feed and looper motions of a sewing machine; one of the objects of the invention being to centralize these motions, without disturbing the original action of the feed dog and looper, and thereby increase the scope of the machine and the variety of the workwhich it is capable of performing; a
- further object of the invention being to devise a support for work of a tubular or like character. and to so arrange the support, with relation to the other parts, that it will not interfere with the original purposes or uses of the machine.
The first of these objects may be attained by bringing the feed and looper shafts into co-axial relation and providing them with a specially designed motion for the vertical and lateral reciprocation of the feed dog; and the second of these objects may be attained by providing, the feed and looper motions with a specially constructed housing to partly or wholly inclose them without disturbing the original arrangement and use of the throat-plates and the provision for the usual sewing attachments, as hereinafter set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
For an understanding of the invention reference is .to be had to the following description and to the accompanying draw ings, in which Figure 1, is a horizontal longitudinal sectional plan showing -the feed and looper motions;
Fig. 2, is a vertical longitudinal section on the line a-a, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, is an elevational view of the feed dog and the feed cam imparting vertical reciprocating movement to the feed dog;
Fig. 4, is an end elevational view of the feed shaft and the rocker for imparting lateral reciprocating movement to the feed do 5. is an end elevational view of the housing for the feed and looper motions;
connected to, the frame; and I have also shown in the same figures the looper shaft 0 as extending axially through the feed shaft and projecting beyond the end thereof.
This arrangement brings the feed and looper shafts into co-axial relation and permits of the feed and looper motions being centralized with relation to each other and to the opening formed by the removal of the throat-plates z, 2'.
On the ends of the feed shaft (1 are caps d, d, constituting the bearings for the looper shaft 0. Fixed on the looper shaft, adjacent to the bearing d, is the feed cam e,impart ing a vertical reciprocating movement to the feed dog 7.
The feed dog 7 is provided with a feed bar f, which rides on the peripheral surface of cam c, this feed bar being of substantially the same width as the face of the cam and, secured to the side face of thefeed bar is an arm f.
This arm f extends along the corresponding side face of the cam e and is pro,
vided with a foot f entered in the internal cam 6 formed in the side face of the cam e, the contour of this internal cam corresponding with the peripheral surface of the cam e.
The cams e e revolve with the looper shaft 0 and, during their revolution, impart a vertical reciprocation to the feed dog Either the cam e or a may be omitted if desired, but it is preferable to use the cam construction shown and described, as the peripheral cam 6 provides a substantial support for the feed-bar and feed dog, and the internal cam e and the arm f and foot f provide a positive motion for the vertical reciprocation of the feed dog.
Projecting from the top of the cap at is a rocker arm cl having a radial slot 01 to receive the arm 7, the dimensions of this slot corresponding with the external dimensions of the arm, so that the latter will fit snugly therein.
At or near the rear end of the feed shaft a is the feed drive a, imparting a rocking movement to the feed shaft, during which the rocker arm causes the lateral reciprocation of the feed dog by means of the arrangement of the arm f and slotted rocker At the same end of the looper shaft 0 as the drive a is the looper drive 0, which imparts a rotary movement to the looper shaft and causes the rotation of the cams e, 6.
During theoperation of the drives a, 0', the feed shaft a is rocked in the bearings Z), to cause the movement of the rocker arm and the lateral reciprocation of the feed dog concurrently with the rotation of the looper shaft and the cams e, e, which effect the vertical reciprocation of the feed dog.
In closing the feed and shuttle shafts and their related parts, which for convenience may be termed the feed and looper motions, is a housing consisting of a tubular member h and a substantially spherical member It.
The top-of the spherical member it is flattened and provided with a feed plate It suitably slotted for the feed dog 7", and the front of the spherical member h is provided with a hinged gate it for access to the looper.
The purpose of the housing h, It, is twofold, first. to inclose the feed and looper motions, and second, to provide a support for work of a tubular or like character, the latter of which is the more important, as it permits of the machine being used for darning and other purposes, such, for instance, as the sewing of sleeves, trouser legs, etc., when the garment has been put together.
To permit of this use of the machine, the frame is provided with throatplates i, i, of relatively considerable dimensions, vertically above the housing h, h, which plates, when removed from the frame, permit of free access to the housing as a work support.
When these throat-plates are removed, work, such, for instance, as a sock, or a sleeve, or a trouser leg, all of tubular character, may be drawn over the spherical member 71, of the housing and in the direction of the bearing 6 until the spot where the sewing is to be done comes into alinement with the needle bar of the machine.
This centralization of the feed and looper motions and the co-axial relation of the feed and looper shafts permits of a housing of this type being used and allows of the machine being employed for work of this character without interfering with its use or purpose or purposes for which it was ordinarily designed, and without interfering with any of the attachments which it may be necessary to use in connection therewith.
Various changes in the structural details of the parts described may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the principle of the invention, which is to centralize the feed and looper motions and to provide them with a housing which may be used as a support for work a tubular character.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
