To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs'MAYEn, a citizen'of the United States, and resident of Kaukauna, in the county of Outagamie and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to power hammers and more specifically to the novel construction of parts comprising the ZLIIVIl It is primarily an object of my invention to providev an arrangement whereby the working or cutting surface of the anvil may be renewed upon wear.
A more specific object is the provision in an anvil of a detachable cutting die having a plurality of working surfaces adapted to be exposed in turn to the work. 1
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more particularly described and defined by the appended claims.

Referring now more accompanying drawing, anvil of the hammer, and reciprocative above this is the hammer head or ram 6. Mounted at the upper portion of the body structure 7 is a crank wheel 8 on which is eccentrically mounted a pin 9 carrying a pitman link 10 on which is secured the sleeve 11, from which pivotally depends a pair of yoke arms 12 resiliently urged apart by the spring 13 disposed between their intermediate portions. The lower ends of the yoke arms 12 are connected to the ram 6 by means of links 16, all of which structure is of a conventional nature and causes the ram to be reciprocated.

Secured to the body member by means of a bolt 19 is a retaining plate 20 which forms a closure wall for the open end of the recess 17. The rectangular cutting die has its surfaces provided with centrally disposed tapered recesses 18 adapted to receive the tapered pins 21 carried by the body member and retaining plate. As best shown in Fig. 3, it will be noted that the tapered pins 21 are slightly ofi'-centered with reference to the recesses 18' of the cutting die, thereby causing the die to be wedged and rigidly secured within the recess 17 of the body member.
Inasmuch as this invention is specifically designed for the purpose of shaping, drawing and forming various kinds of tools, such as cold chisels, drills and the like, it will be noted as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing Vided. It will be readily understood that were the cutting die formed as an integral art of the anvil, the same would soon become dulled from the work, thereby rendering the entire member useless, and were a die with a single cutting edge provided, the
same would require frequent sharpening. For this reason it has been found preferable to use the rectangular cutting die 18 which, due to its shape, is provided with twelve cutting edges 18", any one of which may be exposed to the work by merely shifting the position of the die within the recess of the body member.
As best shown in Fig. 3, the body member 17 is provided with a tool supporting surface 17 adjacent the cutting die and flush with one surface of the same to form a support for a tool as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
While I have shown and described my invention in connection with an anvil of a power hammer, it will be readily understood that the same may be used in analogous machines, and may further be used in connection with a reciprocating member or ram, without departing from the invention.
