HAND-CASE FOR LADIES.
Application filed January 22, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSGAR DINernLn, a citizen of the United States, residinp at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Hand-Case for Ladies, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention relates to improvements in hand cases for ladies, which are now commonly made of a frame and cover plates soldered together, and my improvement consists mainly in obviating the necessity of soldering by the construction of the hand case hereinafter more fully described, and it also contains other novel features hereinafter more fully described.
The objects of my improvement are:
First: To make a hand case for ladies, in which each frame or basil is connected to the corresponding cover plate by a mechanical joint without soldering.
Second: To enable dissimilar materials to be used for the frame and for the cover plate, whereby, while the frame is made of amaterial strong enough to stand the strain of repeated opening and closing of the case, the cover plate may be made of a material which will permit ornamentation by delicate engraving, lacquering or enameling.
Third: To make provision for strengthening the basil or frame in the vicinity of the hinge to prevent bending or undue straining of the hinge and the part of the frame adjacent thereto; and
Fourth: To have said hand case simple, durable and inexpensive.
I attain these objects by the hand case illustrated in the accompanying drawings or by any mechanical equivalent or obvious modification of the same.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a section of my hand case on the lines A. CB of Fig. 2, but omitting the lock or latch and sundry appurtenances of the case; Fig. 2 is a plan of the lower half of the hand case; Figs. 8 and 1 are detail views on a larger scale of the left end and right end respectively of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
11 designates the annular basil or frame of the upper half of my hand case, which is shown as hrving its outer rim 12 curled over the edge of the cover plate 15 13, 1&1

and 16 are respectively the frame, the outer rim thereof and the cover plate of the lower half of my hand case.
The frames 11 and 13 may be made preferably of some metal, such as b ass or steel, which is strong enough to stand the strain of repeatedly opening and closing the hand case; but the cover plates 15 and 16 may be made preferably of some material such as aluminum, copper or celluloid, which is soft enough to permit delicate ornamentation by engraving, lacquering or enameling, or partly by one and partly by any other of the above processes. in 1 Aluminum is particularly fit for this purpose, because it permits a superior engravmg which stays white; but I do not restrict myself to any one metal or material, as sundry materials may be employed, as long as they are rigid enough to be self sustaining against being collapsed by the handling of the hand case. Y
The cover plate may also be made of some soft material which is not self sustaining and a metal support provided therefor.
Its the basil or frame of my hand case is a different material fromthat of the cover ate, soldering is not feasible for joining he two together; I, therefore, propose to iave the two connected by a mechanical joint. such as is obtained by curling the outer rim of pi of the basil or frame ll'or 12 over the edge of the cover plate 15 or 16.
The above joint is made extra neat and practically undiscernible by providing each of the cover plates 15 and 16 with the shoulders 20 and 21, against which the edges of the rims 12 and 1 1- are nearly abutting, thereby making the appearance of continuity of the metal of the rims 12 and 14 with that of the cover plates 15 and 16.
vftnother feature of my hand case is the stiffening rib 17 in the basil or frame 11, with the corresponding rib 18 in the frame 13, both in the vicinity of the hinge 19; each rib is made in one with its basil or frame and extends through a part of the inner edge thereof, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, thereby strengthening the frame near the hinge 19, andthereby preventing the bending or undue straining of the latter.
22 is a pair of ears for a chain to be connected to the hand case.
Many changes could in vlJt itdein the detalls V of my hand case Without departing from the main scope of my invention. I v
I do not, therefore, restrict myself to the details of my hand'oase as shown in the jvlous modifications of the same Within the scope of my'invention.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: r
1. In a hand case the combination of basil or frame and a cover plate of dissimilar materials, connected to each other by means of a mechanical joint, said basil being of material strong enough to stand the repeated strain of opening and closing the Y case, and the material of the cover plateibeing adapted to permit delicateornamentation thereon.
one of said basilswin the vicinity of said hinge, thereby strengthening the basil adacent to sald hinge and thereby prevent ng 25 the bending or undue straining ot, the hinge. 3. in a hand case the combination of a cover plate 01" self sustaining material and Ya basil or frame substantially encompasslng the same, said cover plate and said frame being); of dissimilarmaterials and connected to each otherby means of a mechanical j oint.
