WINDOW-LOCK.
Application filed November 19, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVoJoInor-r ZYoH, a citizen of Poland, and a resident of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved VVindow-Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to looks, and more particularly to window looks. The present invention specifically relates to a burglar-proof window catch.
The object of the invention is to provide a window catch or lock having positive looking means such that it is impossible to press the window catch open by inserting a jimmying tool or wedge tool through the narrow space usually left between the meeting rails of the window sash when the windows are closed. It is a further object to provide novel locking means used in connection with the catch for effecting the aforesaid purpose.
It is a further purpose to produce a win dow lock or catch simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be unlikely to get out of working order.
With the above principal objects in view, the invention has relation to the particular design of window lock and locking means as set forth in the following specification, defined in the appended claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 shows a plan view of the window lock in locked position, and Fig. 2 shows the same view but with the catch unlocked. Fig. 3 shows a cross sectional view taken through the meeting rails of a window sash with the window catch applied thereto, and with the locking parts in engaged position.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein similar parts are illustrated by identical reference characters, the numerals 5 and 5 designate a pair of plates provided with suitable countersunk holes through which screws are introduced to fasten the plates to the adjacent sills of a window. The plates are provided with upstanding studs 6 and 6. The stud 6 is grooved to leave a head 7 and the stud 6 is constructed somewhat shorter than the grooved stud.
Specification of Letters Patent.
'9 and a collar on the plunger.
Patented Au 9, 1921.
Serial No. 339,191.
The reduced neck 8 of the stud 6 forms a keeper adapted to be engaged by a catch. The upstanding stud 6 carries a locking catch 9 pivoted on a pin 10. The locking catch 9 is provided on one end thereof with a fork 12 adapted to engage the neck 8 and becomes locked in connection with the reduced neck 8 under the head 7. The upper face of the fork 12 is beveled to form an angular surface 14. This surface 14: enables the fork 12 to more effectively engage the neck 8 and also functions to draw the window into proper position in order to aline the two meeting rails of a window sash. A bore is made in the locking catch 9 and a spring pressed locking plunger 15 slidably retained in the bore. The plunger is provided with a head 16 and a spring 17. The spring -acts to normally hold the locking plunger downwardly in engagement with the upper surface of the plate 5', due to being under compression between the catch The plate 5 is provided with a hole 18 into which the lower end of the locking plunger enters when the locking catch is rotated to engage the reduced neck 8 0f the plate on the adj acent window rail. The spring 1'? acts to forcibly engage the locking plunger 15 with the hole 18 and thus prevent movement of the locking catch 9 due to any cause whatsoever other than by lifting the locking plunger 15 from out of the hole 18. The locking catch 9 is provided with a suitably shaped handle or thumb piece 19 on the inner end thereof.
The device is simple to install, effective in its locking function, and may not be manipulated or jimmied by burglar tools or otherwise displaced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
r A window lock catch comprising a pair of plates adapted to be secured to the meeting rails of the upper and lower window sash, a stud integrally made on each plate, a reduced neck on one of said studs, a locking catchpivoted on the other shorter stud, one of said plates having a hole in alinement with said shorter stud, a fork formed on one end of the locking catch, said end being provided with a beveled angular face adapted catch, a head on said plunger, a spring for normally holding said plunger downwardly with its end engaging the holein one of said plates when the locking catch engages said reduced neck, and allowing the withdrawal of said plunger end from said hole when the 10 locking catch is disengaged'from said reduced neck and turned about its pivot.
