w/mfssfs 5 Y the purpose stated maintiennent To @il whom may concerne.'
Be it known that WILLIAM NELSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wolcott, in the county oi" X5Vayne and State ciE New York, have invented a new and improved Kicking-Boot, which the followln 'is a full, clear, exact description.
this invention relates to improvements in kicking boots, and more particularly tc a device which can readily secured' to the hind iegof a cow and prevent kicking.
further Vobject is to provide a boot for, which comprises a splint cr shieid extending across the joint and at the .front of the rear ieg of cow and provided with improved er angement of straps which are passed around the rear of the leg above and below the joint and secured to efectuaiiy maintain the shield 0r splint in position to prevent the use of the le for kicking.
ith these other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parte, as wiii be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
in the aeconipenyi" iirawings- Figure is viev eievation illustrating my 'improved bool. position en the leg Fig. 2 is an eniarger view in iront elevan ltion or the removed, parte being-broken away for clearness. c
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevatione Fig. 2.
Fig. iis a view in transverse section on the line of Fig. 2.
My improved boot comprisesa semicylindrical splint or shield i jghch is preferably of metal and of a suitabedength to extend an appreciable distanceebove and b elow'the jointo the leg 2 ci a cow 3. This shield or splint l is preferably iared slightly at its ends as shown at e, to prevent cutting the flesh of the cow, and to the front anc= intermediate portion of the shield a buckle 5 is secured. This buckle is connected to the shield by means of a bracket 6 which gives pivotai mounting to the center pin 7 or' the buckle and a toothed tongue 8 is provided on the buckle for a purpose which wiil hereu ina-iter appear.
A pair of bindingx i? and l0 are se= 5 cured at one end to a tr piaf..

il and the latter secured to one end ot the buckle 5 as shown at l2. The straps 9 and l0 are secured to the triangular plate ll adjacent its edges so that they are angularly disposed relative to each other and can be conveniently passed around the rear of the sleg of the cow above and below the joint TES. The other ends of the straps 9 and l0 are secured to a second triangular metal plate le and converge or are integral and are made with a securing strip 15 which is adapted to be positioned through the buckle and secured at any point of adjustment by means of the toothed tongue 8.
It will thus be noted that in order to posi- 'tion the boot around the leg of the cow, it is simply necessary to detach the strip l5 from the buckle 5 when the straps 9 and l0 may be positioned around the rear of the leg of the cow and above and below the joint i3 respectively, andy when the tongue 8 is passed through the buckle 5 and secured thereby, the shield or splint i will be securely held across the front of the joint of the leg of the cow and prevent bending of the leg so that the cow cannot kick.
This device is especially adapted for use while milking and may be used on either hind leg of the cow as may be desired.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but con- Sider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim: v
A boot of the character described, comprising a transversely curved shield or splint adapted to be positioned across the front oi the joint of the hind leg of a cow, means for securing said shield around the leg, said means comprising a pair of triangular metal plates, one or" which is secured directly to the shield, a pair of straps secured to said plates and spaced apart between 'their ends, and a buckle supported on the shield and operatively and adjustably connected to one of said plates, whereby the adjusting means for the shield is against the shield and not against the leg of the animal on 'which the shield is used.
WILLIAM NELSON.
