TUBULAR SHIPS HULL.
Application filed August 28, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GIUsErrE VITULLI h loN'rAnUL-r, a subject of the King of Italy, and residing at 9' Piazzale Flaminia, Rome, Italy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tubular Ships Hulls, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to tubular ships hulls and more particularly to hulls of that type which comprise amidships transverse frames in the shape of a continuous curve of, for example, circular, elliptical or oval section, or in the shape of a curve interrupted at points by straight lines connecting with the curved parts, and forward and after frames which are of rectilinear section laterally and curved above and below.'
As hitherto proposed, the outer plating surrounded the hull along its whole circumference. Now according to the present invention the outer plating is replaced on the top part of the hull by a deck structure with extensions projecting from the hull and secured thereto by means of angle frames or of longitudinal stringers with interposed angle frames.
The invention will be described by way of example, as applied to a ships hull having amid ships an elliptical cross section with interposed straight lines above and below, this hull being shown in amidships section in the annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the hull is built up of frames 1 having the shape of flattened rings and these frames may or may not be interconnected by longitudinal stringers 2.
The hull is covered with plates 3 which however do not surround its whole circumferonce but they end short of the point where the elliptical curve assumes the shape of a Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 26, 1921,

straight line atop the hull. In this part of the hull the plating is replaced by a deck structure with extensions 4 and 5 projecting from the hull, and by bulwarks 6 and 7 respectively. The extensions .land 5 are secured to the curved part of the hull, for example, by aid of angle frames 8 as shown on the left hand side of the figure, or by longitudinal stringers 9 with interposed angle frames as shown on the right hand side of the figure. The deck structure may be provided with longitudinal hatchway stringers 10 and with ordinary deck stringers 11.
What I claim is:
A ships hull having a plurality of circular transverse frames, a number of said frames being formed. with a flattened portion at the top, the remaining frames terminating adjacent the flat portion on either side thereof, hatchway stringers mounted on the ends of said remaining frames to form a passage therebetween, plates for securing said string.- ers to the frame, angle brackets secured to the curved portion of the frames adjacent the plates adapted to form a horizontal decksupporting portion at either side of the hatchway and plating for covering the angle brackets and curved portions of the hull from points adjacent the angle brackets, whereby the angle brackets are adapted to form a deck-supporting structure adjacent the hatchway.
