N ow according to the present invention the screens used are formed of colored openmesh material adapted to give simultaneously almost infinite variations of color and (or) markings as of watered silk, the combination giving the whole a somewhat iridesceiit effect. The screens may also preierably be arranged around vertical rollers enabling a signto be provided having two or more illuminated sides.
In carrying the invention into practical eiiect the device may conveniently comprise a box or casing having one or more sides uniormly illuminated.
The sides of the box not illuminated are preferably painted dead black or coated with any suitable non-reflecting material. The characters forming the sign are suitably either stenciled in metal or other suitable material or left transparent on an opaque background or made opaque on a transparent background. l/Vhen more than one side is to be illuminated, between the source or sources of light and the illuminated sides of the box or case conveniently two thicknesses of colored open-square-mesh material may be caused to move laterally in parallel planes l in two concentric endless bands moving parallel to the illuminated sides at slightly diftering rates of speed, by means of rollers or spindles. Between the opposite illuminated double thicknesses of open-squaremesh material is a dividing wall or partition painted black, or coated with any suitable non-reflecting material. When one side only7 is to be. illuminated, between the source or sources of light and the illuminated side of the box or case conveniently two thicknesses of colored open-square-mesh material may be caused to move laterally in parallel planes in one endless band moving parallel to the illuminated side by means of rollers or spindies. The inner side of the `endless band may be brought into the necessary adjustment with the o or guides.

As shown the improved sign comprises sides b stenciled or painted to leave the characters bof the sign transparent on an opaque ground or opaque on a transparent ground.

In a sign having more than one side illuminated as in Figs. 1 to 3, on four vertically arranged outer rollers or spindles e would be mounted an endless band al of suitably colored open-square-mesh material, such as silk, voile, organdy, leno, muslin, or gauze. On four inner rollers or spindles f would be mounted a second endless band cl of the same material, and having the same size mesh.
