Description
J. D. RICHEY.
SAFETY OIL C'AN.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT- a. 1920.
Patented July 26, 1921.
INVENTOR James David Rl hgy,
WITNESSES ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES JAMES DAVID RICHEY, OF CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS.
SAFETY OIL-CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 26*, 1921.
Application filed September 8, 1920. Serial No. 409,013.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES DAVID RIoHEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Corpus Christi, in the county of Nueces and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Oil-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in safety oil cans, and has for its object to provide in an oil can, mechanism for securely closing the spout, to prevent waste and evaporation, the said means being in the form of a cup or container, holding a definite amount of oil, as for instance enough to kindle a fire. A
In the drawings Figure l is a front view of the improved can.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the cup.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cup detached.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown in connection with an oil can l of usual construction, having the bail 2, the nipple 3, and the spout 4 for the discharge of oil, kerosene and the like.
This spout has its extremity threaded as shown at 5 in Fig. 2, for engagement by a closure in the form of an internally threaded cap 6 which is adapted to engage the nipple.
A cup 7 is provided, the said cup being adapted to contain a definite amount of oil,
as for instance a gill, and this cup is secured to the cap 6, by means of a rivet 8 or the like. The cap 6 is secured to the inner face of the bottom of the cup at the center thereof, and the said cap is coaxial with the cup in use.
When the can is in use, the cap 6 is screwed into place on the nozzle or spout, and provides a closure which will prevent losses by splashing, overturning or evaporation. The cup is adapted to contain a definite amount ofoil, as for instance enough to kindle a fire.
It will be observed that the container 7 is of a diameter approximately three times the diameter of the spout so that the spout may be freely received within and protected by the container. Also the container 7 is of a length sufficient to provide a secure gripping means for use when it is desired to apply or remove the cap 6.
I claim:
The combination with a receptacle having a discharge spout, of a frusto-conical one piece liquid container of a diameter approximately three times the diameter of the spout whereby the major portion of the spout is freely received within and protected by said container, and a cap threaded on said spout and having a top rigidly secured within the container to the bottom wall of the same, said container being exteriorly smooth and of a length to permit the same to be securely gripped when applying or removing said cap.
JAMES DAVID RIoHEY.
