DOUBLE POURINGASPOUT Filed Dec. 10, 1956 awe/whom Patented Mar. 8 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT Application December 10, 1936, Serial No. 115,094
3 Claims.
This invention pertains to closure means for pouring spouts. More particularly said invention has to do with a spout having a large and 'a small outlet for the contents to be poured from a receptacle. r
The object of the invention is to provide for positively fixing in place upon a. main spout one of two parts of a double outlet arrangement so that the other part may be loosened and removed without loosening or disturbing the first named part.
Another object lies in including with the larger of two threaded removable parts of the spout means for use in positively turning such part into frictional engagement with the threads of a main or permanently attached main spout whereby the other or smaller outlet portion may be removed without disturbing the said larger part.
In order that our invention may be fully understood we have provided the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application.
Figure 1 shows in perspective a form of double outlet spout involving the invention in one of the forms that may be used.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of part of what is illustrated in Figure l, and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of the spout portions produced on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
It is to be understood that a double outlet spout of the nature illustrated has no novelty herein as such, the invention lying in the inclusion with removable spout portions means by which one portion may be positively fixed in position, when desired, so that it cannot be disturbed when operating the other of the portions.
In said drawing l denotes any type of container for a liquid and fixed to which in any usual manner is a inain spout 2 whose free extremity is screwthreaded at 3 in the usual way.
Arranged so as to be screwed upon the said main spout 2 is a threaded portion or cap preferably reduced in diameter and providing a wall 5 to overlie the threaded end 3-and to enclose a gasket 6 between itself and said end 3, said gasket having, of course, an opening 1 through which to pour the commodity of such container. The reduced part of said portion or cap 4, as our invention, is formed to receive a wrench so that it may be otherwise turned, and in the present instance this takes the form of a faceted integral extension 8 for receiving a wrench. This extension terminates in a wall portion 9 which, again in this instance, has an outwardly turned flange l0 defining the outlet opening II, and SQQ Lred, to
the flange as by soldering, for example, is a threaded thimble 'or neck l2 to receive a cap it completing the structure. While this method of fixi'ngthe 'neck l2 at the wall 9 as a part separate therefrom is employed it may, perhaps, be made integral with said wall. I v v 7 When the cap 4 is removed from the spout 2 the latter will pour a full stream from the container l. Due to the provision of the extension of said cap with the smaller opening i I the liquid handled may be greatly reduced in fiow. As heretofore constructed the caps 4 and i3 have been screwed into position by hand on their respective threaded receiving portions and naturally said cap Hi can be tightened by hand much more easily and effectively than can the larger cap 4. Because of this fact such friction is created between the cap 93 and the neck i2 that in attempting to remove said cap the whole affair turns and is loosened on the threads 3 of the spout 2 requiring that the cap 4 be grasped and held while the smaller cap 53 is turned to remove it. Because of this the extension 8 of the cap t is provided in such form that a turning force may be applied thereto for setting up said cap to the end that there will be greater friction between its threads and those of the spout than can normally exist at the threads of the cap l3 and thus the latter may always be turned and removed without disturbing the larger one.
It is not our purpose to confine ourselves to any particular form of the extension 8 so long as it serves the purpose intended whether an integral part of the cap 4, or secured to the same.
We claim:-
1. An article of manufacture comprising a combined closure and reducing spout for a container having a first portion adjacent one end of larger diameter than the other end portion and provided with means for securement to a container, a second portion of reduced diameter as compared to said first portion and faceted to provide for the use of tools thereon, and a third portion of reduced diameter as compared to said second portion and provided with a bore of reduced size as compared to the interior dimension of said first portion, and said third portion being provided with securing means for fastening a closure element to said third portion, the overall dimension of said third portion and the securing r means thereof being of less diameter than the distance between opposing facets of said second portion so that tools may be used on said second portion without engaging the fastening means of said third portion.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a combined closure and reducing spout for a container having a first portion adjacent one end of larger diameter than the other end portion and provided with means for securement to a container, a second portion extending as a continuation of said first portion for the reception of tools thereon, a flange extending centrally Within said device from the Wall of said first portion and against which a gasket may rest, and a third portion extending as a continuation of said second portion and of reduced diameter as compared to said second portion, and provided with a bore reduced as compared to the interior dimension of said first portion, said third portion being provided with securing means for fastening a closure element thereto, the overall diameter of said third portion and the securing means thereof being of less diameter than the shortest diametrical distance on said second portion, so that tools may be used compressively on said second portion to clamp and turn the same without touching said third portion.
3. An article of manufacture comprising a combined closure and reducing spout for a container having a first portion adjacent one end of larger diameter than the other end portion and provided with means for securement to a container, a second portion faceted to provide for the use of tools thereon, and a third portion of reduced diameter as compared to said second portion and provided with a bore of reduced size as compared to the interior dimension of said first portion, and said third portion being provided with securing means for fastening a closure element to said third portion, the overall diameter of said third portion and the securing means thereof being of less diameter than the distance between opposing facets of said second portion so that tools may be used on said second portion Without engaging the fastening means of said third portion.
