To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EnwiN OZ KLnMM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop Mechanism for Talking-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in sound reproducing or talking machines commercially known as graphophones or phonographs, and in particular to automatic braking mechanism therefor, operable at a predetermined time during the travel of. the reproducer or .recorderin such manner as to stop the rotation of the usual record support. The sound reproducing. machine which is with a forwardly projecting'supportingarm 6 secured in any desired manner as 'most clearly-shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the draw ing. The arm 6 obviously rotateswith the reproducer arm as the reproducer is moved by the sound groove of the sound record 7 carried by the'rotatable support 2 hereinbefore referred to.
The braking mechanism which constitutes the subject matter of this invention consists of the support or bracket 8 which is fixed to the surface of the casing 1 adjacent to the rotatable record support 2 by screws or similar fastening members 9. It will be obvious that rotation of the brake one direction will cause sai brakemember to be shifted longitudinally toward the rotatable support 2 and when rotated in the other direction away from said support releasing the brake by this last mentioned operation. At the endopposite the brake shoe 11, said brake member is apertured to receive the actuating brake arm 14 and against this arm frictionally held by means of a spring 16 interposed between said washer and the sup-. port 8.. The spring is of sufficient strength to normally hold the arm 14 at adjusted positions which maybe secured automatically at hereinafter JflGSCllllBCl and also exernses sufficient pressure against this arm to prevent movement thereof except when manually actuated to obtain the preliminary adjustment above referred to. .As will be noted more particularly by reference to Fig l, the arm 14 at one end has connected thereto a blade 17 fixed by meansof the connecting members-or rivets 1S and the lower edge thereof is provided with a notch or recess 19 which is adapted to receive the supporting arm 6 carried by the reproducer arm 4:.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to beconfined to the particular. formation of the end portion of the arm 14 above described as this may without departing in any way. from the function which is performed by this element,it being, however, desirable that'that end of the arm hould be of sufficient weight to cause a tendency of the arm to gravitate and in so doing actuate the brake member 10' rotatably upon its support.
Describing the operation of this brakemechanism which, it will be obvious, is extrcmcly simple in construction a preliminary adjustment is first obtained which determines the point of application of the brake to the rotatable support 2 by the operator. Assuming, for instance, that the brake is to bcapplied to stop the turntable 2 when the end of the sound groove is reached the reproducer arm with its supporting arm 6 engaged in the notch 19 of the actuating arm 14 is moved inwardly until the stylus .of the reproducer rests substantially at the end portion of the sound groove of the record, thus carrying the arm 14; longitudinally therewith. This represents the preliminary adjustment above referred to and the brake will be operated at this point in the subsequent travel of the repro-v ducer arm in the playing of the record. In a device of the class described, the combination with a rotatable member and a traveling member movable relative thereto, of brake mechanism comprising a brake member and operating means therefor cooperative with the traveling member to hold the brake in inoperative position, said means combination with a rotatable member and a traveling member movable relative there to, of brake mechanism comprising a brake member, a support in which said brake member is rotatably mounted, an arm connected to the brake member forrotating the same, means for'shifting the brake member longitudinally upon rotation thereofasaid. arm being manually operable for releasing the brake member, and means coacting with the armto hold the brake member in such release position until the traveling member has reached a predetermined point in its travel.
