Specification of Letters Patent.
STOP DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER l/VEBER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop Devices, of which the following is a description.
This application is a continuation of my former application Serial No. 66 1,3293, filed December 7 1911, entitled Phonographs, as to all subject matter which is common to the two.
My invention relates to stop devices and more particularly to an improved stop de vice for phonographs.
The object of my invention is to provide means, simple and efficient in operation, for stopping a machine having mechanisms, between which there is a relative feeding movement, at any desired point in such movement, the embodiment of my invention hereinafter described being especially designed for automatically effecting the arresting of the motor of a phonograph at any desired point in the relative feeding movement between the sound box and record support.
Other objects of my invention reside in the construction of parts and combinations of elements hereinafter described and more particularly set forth in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be more clearly understood, attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a phonograph embodying my invention, the cabinet for the motor being omitted and a part being shown in section; Fig. 2 represents a plan view thereof partly broken away; and Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of a detail of construction .taken on .line 33 of Fig. 1.
In all of the views like parts are desig nated by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, reference char-- acter 1 represents the bed plate of a phonograph on which the sound box 2 is fixedly supported, as by a bracket 3. The means for supporting the record 4 comprises a mandrel 5 and a carriage 6 on which the mandrel is mounted by means of a hollow shaft 7. The carriage 6 is adapted to travel back and forth on a rod 8 and slideway 9 secured to the bed plate, and to carry with it the mandrel 5. suitable means (not shown), controlled by lever 10, adapted to coact with the rotatable feed screw 11 to impart travel to the carriage and mandrel 5 so as to move the latter past the sound box 2. Rotary movement is imparted to the mandrel 5 and its shaft 7 by means of a rotatable shaft 12, one end of the latter being supported by bracket 13, secured to the bed plate 1, and the other end being supported within. the hollow shaft 7 of mandrel 5. Between the last named end of shaft 12 and the interior of the hollow shaft 7 is a slidable but nonrotatable connection (not shown); so that rotation may be imparted to shaft 7 from shaft 12, while at the same time shaft 7 may be moved lengthwise along shaft 12 during the travel of carriage 6 and mandrel 5. Rotation is imparted to shaft 12 and feed screw 11 by suitable gearing 14 actuated by a motor 15. Motor 15 is suitably suspended from the bed plate 1 as by brackets 16. A governor 17 of the usual type is suitably driven from shaft 12 as by spiral gearing 18, and is provided with the usual friction disk 19. In order to provide for a slight regulation of the speed of the shaft 12, I provide a pivoted arm 20 carrying a plurality of friction pads adapted to engage more or less firmly the face of the disk 19, and manually operable means 21 for adjusting the position of the pivoted support 20 so as to provide the desired clegree of friction between the disk 19 and the friction pads of the arm 20.
The carriage 6 carries Numeral 27 represents a lever pivoted to the under side of the bed plate at 28 and having a slot and pin connection 29 at one end with the arm 26. A spring 30 connected to the bed plate and lever 27 constantly tends to move the parts of the brake mechanism to a position in which the friction pad 23 will engage with friction disk 19 to stop the machine. To the other end of the lever 27 at 31 is pivotally connected a link 32, the other end of the link being pivotally connected at 33 to one arm 34 of a bell crank lever. The bell crank lever is pivoted at 35 on a lug 36 depending from the bed plate and its other arm 37 extends upwardly through an aperture 38 in the bed plate.
The link mechanism consisting of the link 32 and bell crank lever constitutes a toggle joint, the pivotal connections of the link with the bell crank at 33 and the lever 27 at 31 being so located, that when the arm 37 is moved in the aperture 38 near or to the extreme right hand position, as shown in Fig. 1, the toggle joint will be in sub stantially dead center position, that is, the axis of link 32 will extend through the center of pivot 35 or slightly above the same, and the spring 30, instead of moving the parts to their positions for stopping the motor, will act to maintain the toggle oint in dead center position and consequently hold the brake mechanism in a position with th'e friction pad 23 out of engagement with the friction disk 19, as shown in Fig. 2, and allow the machine to operate. To stop the machine, it is merely necessary to throw the toggle joint out of dead center position or to a position in which the axis of link 32 will extend below the center of pivot 35 and thereby release the spring pressed lever 27 and allow the spring 30 to act on lever 27 and thereby on parts 26, 24 and 22 to move the friction pad into contact with friction disk 19 of the governor. This may be accomplished manually, as explained in my application previously referred to, but I preferably employ means, comprising a member 39 adjustably connec'te'd to the record supporting means for automatically accomplishing this result, so as to stop the machine at any desired point in the relative feeding movement of the mandrel and sound box. The member 39 has a dove-tail portion 40 which is slidably mounted in a dove-tail recess 41 in the car riage 6. Any suitable means,'such as a bolt 42 having a screw threaded connection with member 39 and adapted to cooperate with the bottom of the recess 41, as shown in Fig. 3,.is provided for locking member 39 in any desired position on carriage 6. One end of the member 39 is provided with a projection 43 adapted to engage the arm 37 of the bell crank lever and throw the link mechanism out of the substantial dead center position, and the other end thereof is provided with an extension 41% having an index 45.
The arrangement of the parts is such that in any position in which member 39 is locked to the carriage 6, index 45 will indicate the place on the record and mandrel, with Which the stylus of the sound box will register when the machine is automatically stopped as above set forth.
It is to be understood, of course, that my invention is applicable to machines other than phonographs and to phonographs in which the sound box is movable uUl'OSS the record support, as well as the above described type in which the mandrel or record support is axially movable under the sound box. It is also to be understood that many other modifications and equivalents may be employed within the scope of my invention and of the appended claims.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is as follows 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pivoted brake-apply ing device, a spring pressed lever having a sliding connection with said device, the spring constantly exerting a force tending to move said device about its pivot to apply the brake, and link mechanism comprising a lever and a link pivotally connected at its opposite ends respectively to said levers, said link mechanism being adapted, when in substantially dead center position, to hold said spring pressed lever and thereby the brake applying device in inoperative position and when moved out of such position to release said spring-pressed lever, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plurality of rela tively movable devices, and driving means for causing relative movement thereof, of brake mechanism comprising means con stantly tending to apply the brake for arresting said driving means, and mechanism cooperating with the brake mechanism comprising a toggle joint and adapted to be set in a given position and to lock the brake mechanism in inoperative position, whenever in such position one of the relatively movable devices being adapted to automatically move said toggle joint out of such position to release the brake mechanism, when said devices reach predetermined relative po sitions, substantially as described.
3, In a device of the character described, the combination with a traveling element, and driving means therefor, of brake mechanism comprising means normally tending to apply the brake to arrest said driving means, link mechanism cooperating with said brake mechanism and adapted to be set in substantially dead center position and to hold the brake mechanism inoperative, Whenever in such position, and means, adjustably connected to said traveling element, adapted to engage said link mechanism and automatically throw the same out of such position, whereby the driving means may be arrested at any predetermined point in the travel of said traveling element, substantially as described.
4:. In a device of the character described,'
the combination with a traveling element and driving means therefor, of a pivoted brake-applying device, a spring-pressed lever having a sliding connection with said device and normally tending to move the same to apply the brake, link mechanism comprising a pivoted bell crank lever and a link pivotally connected at its opposite ends to the spring-pressed lever and the bell crank lever respectively and adapted to be set in substantially dead-center position to act on said springpressed lever to hold the brake-applying device in inoperative position, and means adjustablv connected with said traveling element for automatically throwing the link mechanism out of such position at any predetermined point in the travel of the traveling element to release the spring-pressed lever, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a pair of cooperating elements adapted for relative feeding movement, and driving means for causing relative feeding movement of'said elements, of brake mechanism comprising means normally tending to apply the brake to arrest said driving means, link mechanism connected to the brake mechanism and adapted to be set in substantially dead-center position and to hold said brake mechanism inoperative whenever in such position, and means adjustably connected to one of said pair of elements for automatically throwing the link mechanism out of such position to render the brake mechanism operative at any predetermined point in the relative feeding movement of said pair of elements, substantially as described. 7
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary element, a traveling element cooperating therewith, and driving means for moving said traveling element to cause a relative feeding movement between the same and said stationary element, of brake mechanism comprising means normally tending to apply the brake to arrest said driving means, link mechanism connected to the brake mechanism and adapted to be set in substantially dead center position and to hold said brake mechanism inoperative whenever in such position, and means adjustably connected to said travcling element for automatically throwing said link mechanism out of such position to render the brake mechanism operative at any predetermined point in the movement of said traveling element, substantially as described.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary element, a traveling element cooperating therewith, and driving means for moving said traveling element to cause a relative feeding movement between the same and said stationary element, of a pivoted brake applying device, a spring pressed lever having a sliding connection with said device and normally tending to move the same about its pivot to apply the brake and thereby arrest said driving means, link mechanism comprising a pivoted lever and a link connected at its opposite ends to said last named lever and the spring pressed lever respectively, said link mechanism being adapted to be set in substantially dead-center position to act on said spring-pressed lever to hold said brakeapplying device inoperative, and means adjustably connected to said traveling element for automatically throwing the link mechanism out of such position at any predetermined point in the movement of said. travel.- ing element to release the spring-pressed lcver, substantially as described.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plurality of relatively movable devices, and driving mechanism for causing relative movement thereof, of brake mechanism comprising means constantly tending to apply the brake for arresting the driving means and a toggle joint adapted to be set to lock said means and brakein inoperative position, and a member adjustably connected to one of said relatively movable devices for automatically actuating said toggle joint to release said means and brake at any desired predetermined point in such relative movement, substantially as described.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination. with a traveling element, and driving means therefor, of brake mechanism constantly tending to apply the brake to arrest said driving means, means comprisa toggle joint adapted to be set to lock the brake mechanism in inoperative position, and means adjustably connected with said traveling element for automatically actuating the toggle joint to release the brake mechanism, whereby the driving means may be arrested at any predetermined point in the travel of said traveling element, substantially as described. 10. In a device of the character described, the combination with a pair of cooperating elements adapted for relative feeding movement, and driving means for causing such relative feeding movement of said elements,

11. In a device of the character described, the combination with a pair of cooperating elements adapted for'relative feeding movement, and driving means for causing relative feeding movement of said pair of elements, of brake mechanism for arresting said driving means and adapted to be set in inoperative position, and means adjustably connected to one of said pair of elements for automatically rendering the brake mechanism operative at any predetermined point in' the relative movement of said pair of elements, said last named means being provided with means to indicate the place on one of said pair of elements with which the other of said pair of elements will register when the driving means is arrested, substantially as described.
12. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary element, a traveling element carrying a rotatable sup port, a work support and driving means for moving said traveling element to cause feeding movement of said support with respect to said stationary element, of brake mechanism normally biased to a position to arrest said driving means and comprising a toggle joint adapted to be set to lock the brake mechanism in inoperative position, and means adjustably connected to said traveling element for automatically actuating the tog gle joint to release the brake mechanism at any desired point in said relative feeding movement, substantially as described.
13. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary element, a traveling element carrying a rotatable support, and driving means for moving said traveling element to cause feeding movement of said support with respect to said stationary element, of brake mechanism for arresting said driving means and adapted to be set in inoperative position, and means adjustably connected to said traveling element for automatically rendering the brake mechanism operative at any desired point in saidrelative feeding movement, said last named means being provided with means for indicating the place on the rotatable support with which the stationary element will register when the driving means is arrested, substantially as described.
