Be it known that W8: Crirronn BROOKS and EDWIN 0. Kristin, citizens of the United States, residing at Ea,ginerw in the county of Saginaw and State of lrlichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Stop and Repeating Means for Graphophones of which the following; is
specification.
The improvements of this invention have to do with sound reproducing machines and embody certain novel repeating end stopping control devices. The repeating means employed is of u type heretofore proposed by us and comprising certain actuating m ans operable from the driving motor of the sound producing machine and timed in its action to cause 21. slight elevation of the reproducing stylus when the letter reaches the reproduction discontinuance point, there after carrying the reproducer to its predetermined reproduction commencement point respecting the record and depositing said reproducer upon the record. for the sound reproduction operation. The actuating means for the reproducer ehove re ierred to is of utility for effecting a single reproduction of a record, or repeated reproductions as may be controlled by a suitable operation predetermining device associated with said actuating means.

The means for shifting; the reproducer over the record G for the starting of reproduction action thereof, or for effecting repeated reproductions, is operated from the driver including the parts 6, 7 and 8. The actuating means comprises a shifting); lever 10 pivoted at 11to a stud 12, see Figure 4i, said stud 12 being itseli rotatively;- mounted in the base A. At its outer end the lever 10 projects from beneath the record carrier B and is formedwithbifurcated portion 1O receiving therein. the lower reduced extremity of an L-shaped arm 13 which is fixed to the tone arm 1 near the supporting connection for the latter. At its inner or opposite end the lever 10 is formed witi a rise or cam 10 and this end portion is curved slightly toward the axis 01: the actuating lever 14 which cooperates with said shifting lover. The actuating lever is. is pivoted on the base A at 15, and said lever comprises a main body portion of somewhat bell crank form. including an outwardly projecting arm. 16, and an auxiliary arm 17. The auxiliary arm 17 as shown in Figure 4; is practically a separate plate secured at 18 to the axial portion of the lever id, and said arm 17 overlaps the lever 10 and is adapted on pivotal movement of the lever 14- to ride up and on the cam 10 of the lever 10. The coop oration between the arm 17 and the lever 10 is such that rocking of the lever 1d will engage the arm 17 with the cam 10 and rock the inner end of the shifting lever 10 downwards thereby elevating its outer end and raising the reproducer slightly to disengage the stylus 5 from the record C.
in the practical operation. of the present invention it is contemplated to predetermine the point at which the reproducer will discontinue reproductiou, in the length oi the record C, by the mere act of depositing the stylus 5 upon the record at any point desired. When so deposited the actuating and controlling instrumentalities hereinbeiorc and hereinafter to be set forth will operate in such a way as to effectuate the mechanical. shifting oi the reproducer from such reproduction discontinuance point to a reproduo' tion commencement point and after the desired reproduction, once or more times, said reproducer will stop automatically at the predetermined discontinuance point. With the above in mind it is obvious that in addition to the raising of the reproduccr from the record C, in the manner before described, throughthe tilting oi. the lever 10 about its horizontal axis it is necessary to turn the lever 10 upon its vertical axis,
which is the stud 12. For this purpose there is mounted on tle stud 12 the arm 19, movement oi which is adapted to cause rotation oil the pivot stud 12 and the lever 10 fixed to rotate therewith. The arm 19 as seen in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive is dis-' posed in the path of movement of a projection 20 extending upwards from a plate 21 supported on the outer arm 16 of the lever 14:. The plate 21 has a pin and slot pivot connection at 22 with said arm 16 and mounted on the arm 16 is an eccentrically pivoted disk 23 the pivot 2-1 of which is shown in Figure 1, said pivot also being provided with a knob or handle 25 by which the disk is readily turned. By turning the disk 23, and owing to the engagement of this disk within a ring 25 forming an ex tension out the plate 21, it will be evident that the projection 20 cooperative with the arm 19 is capable of being moved relatively to said arm in various adjusted positions.
To establisha driving connection between the driver or shaft 6 and the lever 14; a link 27 is provided, said link being connected at one end with the inner arm of the lever 14 and being formed with a. flange lug 27 at its other end, the lug 2'7 adapted to engage the lugs 8 of the lugwheel 7. It the record carrier B is released from the detaining action of the brake shoe 28, see Figure 2, said carrier will start to rotate in the customary way and as a result an adjacent one of the lugs 8 of the driving lu a' wheel 7 will engage the flange luv; 27' of the link 27. In this manner the link 27 is pulled upon to rock the lever 14 and the initial rocking of said lever 14 moves the arm 17 and rocks the shifting lever 10 about its horizontal axis. In this way the reproducer is raised in respect'to the record disengaging the stylus 5 from the latter. The rocking of the lever 14 at a certain time brings the lug 20 of the plate 21 into ongagement with the arm 19 and on such engagement the arm 19 is moved inwards apredetermined extent dependent upon the adjustment of the plate 21.

The extent of this outward movement of the reproducer by the coaction of the parts 21 and 19 depends upon the adjustment of the plate21.. The adjustment of the plate as in Figure 1 is such as to carry the repi'oducer to the outermost reproducinr; portion of a typical twelve incli record C, this condition being indicated by indieia on the parts 23 and 26 which indicia comprises numerals denoting the different sizes of records and an arrow on the disk 23 adapted to be adjusted opposite the numerals or at intermediate points as may be desired.
It will be apparent that it the eccentric disk 23 is turned to shift the lug 29 of the plate 21 away from the arm 19, according to the arrangement of the parts as seen in Figure 1, on subsequent actuation oi. the lever 14- the lug 20 will engage the arm 19 some time after the lever l l begins to move, and under these conditions the shifting lever 10 will not be moved as great a distance is required according to the adjustment in Figure 1. It is in this way, namely, by adjusting the lug 2 9 with the plate 21 to positions at various distances "from the arm 19, that admits of shifting the arm 19 a greater or less distance, and consequently the lever 10 and the connected reproducer, whereby variable shifting actions of the reproducer may be obtained to cause it to be deposited upon records of different sizes at proper reproduction points, or deposited upon a record of a certain size at any desired point inthe length of said record.
The manner in which the reproducer is shifted to its reproduction commencement point on the record having been set forth, reference will now be made to the means for stopping the reproducer automatically when it reaches its predetermined, and like wise variable, reproduction discontinuance point. For this purpose a timing or operation control member is employed and is shown at 29, said member being mounted upon the pivot stud 12 and frictionally connected with the stud by means of tension and lock nuts and 31 respectively, which are screwed. upon the threaded portion of the stud 12. The timing member 29 is formed with a lateral extension 29 provided with a notch 29. The notch 29 is adapted to receive therein a lug 1 1 stamped out oi. the arm 16 of the lever 1 1. Under normal conditions, that is, when the record carrier B is stationary, the lug 1 1 is engaged in the notch 29 01" the member 29. 'llheretore it is possible to move the reproducer arm 1 back and forth over the record to set the stylus 5 at any point in the length of the record as a predetermined stoppage point for reproduction and during such operation the timing member 29 is stationary. The positive interlocking connection between said member and the lever arm 16 prevents the timing member from moving with the lever 10 and arm 19 which 01 course must move during the manipulation of the tone arm 1 in setting the reproducer preliminarily to the said reproduction discontinuance point.
When, however, the record carrier B is released and the driver 6 starts to rotate along with the carrier owing to such release, the first action of the driver through the link 27 to tilt the lever 1 1- to disengage the lug 14. from the notch 29 of the timing or trip member 29. In this way the member 29 freed on the initial movement or" the record carrier so that when the lever let has moved enough to raise the reproducer from the record, as soon. as the outward swinging movement of the reproducer starts, compolled by the shifting lever 10 the :lrictional connection between the timing member 29 and the part 19 comes into play to cause the member 29 to move with the lever 10 in the same direction as the part 19, namely inwards or towards the of the record.
At a certain time in the turning movement of the lug wheel 7 of the driver 6 a spring 32 connected at one end with the pivot which connects the parts 14: and 27 and passing at its other end through an eye 33 on the link 27 comes into play to position the link 27 relatively to the lever 14: whereby disengagement between the flange lug 27 and the cooperating lug 8 is effected. At the time of this disengagement the notch 29 of the member 29 is no longer opposite the lug 1430f the lever 14;. On such disengagement of the parts 27 and 8 a spring 34.- connected with the lever 14 pulls the lever 14 in a direction toward resuming its normal position. Such movement is limited, however, by engagement of the lug 14c with the inner edge of the extension 29 of the timing member 29. It being recalled that the freeing of the member 29 from the detaining action of the lug 14? thereafter permits or movement of the member 29 with the stud 12 and therefore synchronously with the reproducer and lever 10, it will be obvious that while the re producer is traveling toward the discontinuance point 011 the record C, as depicted in Figure 8, the lever 10 is gradually moving therewith on account of the connection between the parts 13 and 10, and likewise the timing member 29 and the arm 19 are moving gradually outwards owing to their frictional connection with one another and connection with the stud 12 which is actuated by the lever 10. When the member 29 has been moved far enough to cause its notch 29 to arrive opposite the lug 14 owing to the influence of the spring 5352: there will be a sudden rocking oi the lever 14: to its normal position effecting the normal interlocking of the lug 14 in said notch. This final. return of the parts to normal does one or two things according to the adjustment of an operation predetermining device. One thing is always efliected by such action and that is the movement 01 the link 27 to a position wherein its lug 27 is again in the path of the lugs 8. If the machine is set for a repeated operation the engagement be tween a lug S and the lug 27 will be compelled, the lever 1d rocked and the i-eproducer carried outward on the record and deposited at its proper reproduction commencement point according to the cycle of action which has just been fully described. It, on the other hand, the machine is set for the stopping of the reproduction on the return to normal of the lever 14 after one or more cycles of reproduction controlling operations the brake shoe 28 will be automatically applied incident to the reentering oi the lug 1a into the notch 29 of the timing member 29 so as to engage the record carrier B and stop the sound reproducing operation. Of course the stoppage oi the record carrier 13 stops the driving of the lug wheel 7 and though the lug 27 is ready to be engaged by a lug 8 it will not be so engaged owing to such stoppage.
The operation predetermining device con trolling the stopping; or repeating actions oi the operating instrumentalities herein set iorth includes means heretofore proposed by us comprising a rod 35 connected with an arm 36 fixed to the axis of the lever 14 so as to move with the lever. The rod is con nected to a short lever 37, see Figures Q and 3, loosely mounted on a shaft 38 to which shaft islixed a disk 39 and a ratchet wheel 40. At its free end thelever 3'? has a 'Dil-Wl ll engaging a wheel 40, and the disk 39l1as the notch 39 adapted to move opposite to a lug 42 upon the brake lever 41-3 which carries the brake shoe 28. By turning shaft ddthro'ugh the provision of a suitable handle or like means so that the notch. 39 no longer receives the h1g4! of the lever d3, said lug will ride onthe periphery of the disk 39 and thelever -13 will'be held in a position maintaining the brake shoe 28 out of engagement wit-lithe record carrier. The connection between the lever i l and the disk 89 is such that if we assume that the disk 39has been. turnedone increment of movement to efiiect a single reproduction of the record the brake shoe 28 will be released, the record will. be reproduced and at the completion of the reproduction the lug lei. being permitted to enter the notch 29" causes a final rocking of the lever let. The final rocking of the lever 14: as previously generally mentioned under the influence Oil: the spring" 34L eilects a pull upon the/rod 35 and turns the disk 5") one increment of movement back to its. original position, owing to the ratchet and pawl connections set forth. Such turning of the disk 39 causes the notch 39 to move opposite the lug 42 and the b 'ake lever 4:3 is permitted to move slightly to ca-i'ise reengagement of the brake shoe 28 with the record carrier B, therebv stopping the latter. It the disk 39 is set by more than one increment oi movement it will be necessary that there be performed a complete predetermined re .n'oduction of the record for each increment of movement imparted to the disk 39 in its adjustment owing to the fact that it requires a reproduction of the record to shift the disk 39 a single increment of movement toward. its normal. or stopping position.
The manner in which the member 25) acts to time the sound reproduction operation whether. the latter is to be performed a sin gle time or a ni'imloer of times will be more fully apparent when it is understood that the member 29 is held stationary by the locking means or lug 14c (hiring all movements of the reproducer which are effected by manipulation. That is, when the operator manually moves the reproducerarm 1 to set the reproducer at the point where reproduction is to stop, the member 29 always maintains the locked position of Figure 1, and this position therefore:invariably represents a constant adjustment of the timing member in correspondence with the reproducer predetermining that point to which the timing member must move, for the stopping of reproduction and which point is always fixed no matter where the operator sets the reproducer for predetermining its stopping position. Thus it is that after such setting oi? the reproducer the mechanical shifting of the same .to reproduction commencement position, which is a variable action under the control of themember 21, the extent o't movement of the member 29 car rying its notch 29" away ffPOYIll the lug lat is always equal to the extent oil movement oi the reproduccr from its reproduction stopping point position to its reproduction. commencing position. F or this reason the traverse oi the member 29 and reproducing traverse of the reproducer always correspond, enabling the discontinuance of re- ]noduction at the proper time or simultaneously with the arrival of the reproducer at the point of discontinuance of reproduction.
The expressions employed in certain following claims referring to devices connected with the reproducer should be interpreted in the light that the connections are indirect being made throughithe intervening tonearm and. possibly other parts.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed asnew is:
1. In. a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and a reproducer adapted to traverse a record thereon, of a part connected to the reproducer to move it to a reproduction commencement point and to be then moved by and with the reproducer during reproduction operation of the latter, an actuating device ror said part, a driver for said device, a timing member connected. with said first part to move to and from reproduction commencement point therewith, and means intermediate the timing member and actuating device to render the latter operative by the driver at a certain time during movement of the timing device as the reproducer moves from said reproduction commencement point.
2. In a sound reproducing machine, the
combination with a record carrier, and a re producer adapted to traverse a record upon the carrier, of means to move the reproducer to a reproduction commencement position, comprising a lever arranged to elevate and swing the reproducer and a single actuating member equipped with an arm to effect vertical movement of the lever, and a second arm having means to cause lateral movement of the lever.
3. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier, and a reproducer adapted to traverse a record upon the carrier, of means to move the reproducer to a reproduction commencement position, comprising a lever arranged to elevate and swing the reproducer, a single actuating member equipped with an arm to effect vertical movement of the lever, a second arm having a part adjustable to cause variable lateral movement of the lever, and means to adjust said part and constructed to control movement of the lever laterally according to diiferent sized records upon the carrier.
4. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and a reproducer adapted to traverse a record thereon, of a part connected to move with the reproducer to a reproduction commencement point and to be then moved by the reproducer during reproduction operation of the latter, an actuating device for said part, a
- driver for said device, a timing member connected with said first part to move to and from reproduction commencement point therewith, stopping means for the reproducer, and instrumentalities between the timing member and said actuating device whereby to render said stopping means eifective at a predetermined time during movement of the timing device as the latter is moved when the reproducer moves from the reproduction commencement point.
5. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier, and a re producer adapted to traverse a record upon the carrier, of means to move the reproducer to a reproduction commencement position, comprising a lever connected at one end with the reproducer and having a cam at its other end, and a single actuating member having a part to engage said cam to shift the lever vertically, and a second Part to move the lever laterally.
6. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and areproducer adapted to traverse a record thereon, of a part connected to move with the reproducer to a reproduction commencement point and to be then moved by the reproducer during reproduction operation of the latter, an actuating device for said part, a driver for said device, a timing member connected with said first part to move to and from reproduction connncnccment point therewith, means intermediate the timing member and actuating device to render the latter operative by the driver at a certain. time during movement of the timing device as the reproducer moves from said reproduction commencement point, and stopping means for the reproducer also controlled by the means last above mentioned.
7 In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and a reproducer adapted to traverse a record. thereon, of a partconnected to move with the reproducer to a reproduction commencen'ient point and to be then moved by the reproducer during reproduction of the latter, an actuating device for said part, a driver for said device, a timing member connected with said first part to move to and from reproduction commencement point therewith, the connection between the timing member and the said first part admitting oi variation of the timing functioning of said member, and means intermediate the timing member and actuating device to render the latter operative by the driver at a certain time during movement of the timing device as the rcproducer moves from said reproduction commencement point.
8. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and a reproducer adapted to traverse a record thereon, of a part connected to move with the rcproducer to a reproduction commencement point and to be then moved by the reproducer during reproduction of the latter, an. actuating device for said part, a driver for said device, a timing member connected with said first part to move to and "from reproduction commencement point therewith, and, means intermediate the timing member and actuating device to render the latter operative by the driver at a certain time during movement of the timing device as the re producer moves from said reproduction commencement point, the last named means interlocking the timing member and the actu ating device at a certain time in the movement of the former with the reproducer so as to hold the timing device relatively stationary notwithstanding manual movement of the reproducer with which the timing device is indirectly connected by the first mentioned part.
9. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier, and a re producer adapted to traverse a record upon the carrier, of means to move the re producer to a reproduction commencement position, comprising a lever, a connection between the lever and reproducer such that the two may move together, reproduction stop means, a timing member controlling the operation of said stop means movable with the lever, an element locking the timing I the reproducer is being moved by the lever to reproduction commencement position.
10. ln'a sound reproducing machine, the
combination with a record carrier, and a re producer adapted to traverse a record upon the carrier, of means to move the reproducer to a reproduction connnenccmcnt position comprising mechanism operable to shift the reproducer and then adapted to be operated by the reproducer as it moves with a record, and reproduction stopping means controlled from said mechanism.
11. In a sound'reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier, and a reproducer adapted to traverse a record upon the carrier, oi means to move the reproducer to a reproduction commencement position comprising mechanism operable to shift the reproducer and then adapted to be operated by and with the reproducer as an incident to the reproducing coaction oi the reproduccr with a record, reproduction stopping means controlled from said mechai iism, including a timing member movable with said mechanism, and means to lock the timing member against movement with the reproduccr when the latter is manipulated to set it at will relatively to the record.
12. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier, and a producer adapted to traverse a recordup'on the carrier, or means to move the reproducer to a reproduction commencement position comprising mechanism operable to shift the reproducer and then adapted to be operated by and with the reproducer as an incident to the reproducing coaction of the reproducer with a record, reproduction stopping means controlled from said mechanism, including a timing member movable with said mechanism, and means to lock the timing member against movement with the reproducer when the latter is manipulated to set it at will relatively to the record, the last means comprising operating means for the reproducer.
13. In a soun'd reproducing machine, the combination With a record carrier, and a reproducer adapted to traverse a record upon the carrier, of means to move the reproducer to a reproduction commencement position comprising mechanism operable to shift the repro'ducer and then adapted to be operated by'and with the reproducer as an incident to the reproducing coaction ofthe reproducer with a record, reproduction stopping means controlled from said mechanism, includi g a timing member movable with said mechanism, and an actuating lever for operating said mechanism'in the manner stated and adapted to interlock withv the timing member to prevent movement of the latter with said mechanism under certain conditions.

combination of a record carrier and a reproducer adapted to cooperate with a record upon said carrier, a lever connected with the reproducer to move therewith, an actuating lever comprising the following parts i. e. 7 an arm adapted to engage and tilt said lever in one direction, and a second arm having means to shift said lever in another direction; and a third arm connected to move with the first named lever, automatic means to operate the actuating lever, and means on the actuating lever coacting with the third arm to hold the automatic means inactive a predetermined time.
15. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination of a record carrier and a reproducer adapted to cooperate with a record 7 engage and tilt said lever in one direction,
the other an arm having means to shift said lever in another direction, said shifting means embodying a plate pivoted to said uecond arm and having an engaging lug to act on said first lever, and manipulative means to adjust the position of the plate whereby to arrange said lug at different distances from the portion of the first lever on which the lug acts.
16. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination of a record carrier and'a rcproducer adapted to cooperate with a record upon said carrier, a vertically tiltable and laterally swinging lever connected with the reproducer to raise and swing the same, an actuating lever having an arm engageable with said first leverto tiltthe latter vertically and embodying a main arm, an adjustablc member upon said main arm'cooperative with the swinging lever to shift it'laterally, and a timing member also con nected with the first lever so that it may move therewith and independently thereof, the actuating lever being provided with loclo ing means for holding the timing member stationary during manipulative setting adjustment of the reproducer, said timing member having means to maintain the lockmg means aforesaid inactive during reproducing movement of the reproducer, and reproduction stopping means adapted to'be operated by the actuating lever as an incident to movement of said lever whereby the locking means aforesaid is caused to move into locking cooperation with the timing member.
