Be it known that WQ, CLIFFORD C. BROOKS and EDWIN O. KLEMM, citizens of the United States, residing at Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Automatic Stop and Repeating Means for Graphophones, of which the following is a specification.
The improvements of this invention comprise certain novel automatic stopping and repeating mechanism for talking or sound reproducing machines.
There have been heretofore proposed a number of different types of automatic stopping mechanisms for sound reproducing machines, and certain of these mechanisms are being marketed today. So far as we are aware, however,such stopping mechanisms have not proved very successful under practical conditions of service owing to the somewhat intricate preliminary manual adj ustments required in their use. As regards automatic repeating mechanisms heretofore proposed, we do not know of any of such mechanisms which have been marketed tothe extent of meeting public approval, the reason for this doubtless being that they are open to the same objection as the stop mechanisms or that they are so complicated in construction as not to afford practical devices for the purpose thereof.
In the use of stop mechanisms heretofore proposed ofknown types the difficulties incident to operation will be appreciated when it is stated that as a' general thing the adjustment of all such mechanisms necessitates all or nearly all of the following actions: 1

children, the infeasibility of automatic stop mechanisms such as just referred to will be appreciated and very generally many of these adjustments or equivalent adjustments are required for such repeating devices as have been proposed, making the i latter equally objectionable in the particular respects stated.
\Vith the foregoing in view the present invention has been designed to obviate complicacy of preliminary adjustments, this being accomplished to the extent that in the use of the automatic stopping and repeating mechanism hereinafter-set forth, as used for stopping purposes, the manual movements are reduced to three including (a) Placing of the needle in the last groove of the record or the groove where stopping is to take place.

Still another and important object of the present invention has been to so design the stopping and repeating mechanism to permit the. automatic stopping and starting of reproduction at any desired point in the length of the record whereby any selected portion of a record. maybe reproduced and reproduction discontinued, and whereby any selected portion of the record may be reproduced and the. reproduction repeated continuously, or one or more times within the range'of control of the operation predetermining device.
*Com'prehende'd within the improvements of this invention are four main and essential units of mechanism, necessary to the invention in order to obtain the completest results and widest scope of functioning desirable for the purposes of the invention; however. it is to be understood that the invention involves cooperative actions of two or more of said mechanisms, where the scope of action and usefulness of the invention may be desired to be attenuated, as for instance to employ only the automatic stop means or a portion only of the several units of mechanism. The units of mechanism referred to include essentially an operation predetermining device suitable to control repetition of reproduction for continuous reproduction,
repetition of reproduction for any one of a predetermined number of times, and stopping of reproduction; a reproducing arm actuator by which the reproducing arm is transferred from the inner limit of its travel over the sound zone of the record to the opposite or starting limit; an adjustable repeat point control er governing the action of the reproducingarm and style carried thereby; and an adjustable trip settable to control the point of stopping of the movement of the reproducer or to control the point from which said repr'oducer is re turned for renewed travel over the sound zone of a record. The invention resides not only in details of construction of the various mechanical units just mentioned but in cooperative constructions and phases of operation of these units, all of which will be presented more clearly in the aft-ergoing detailed description, to be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a baseboard carrying the ordinary rotatable sound record table and other customary sound reproducing means, the table and the tone arm being partly broken away. to show in detail the reproducer resetting actuating devices, the adjustable trip and directly coacting parts, and dotted lines showing the brake lever and its manner of cooperation with the operation predetermining device. The various parts of this figure are adjusted as when the machine is stopped, the positions being those assumed also when the record has just been placed in position and the stylus arranged just prelimlnary to starting the machine.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure l with the various partsin the positions assumed thereby on starting the machine, an operation effected by turning the handle of the operation predeterminin device.
Figure 3 is a View like higures l and 2 showing the adjustment. of the various controlling parts during the traverse of the reproducing stylus over the soundzone of the record, said controlling parts being in position to be tripped to restore them momentarily to the condition shown in Figure 1, if a repetition of the record is called for, or temporarily to the condition shown in Fig ure 1 if the reproduction is to stop when the predetermined operation of the sound zone to be reproduced has been traversed'by the reproducing means.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view through the parts shown in the above described figures, the reproducing means illustrated in elevation.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the tone arm about at the limit of its inward reproducing movement and ready to be actuated by the resetting actuator therefor.
Figure 6 is a View like Figure 5 but showing the tone arm in the operation of being restored to the starting limit of its traverse over the sound zone of the record, the dotted line position showing the tone arm and its resetting actuator in substantially the positions assumed as the needle is deposited upon the record ready to start its traverse of the sound zone of the latter.
It will be of assistance in arriving at a clear understanding of this invention to indicate briefly a complete general cycle of operation of the machine before describing the detail structural parts. When the reproducer is in the position of Figure 1, substantially at the inner limit of its movement over the sound zone of the record A, the rotatable table or platform B of the machine will be assumed to be at rest. The foregoing is to be considered as the general starting position in using the apparatus of this invention, said position being determined as most preferable because it is about the easiest position in which the user of the machine may leave or set the reproducer stylus without unusual effort in locating the same. The stylus may rest upon the innermost smooth portion of the record if desired without in any way interfering with the proper operation of the machine.
On starting to use the machine the operator simply lifts the reproducer arm D, places-a suitable record A on the table B, and lowers the reproducer so that its stylus rests on the said innermost groove if the whole record is to be played. it the stylus is deposited on some other groove the reproducer will be adjusted for discontinuance of reproduction at such groove. T he foregoing is the preliminary adjustment of the reproducer which controls the point where reproduction ceases, or from which repeat action is to occur. as the case may be.
Now if the machine is started by a proper movement of the predetermining device, gen erally designated as C, the resetting actuator will raise the reproducing arm D and the latter will be carried to the position shown in Figure 2 and gently deposited upon the uppermost smooth portion of the record, with a nicety of movement and ease greater than possible when operated by the human hand. Under gentle pressure incident to the gravitation of the resetting lever the reproducing stylus will be forced into the outermost track of the sound zone and when it reaches the inner limit of its traverse the machine will be stopped at such limit or the reproducing arm D will be raised and the resetting action again performed, dependent upon the adjustment of the predetermining This lever is designated 1, is pivoted at 2 on the base E supporting the table B, and has a brake shoe 3 adapted to engage the periphery of said table under the action of a spring 4. The lever 1 may control the application to the table of power derived from a spring motor by disengage- 1 meat of the shoe 3 from the table B, or if an electrical motor is employed to actuate the table the movement of the lever 1 is adapted to connect movable and stationary contacts 5 and 6 on the lever and base E respectively, said contacts being terminals of an electric circuit including the motor by which the table B may be rotated. The lever 1 has a protuberance 1 on an edge thereof, the latter adapted to engage in a recess 7 in the periphery of a controlling disk 8, or engage with the periphery itself. lVhen the protuberance 1' enters the recess 7 the brake lever 1 is in stopping position but when the protuberance engages the periphery of the disk 8 the brake lever will have been moved slightly pivotally into a position permitting the operation of the table B. The disk 8 as seen in Figures 1 to 3 and Figure 4 is mounted on a spindle 9 which forms a part of the operation predetermining device to be later desribed.

Referring now to Figures 1 and 5 par 'ticularly, it will beobserved that we employ a driver 10 in the form of a gear meshing with a pinion 11 on the motor shaft 12 which by impart movement to said connector, the range of which movement may generally be said to be shown by the several Figures 1, 2 and 3. The connector 15 comprises a link with the outer end of which is comiected a flexible member or cable 16 passing around pullegjs 17 and 18 on the under side of the base i and attached to a lever 19 mounted loosely on the spindle 9 aforesaid. A spring 20 is connected with the lever 19 to actuate the same as will be later described, and said lever carries a pawl 21 engageable with a ratchet wheel 22 fixed to the spindle 9, the ratchet wheel having one of 1ts otherwise regularly formed teeth omitted.
Still another cable 16" leadsfrom the connector 15 around a pulley 17 to the resetting lever 23 shown best in Figure 5. 'The lever 23 is pivoted to a bracket 24 and is of angle form comprising a horizontal arm operating beneath the reproducer arm D of the machine, and a vertical arm to which the cable 16 is adjustably connected at 25. It will be evident that if the flange 14 of the connector 15 is engaged by one of the projections 13 on the driver 10, a longitudinal movement may be imparted to the member 15 causing a pull on the cable 16, thereby tilting the normally horizontal arm of the resetting lever 23 causing said arm to engage the tone arm. In this manner the upper edge of the said arm of the lever 23 is adapted to be caused .to act as an inclined plane for elevating the anal) and causing the latter to move downwards and outwards to reset the reproducing stylus thereof at a starting polnt upon the zone of the record.
4 Adjustable rgpeet point controller. This starting} point is regulated by an adjustable repeat point cont-roller F inthe slide 26. The slide 26 has an abutting head 29 to directly cooperate with the arm D and a' thumb piece 30 is provided to facilitate turnin the shaft 28, the latter having also an indicator pointer 31 associated with numerical indicia provided on the lever 23 to assist the operator in positioning the member 29 whereby this member will be variably adjustable to limit the outward movement of the arm D to extents such as tocause the reproducing stylus to be deposited in a proper position for starting the reproduction ofrecords of different sizes, such for-instance as 8, 10 and 12 inch records. It is evident that the adjustment of the member 26, however, under the control of theparts 28 and 30 permits of a starting positioning of the reproducing stylus predeterminable distances from the starting roove or track of the record sound zone.
This is desirable when repetition action of certain portions of the record more or less remote from the outermost starting point is desirable to be effected.
Automatic stopping means.
On the reproducing arm I) and adjacent to the point where said arm has universal connection at G. in a well known manner, with the base E,- there is mounted an adjustable trip 32, the latter involving an arm projecting inwards from the arm D and having a portion encircling the latter and in frictional engagement with the same. This trip is quite similar to the trip of corresponding construction set forth in l nited States Patentv No. 1,132,356 granted March 16, 1915 to E. O. Kleinm. The trip 32 is adapted to engage a locking lever 33 pivoted to a supporting plate 34. said locking lever 33 having a slot 33 in which is adapted to operate a lug 35 on a control lever 36 transverse to the lever 33 and likewise pivoted to the plate 34. The lever 36 is pivotally connected at 37 with the outer end of the connector 15. Adjacent to the lever 33 is the trip detent 38 which is a sliding and pivotally movable part connected to the plate 34 by the pin and slot connection at 39 and connected to the control lever 36 by the pin and slot connection 40. A light spring 41 is attached to the trip detent- 38 and both the parts 33 and 38 have vertical lugs at their free outer ends engageable with the trip 32. The operation of the arts just described will be understood cleai ly in connection with the description of the main operation predetermining device C now to be set forth.
Main operation predete'mm'm'ng device.
This device comprises the parts best seen in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive and including the elements 8, 9, 16, 19, 20 and 21 previously set forth.
Together with these element the operation predetermining device includes a suitable manipulating handle 42 at the upper end of the shaft 9, said shaft carrying a pointer 43 adjacent to said handle, the pointer being opposite the recess 7 in the disk 8 fixed to said shaft 9. There is located on the upper surface of the base E coaxial with the shaft 9, a dial 44 provided as a part of the bushing 45 in which the shaft 9 operates, or separate if desired, said dial having indicia thereon in the form of numerals 1 to 6, in the present instance, adapted in cooperation with the pointer 43 to enable setting of the predetermining device for obtaining on to six reproductions of a record. Of course a larger or smaller limit of reproductions may be established by this feature of construction of the invention by immaterial modification.
The dial 44 has also the indication C to enable positioning of the shaft 9 to obtain a continuous reproduction of the record until manual stopping, and also the indication S for a similar purpose to enable positioning of the predetermining device for stopping the operation of reproduction'or the operation of the machine in other words.
Description of general operation of machine.
\Vith the parts arranged as shown in Figure 1, the normal position when the machine is stopped, with the record A in place and ready to be played, and the reproducer I) set at the reproduction stopping point as stated at (a). all that it is necessary for the operator to do to start the machine is to ad just the repeat point controller F it it does not happen to be adjusted to a position in accordance with the size of the record. and then turn the handle 42 of the operation predetermining device to a proper point to obtain the desired action of the machine, said point being determined by bringing the pointer 43 opposite a proper portion of the indicia of the dial 44.
As a first instance we will suppose that the pointer 43 is turned to a point opposite the numeral 1. By this action the disk 8 is turned causing the protuberance 1 of the brake lever 1 to ride from the recess 7 to the periphery of the disk. The brake shoe 3 is thus released from the table B and under the influence of its suitable motor the table starts to turn. The driver 10 being geared to the motor shaft likewise rotates constantly with said shaft, and one of the projections 13 on the driver 10 engages with the connector 15 and moves the connector from a position substantially that of Figure 1 to that of Figure 2. The result of said movement is to shift the control lever 36 carrying the projection 35 of the latter out of the slot 33' of the locking lever 33 and causing said projection by engagement with the adjacent edge of the lever to cam said lever to the right to the position of Figure 2. Simultaneously with this action the pin of the connection 40 between the lever 36 and the trip detent 38 is moved to permit the spring 41 to draw the detent inwards out of the path of the trip 32 thereby unlocking 'the trip so it is free to move with the reproducer D. Simultaneously with the above movements the cable 16 attached to the connector 15 is pulled upon, thereby tilting the resetting lever 23, elevating the reproducing arm D and moi'ingthe latter to set its stylus 'on the outermost smooth portion of the record A, according to the adjustment of the repeat point controller F. Simultaneously.with the above operation the cable 16 is pulled upon through the connections 15 and 13 with the driver 10 to expand the spring 20, move the lever 19 pivotally, and
engage the pawl 21 with a fresh tooth on the ratchet-wheel 22.
When the above several operations have been substantially completed the actuating movement of the driver 10 on the connector 15 will have been substantially completed by the performance of practically a complete revolution of the projection 13 which has engaged and moved the part 15. The movement of the part 15 inwards by the driver 10 and subsequent movement outwards under the influence of the spring 20 on said connector 15 causes a lug 46 on the plate 34 to so coact with the member 15 that its flange 14 is removed from the path of travel of the lugs 13 and held in such position by the lug as shown in Figure 3, ready to be restored to the position of Figure 1 by the cooperation of a light spring 47 with the member 15.
The flange 14 is likewise held out of the path of the lugs 13 by'the prevention of full return movement of the part 15 owing to engagement of the projection with the 16 toward its normal condition of Figure 1' sufliciently for the pawl 21 tobe readyto engage the fresh tooth previously mentioned, on the ratchet wheel 22 but not sufliciently to let the spring 20 actuate the lever 19 to cause said pawl to turn the wheel 22 and shaft 9 a distance equal to the length of said tooth.
The position assumed by the parts at this stage of the operation is depicted in Figure 3 of the drawings wherein it will be observed that the reproducer is traversing the sound zone of the record, the trip 32 at the same time gradually approaching the locking lever 33 which holds the. control lever 36 in the position of Figure 3 to thereby maintain practically all of the parts of the stopping means in the positions of Figure 3. As soon as the reproducing stylus has reached the inward limit of its movement the trip 32 engages the outer lug of the lever 33 and moves the latter until the projection 35 escapes from the part 33* and enters again the slot 33' in the manner shown in Figure 1. In this action the movement of the control lever 36 permits the restoration of the trip detent 38 to the position of Figure 1 and likewise the release of the lever 36 from the member 33 permits the spring 20 to pull the lever 19 the requisite distance whereby the pawl 21 coacting with a tooth of the ratchet wheel 22 will impart one increment of movement to the shaft 9, cansing the disk 8 to be turned to bring its recess 7 opposite the protuberance 1 of the lever 1, permitting said protuberance to move into the recess and thereby sufiicient movement of the lever to apply the brake shoe 3 to the table B and stop the machine.
The above operation sets forth that action of the operation predetermining device incident merelyto the setting of the same for starting the machine. accomplishing a single reproduction of the record and then stopping the machine accurately and automatically. To obtain a repetition of the reproduction one or agreater number of times, the handle 42 obviously may be grasped to turn the shaft 9 and its disk 8 to cause the recess to move two or more increments of movement away from the protuberance 1". It the adjustment be two increments. as'an example. it is obvious that the action of the pawl 20 previously described would have been to turn the disk 8 back only one increment of movement instead of to a position opposite the protuberance 1 of the lever 1. at the end of the reproducing operation above set forth. Under such conditions the disk 8 would still hold the lever 1 in released position at the end of the first reproduction of the record so .that when the parts reach the positions shown'in Figure 1 after such first reproduction the continuance of the operation of the motor will cause the driver 10 to move and adjust the parts again as shown in Figures 2 and 3,. whereby a second reproduction is. effected; after which on account of the action of the pawl 20 on the ratchet wheel 22 the machine would be brought to a stop owing to movement of the disk 8 bringing its recess? opposite the protuberance 1 of the lever. 1. The manner in which one, two or more reproductions or repeat actions of the machine may be accomplished will be evident in 'view of the above description, the desired result being obtained merely by giving the disk 8 one or more increments of rotation, each increment representative, so to speak, of one reproducing action of the record, and the disk being'restored after each reproduction of the record by movement equal to one of the increments specified.
Continuous operation of machine.
The continuous operation of the machine for continued reproductions of the record oven until the motor is run down, or indefinitely if an electric or similar drive is used, is obtainableby turning the disk 8 by the handle 42 to bring the pointer 43 opposite the designation C'on the dial 44. The position of the disk is onein which a smooth surface of the mm Wheel 22 caused by omitting one of its teeth, is opposite the pawl 20, rendering said pawl inactive to restore the disk to its normal position under the control of the parts 10, 13, 16 and 20, for which reason continuous repeating of the various operations of the machine as above set forthwill take place.
Removal and replacement of record.
operation of removing and replacing a record will be facilitated. On the other hand, if the above method of operation of the instrumentalities of the invention is not used, the customary mode of removing and replacing the record, as by simply grasping and lifting the tone arm D, may be resorted to.
Govztrollz'ng reproduction or repeated reproductions of any portion of a record.
It is believed to be an essentially novel and characteristic feature of the present invention that the repeat action controlling means hereof is adapted without the slightest increase in regard to complicacy of operation, as compared with the operation heretofore described, t0 permit of reproduction of any portion of aparticular record either one or more times, or continuously, whether such selected portion of the record he at the outermost part of the sound zone, innermost part, middle part, or combinations of such arts that may be adjacent to one another.
he foregoing feature of the invention is important in many ways, as for instance in the teaching of music in schools where a record may contain several separated sound zones each devoted to a folk song, and it is desired to play from one or a selected one or more of said song's either one or more times, or continuously.
It is to be understood that there is always a direct relation between the extentof travel of the reproducing stylus from the be inning of its movement over a predetermined sound Zone or portion thereof to the end of such movement, and the corresponding extent of travel of the trip 32 until it engages and operates the locking lever 33. The above relation between the extents of movement of said parts is a constant one and the trip detent 38 is employed to insure movement and positioning of the trip 32 substantially in engagement with the locking lever 38 when the reproducing means is placed in its operating position upon the record A, which operating position it must be recalled is always the position at which said reproducing means will stop at any time stopping is permitted, required or controlled through the operation predetermining device C.
Likewise the preliminary operatin position of the reproducing means according to this invention is always the position at which thereproduction of a record will momentarily cease and from which the reproducing means will be reset for repeat action, if repetition of the reproduction or continuous reproduction is called for by the setting of the main operation predetermining device C. Thus when a record is placed in position upon the table B as the parts are arranged in Figure l, the operator may raise and swing the re roducer arm D at will over the surface 0 the record but the trip 32 will be maintained in the position of Figure 1 notwithstanding such movement, being held by the parts 33 and 38. The moment the operator lowers the arm D and deposits the reproducing stylus on the record A for the preliminary operating position of the stylus at which it will stop, and from which it will start to repeat, the trip is positioned pro )erly so that later on start ing the machine by the device C, the detent 38 will be withdrawn and permit the trip to move with the arm D to the reproduction starting position, which may be that shown in Figure 2 or a position some distance in from the first record groove of the record A, according to the adgustment to the repeat point controller F.
The detent 38 is never manually operable. It works wholly automatic as an incident to the driving action-of the driver 10, for which reason the operator of the machine never has to take care to insure a proper action of the trip 32 and the parts 33 and 38, a factor highly important to an elimination of complicacy in reference to the whole operation of the invention.
For the starting of the machine, therefore, Where the same size of record is used continuously and the whole record is to be played, one or more times or continuously, all the operator has to do is to attend to the preliminary placing of the reproducer in the position of Figure 1, and turn the predetermining device C, two operations practically equivalent to those employed in the use of the ordinary graphophone machines which persons are accustomed to operate today. On using records of different sizes. manipulation of the members 30 and 26 is called for but is a very simple matter indeed. To utilize selected portions only of a record for reproduction the reproducer will be deposited at a point substantially Where the particular portion of the record selected stops and the parts 26 and 30 will be adjusted to predetermine suflicient' move- Detail phases of action.
As seen in the dotted line position of Figure 6, the member 29 moves on an are such that the mere weight of the tone arm on the upper portion of the lever 23 causes a slight pressure against the outer side of the tone arm sufiicient with the rotation of the table B when the reproducing stylus engages the record to slowly but forcibly move the stylus into the first or any selected reproducing portion of the record.
The brake and stop mechanism functions as an electric switch control equally as well as a brake stop control, so that no alteration is required in the machine when-electric motive power is used. I
No additional power is required to operate the resetting actuating means for the reproducer. In fact the provision of the latter acts as a power conserving means because it is operated by power which is usually lost in the stopping or starting of the motor; said actuating means also virtually acts as a retarder for the motor and prevents the latter from racing at the end of a reproduction. v
lhe various parts employed as features of this invention are simply constructed and as there is practically no wear upon the same they will last as long as any other working parts of the machine.-
y way of summarizing the general features of construction of the machine hereinbefore described, it may be noted that the reproducer actuating devices. the operation predetermining device and the controlling parts 32, 33 and 38 constitute a general control mechanism whereby the desired results of automatic stopping of reproduction, and definite or indefinite repeat operations of the reproducer are obtained. There may be provided for the abutment or slide member 26 and its adjusting means other indicia than the designations of the size of the records on the extension of the lever 23 which-carries the slide 26, whereby to facilitate whatever adjustment of the member 26 may be required in order to cause depositing of the reproducer stylus practically at any point in the length of the record groove for the commencement of reproduction operations. a I
It is to be understood that the term re producer as used in the claims found hereinafter is intended to refer broadly to the general reproducing instrumentality employed in this machine such asthe reproducing arm and the sound box and stylus carried thereb ,.considered as a Whole and single repro ucing device.
It is furthermore to be understood that this invention contemplates the employment of the automatic stopping mechanism herein described, or the repeating mechanism whether combined or separately used and therefore it is not desired to be restricted to mere details of construction of these particular devices whether combined or separately em loyed.

As regards the adjustment of the stop member 26 by the handle 30, it is to be observed that movement of the stop member to the left as seen in Figure 5 may affect adjustment of said member to position the reproducing stylus at any point substantially between the outermost groove of a ten inch record and the innermost groox e of such record. If the pointer 31 is opposite the num- /ber 8 of course the stop 26 will be adjusted for reproduction of sound from the starting point of an eight inch record. The foregoing is merely a further elucidation of the adjustment possibilities of the member 26 in controlling the point of starting of sound reproduction. i
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is:
1. In a sound reproducing machine, the.
combination with a record carrier and operating means. therefor, and a reproducer operable therewith, of an operation predetermining device, and means controlled by said device to cause a, predetermined number of traversing operations of the reproducer upon any portion of a record and stopping of the carrier, and repeated traversing actions of the reproducer without stopping of the carrier.
2. Ida sound reproducing machine, the
combinationwith a record carrier and a reproducer cooperative with a record disposed thereon, of automatic means for causing reproduction discontinuing action of the reproducer, comprising a trip movable by the reproducer during the reproducing action of the latter and; controlling said automatic means, and meansto hold the trip stationary relative to the reproducer while the latter is preliminarily positioned on the record to determine the reproduction discontinuance point, and means to release the trip sothat it may move with the reproducer when said reproducer is shifted to cause reproduction commencement.
3. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and a reproducer cooperative-with a record disposed thereon, of automatic means for causing the reproduction discontinuing and commencement action of the reproducer, a trip movable by the reproducer during the reproducing action of the latter and controlling said automatic means, and means to hold the trip stationary relative to the reproducer while the latter is preliminarily positioned on the record to determine the reproduction discontinuance point, and means to release the trip so that it may move with the reproducer as the latter is shifted for reproduction commencement action by said automatic means. 4;. In a talking machine, the combination of a sound box, means to return said box from its reproduction discontinuance position to its position of reproduction commencement, comprising an actuating member, operating means for said actuating member, a detent and means to release he detent as an incident to movement of the sound box toward its reproduction discontinuance point, whereby the operating means is permitted to actuate the actuating member to carry the sound box back to its point of reproduction and commencement, sail last mentioned means including a lever having an adjustable stop arm, and adjusting means for said arm comprising rack and pinion devices substantially as set forth.
5. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and operating means therefor, and a reproducer to traverse a record upon the carrier, of an operation predetermining device including stop means for the carrier, means coacting'with' the predetermining device to cause a definite selected number of traversing operations of the reproducer in reference to any selected reproducing portion of a record upon the carrier, and means operable by the predetermining device to release the record carrier for operation on such release.
6. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and opoperable therewith, of an operation predetermining device. and mechanism controlled by said device for causing the reproducer to start into action for traversing a selected reproducing portion of a record.
7. In a sound reproducing'machine, the combination with a record carrier and op erating means therefor, and a reproducer operable therewith, of an operation predetermining device, andmechanism operated by said device for causing the reproducer to start into action for traversing aselected reproducing portion of a record including instrumentalities for effecting repeated operation of the reproducer upon said selected portion of the record.
8. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier. a motor to drive the same, and a reproducer, of means for discontinuing reproducing action of the reproducer at a predetermined point in the length of a record, controlled by engaging the reproducer with the record at that point and leaving the reproducer in such position.
9. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier, a motor to drive the same, and a reproducer, of means for discontinuing re roducing action of the reproducer at a pre etermined point in the length of a record, cont-rolled by engaging the reproducer with the record at that point and leaving it there, and mechanism to thereafter carry the reproducer to a startin point on the record.
10. n a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a recordcarrier, a motor to drive the same, and a reproducer, of means for discontinuing reproducing action of the reproducer at a predetermined point in the length of a record, set by engaging the reproducer with the record at that point and leaving it there, and mechanism to thereafter carry the reproducer to astarting point on the record and then place it in cooperation with the record.
11. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and a reproducer co-operative with a record dis posed thereon, said reproducer being adapted to be set by hand to a point in the record to thereby initially determine its reproduction discontinuance point, automatic means to move the reproducer to reproduction commencement point on the record, reproduction discontinuin means, atrip COOPBIHr'. tive with the iscontinuing means and adapted to move with the reproducer during reproducing action of the latter, andmeans for holding the trip in a certain position during the initial manual setting of the reproducer, operable to free the trip tomove with the reproducer as the latter isacted on vby said automatic means. erating means therefor, and a reproducer 12. reproduction discontinuing means, a trip reproduction commencement point and to enable the trip to thereafter move with the reproducer as the latter reproduces sound, and means tocause effective action of the discontinuing means when the trip reaches the certain position aforesaid while moving with the reproducer.
13. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and a reproducer cooperative with a record disposed thereon, of reproduction discontinuing means for said reproducer, a trip movable by the reproducer during the reproducing action of the latter and adapted to cause the discontinuing means to operate, automatic means to shift the reproducer to a point of commencement of reproduction, and detent means for said trip device to hold the same stationary relatively to the reproducer while the discontinuing means is operative.
14. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a. record carrier anda reproducer cooperative with a record disposed thereon, o;f reproduction discontinuing means for said reproducer, a trip movable by the reproducer during the reproducing action of the latter and adapted to cause the discontinuing means to operate, auto-.
matic means to shift the reproducer to a point of commencement of reproduction, and detent means for said trip to hold the same stationary relatively to the reproducer while the discontinuing means is operative and operable to release the trip so that it may move with the reproducer when the latter is traversing the record.
15. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination of a record carrier and a reproducer associated therewith, stopping means for the carrier, a device to shift the reproducer to a reproduction commencement point relative to a. record on the carrier, a trip member controlling the stopping device and movable with the reproducer, detent means for the trip member operative during manual actuation of the reproducer for setting purposes and preventing movement of the trip member with the reproducer at such time, and means operable incident to the operation of the shifting device aforesaid to release the trip member from' the detent means so that the trip member will move with the reproducer during the reproduction operation.
16. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier, a motor to drive the same, and a reproducer, of means for discontinuing reproducing action of the reproducer at a predetermined point in the length of a record by stopping of the carrier and controlled by engaging the reproducer with the record at that point and lea'vin it so engaged.
.17. n asound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and a reposition cooperating with the record for producer associated therewith and operable manually to predetermine a point of discontinuance of reproduction thereof in respect to a record upon the carrier, of means to mechanically shift the reproducer to a point of reproduction commencement on a record, a trip movable with the reproducer under certain conditions and held stationary .under other conditions, and controlling the operation of said mechanical shifting means, and means operable automatically to maintain the trip stationary when the reproducer reaches a discontinuance point of reproduction and to release the trip when the reproducer is acted upon by the mechanical-shifting means.
18. In asound reproducing machine, the combination with-a record carrier, a motor to drive the same, and a reproducer; of automatic means to lift the reproducer from a record on the carrier and carry it to a starting reproduction, and a manual predetermining device to control the setting of said automatic means in motion and itself controlled by said automatic means.
19. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier, a motor to drive the same, and a reproducer; of automatic means to lift the reproducer from a record on the carrier and-carry it to a po sition cooperating with the record. for starting reproduction, and a manual predetermining device to control the setting of said automatic means in motion and itself controlled by said automatic means to stop reproduction by the reproducer.
20, In a talking machine, the combination of a sound box, means to return said box from its reproduction discontinuance position to its position of reproduction commencement, comprising an actuating member, operating means for said actuating member, a detent and means to release the detent as an incidentto movement of the sound box toward its re roduction discontinuance point, whereby the operatingmeans is permitted to actuate the actuating memberto carry the sound box back to its point of reproduction commencement, said last mentioned means including a lever having an adjustable stop arm, and means to change the effective length of said arm.
21. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier, a motor to drive the same, and a reproducer; of automatic means to lift the reproducerfrom a record on the carrier and carry it to a position cooperating with the'record for starting reproduction, and a manual predetermining device to control the setting of said automatic means in motion to operate one or more times definitely predetermined.
22. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier, 21 motor to drive the same,-and a reproducer; of automatic means to lift the reproducer from a record on'the carrier and carry it to a position cooperating with the record for starting reproduction, and a manual predetermining device to control the setting of said automatic means in mot-ion to operate one or more times definitely predetermined, or an indefinite number of times.
23. In a sound reproducing machine. the combination with a record carrier and operating means therefor, and a movable sound reproducer adapted to operate in connection with said carrier, of means for discontinuing operation of said reproducer. a trip, a connection between said trip and the reproducer whereby the reproducer may move the trip and move independently of the trip, said trip being cooperative with the discontinuing means aforesaid to render the latter operative, and automatic means acting on said trip to permit the movement of the reproducer independently of the trip.
24. Means substantially as claimed in claim 23, wherein the automatic means aforesaid is controlled in its action by the discontinuing means.
25. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and operating means therefor, and a movable sound reproducer adapted to operate in connection with said carrier, of means for causing repeating action of the reproducer after it has completed .a reproducing operation,
trip means. so connected with the reproduceras to move therewith and to permit movement of the reproducer independently thereof, and detent means cooperating with said repeat action causing means and controlling relative movement of the reproducer and trip.
26. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and operating means therefor, and a movable sound reproducer adapted to operate in connection with said carrier, of a control mechanism coacting to cause stopping of reproduction by the reproducer and coacting to effect repeating action of the reproducer with respect to the record after a complete reproducing operation of said reproducer, a trip,
a connection between said trip and the re-- producer whereby the trip may move with the reproducer and whereby the reproducer may move independently of the trip, said trip coacting with the aforesaid control means to place the latter in operation, and. automatically 0 erating detent means coacting with sai trip to control itsmovement with the reproducer and relative move ment of the trip and reproducer.
27. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and operating means therefor, and a movable sound reproducer adapted to operate in connection with said, carrier, of means for causing repeating act-ion of the reproducer after it has completed a reproducing operation, trip means so connected with the reproducer to move therewith and to permit movement of the reproducer independently thereof, automaticall operating detent means cooperating with said repeat action causing means and controlling relative movement of the reproducer and trip, and operative connections intermediate the operating means for the carrier and said control means for actuating the latter.
28. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and operating means therefor, and a movable sound reproducer adapted to operate in connection with said carrier, of means for causing repeating action of the reproducer after it has completed a reproducing operation, trip means so connected with the reproducer to move therewith and to permit movement of the reproducer independently thereof, automatically operating detent means cooperating with said repeat action causing means and controlling movement of said trip with the reproducer, operative connections intermediate the operating means for the carrier and said control means for actuating the latter, and means connecting the said control means with the said detent means whereby the automatic operation. of the latter is effected from the control means.
29. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and operating means therefor, and a movable sound reproducer adapted to operate in connection with said carrier, means for controlling the operation of the reproducer including the lever 33, the trip 32 connected with the reproducer so as to permit relative movement of the latter with respect thereto, and so as to move with the reproducer under certain conditions, means including the detent 38 cooperative with the part 33 to hold the trip stationary on certain movement of the reproducer, and means to shift the reproducer adapted to actuate the detent 38 30. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier and motor therefor, a reproducer adapted to cooperate with a record upon the carrier, and control ling means for the purpose of controlling discontinuance of reproducing action of the reproducer or repeating action of the reproducer in respect to its record traversing operation, said controllingmeans comprising the parts 32, 33 and 38, adapted to operate tolock the part 32 against movement in substantially the manner described, and the part 32 adapted to actuate the part 33 as set forth. a
31. Means substantially, as claimed in claim 30, wherein 'the'cont'rolling means is combined with a reproducer actuator for moving the reproducer from a point of discontinuance of reproduction on the record to a point of beginning of reproduction on said record. I
32. A machine substantially as claimed in claim 30, combined with an operation predetermining device governing the action of the part 33 so that cooperation of the trip 32 therewith will effect discontinuance of reproducing operation of the reproducer. I
33. A machine substantially as claimed in claim 30, combined with an operation predetermining device adapted to be manually set whereby to cause one or more consecutive operations of the reproducer actuator, for causing reproduction repeating functioning of the reproducer.
. 34. A machine substantially as claimed in claim 30, combined with an operation predetermining device adapted to be manually set whereby to cause one or more consecutive operations of the reproducer actuator, for
causing reproduction repeating functioning of the reproducer for efi'ecting a definite or indefinite number of repeating operations of the reproducer.

In a soundreproducing machine, the combination of a record carrier and its operating means, a reproducer to coact with records on the carrier and movable to traverse such records, a trip connectd with thereproducer and adapted to be actuated thereby for controlling predetermined operations of the reproducer, control mechanism cooperating with the reproducer to effectuate said predetermined operations and including means operating automatically wherebythe trip may be adjusted relatively tothe reproducer as an incident 'to manipulation of the latter and released to move with the reproducer on certain movement of the latter.
36. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination of a record carrier and its operating means, a reproducer to coact with records on the carrier and movable to traverse such records, a. trip connected with the reproducer and adapted to be actuated thereby for controlling predetermined operations of the reproducer, control mechanism cooperating with the reproducer to efi'ectuate said predetermined-operations and including means operating automatically whereby the trip may be held stationary whilst movement is given to the reproducer in order to obtain a proper operating adjustment of the trip and permitted to move with the reproducer to an initial position for actuation thereby.
I 37. In a sound reproducing machine, the combinationwith a record carrier and operating means therefor, of a reproducer, mechanism for effecting stopping and repeating of reproduction operation of the reproducer including an operation predetermining device having a part movable a number of ina point of discontinuance o to a point of commencement of reproductioncrements of movement, each increment representative of a complete reproduction action of the reproducer, a member controlled by said predetermining device to discontinue sound reproduction by the reproducer when the predetermining device is in a normal position, means to return the predetermining device to its normal position one step at a time incident to each complete operation of the reproducer, the last means being operable from the operating means for the rec- 0rd carrier, and a device to intermittently and automatically connect said returning means with the record carrier operating means.
38. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination of a record carrier, a motor for driving the same, a reproducer, an actuator for moving the reproducer from a point of discontinuance of reproduction on a record 7 'claim 36, wherein the last named mechanism includes the trip 32, the detent 3 8, the locking lever 33, said parts 33and 38 adapted to lock the trip 32 under certain conditions, the control lever 36 connected with the said actuator lever, and the predetermining device connected with the control lever 36 for actuation thereby.
40. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a record carrier, a motor therefor, a reproducer adapted to traverse a record on the "carrier, and general controlling mechanism including an operation predetermining device setable to positions for causing a definite or indefinite number of re production traversing operations of the reproducer in respect to a record, and actuating means for carrying the re roducer from on a record, and means coo-peratin with said predetermining device whereby it may be operated to stop the reproducer at any point in its movement from the point of discontinuanceof its reproducing action to the pornt'of commencement of its reproducing action.
11. In a sound reproducing machine, the combination with a. record carrier, a motor therefor, a reproducer adapted to traverse a record onthe carrier, and general controlling mechanism including an operation predetermining device setable to positions forcausing a definite or indefinite number of reproduction reproduction traversing operations of the reproducer in respect to a record, actuating means for carrying the reproducer from a point of discontinuance of reproduction on a record to a point of commencement of reproduction and including a lever arranged to engage the reproducer, a driver, a connector between the driver and the lever to actuate the same, a trip carried by the reproducer and detent and locking parts cooperative to engage the trip to hold the same stationary during certain movement of the reproducer, and automatically operable from said driver to release the trip at a predetermined time.
' 42- A machine substantially as claimed in claim 41 in which the connector is adapted to be set by the predetermining device to render the connection between the driver and the said lever operative, whereby to effect a definite and indefinite number of reproducer moving actions of the lever.
43. A machine as claimed in 41 in which the operation predetermining device, operable to control the connection between the driver and said lever, together with means whereby to actuate the predetermining device each time the lever is operated so as to bring said predetermining device to a position causing stopping of reproduction.
44.. A machine as claimed in 41 combined with an instrumentality coacting with the lever to vary at will the movement of the reproducer by said lever and correspondingly vary. the point of commencement of reproduction to which the reproducer may be adjusted in the operation of the actuating means and irrespective of the size of record with which the reproducer cooperates.
45. In graphophone mechanism, the combinationwith a record carrier and a reproducerto traverse a record thereon, stopping means for the carrier, of an operation predetermining device controlling the stopping means to cause starting and stopping of the carrier and movable into one position for starting and another position for stopping actions, and automatic means to operate the predetermining device.-
46. Means as claimed in claim 46, wherein the automatic means renders the stopping means effective for stopping the carrier.
47. In graphophone mechanism, the combination with a. record carrier and a reproduoer to traverse a record thereon, stopping meansfor the carrier, of an operation predetermining device comprising a step by step movable device to control the action of the stopping means, to control starting and stopping of the carrier, and means to actuate the step by step movable device.
48. Means as claimed in claim 47 where in the last named means'is operated automatically for stopping the carrier.
49. Means as claimed in claim 47 wherein the last named means is operated automatically for stopping the carrier together with manual means to shift the step by step movable device for starting the carrier.
50. In graphophone mechanism, the combination with a record carrier and a reproducer to traverse a record thereon, stopping means for the carrier, of an operation predetermining device comprising a step by step movable device to control the action of the stopping means, to control starting and stopping of the carrier, and means to actuate the step by step movable device to stop the carrier and comprising a reproducer shifting device to cause automatic restoration of the reproducer to a position of reproduction commencement.
