IMPROVEMENT IN SHlPS LANTERNS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.` `13,532, dated May 6, 1873; application filed March 18, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, HERBERT SAUNDRRS, of South Kingston, county of Washington, State of Rhode Island, have invented certain Improvements in Ships Lanterns, of which the following is a specification:

I am the inventor of certain improvements in ships7 lanterns, for which Letters Patent No. 135,371, bearing date January 2S, 1873, were granted to me. y

The object of my invention is to provide for means to prevent the flame of the lamp from becoming extinguished by a gust of wind or in a gale, and also to hold and regulate the exit for the products of combustion in a more simple and perfect manner than in the firstdescribed patent. It consists in making the vertically-adj ustable perforated cap double, and the employment of a spring instead of a pin to hold and regulate said double caps.

A strong wind or gust of wind penetrates a single perforated cap too rapidly and extinguishes the flame of the lamp too readily. A number of experiments have demonstrated that a double perforated cap entirely prevents this evil, on which the whole effectiveness of the lamp depends. rI he perforated cap, becoming heated by the products of combustion passing through the perforations, also heats the pin employed heretofore to adjust and regulate the said cap, and makes it almost impossible to handle. A spring, fitting into the perforations, entirely prevents this evil and makes any handling unnecessary. A knob or handle placed on the top of the cap does not become heated, and can be handled with impunity. Y y

In order to describe my invention more fully I refer to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification. i

A represents the lantern. B is the outer cylinder secured to the top of the lantern. D represents the outer perforated cap, fastened at the top E to the inner perforated cap F. G is a spring fastened to the outer cylinder B, pressing against the outer perforated cap I), and fitting into the holes e e of the said cap, thus serving to hold and adjust the double perforated cap by taking hold of the handle or knob H placed on the top E, by aid of which said caps are either depressed or elevated at pleasure.
