Be it known that 1, Anne J. HALL, a c t1- zen of the United States, residing at the city of Cleveland, coruity of Cuyahoga, $tate oi; Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in. Stair Structures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in stair structru'e, and particularly to that class in which the elements are constructed of sheet metal.
The invention consists of metallic sti *1ng-- ers and stair units, each comprising an llltfit gral tread and riser; the risers and treads being provided with lugs adapted to pass through slots formed in the strangers, and after the lugs have been inserted in the slots they are bent at right angles against the sides of the stringers for securely fastening the stair units in place. The invention consists of certain novel features of constructionv and wmbination of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing, 1 and 2 represent the stringers, which are constructed of sheet metal, having their longitudinal edges bent outwardly at right angles as atj3, The
uppcr and lower portions may be formed in any ornamental fashion as indicated at 4, 4
for the purpose of strengthening and. giving rigidity to the stringer. Each stringer is provided with alternate horizontal and vertical slots 5 and 6 throughout its length.
The stair units each consist of a tread 7 and a riser 8. The outer edge of the trend is bent upwardly as at 9, and then rounded at 10, and then bent inwardly, forming a socket for the insertion of the upper edge of the riser 8 of the adjacent stair unit, thereby prducing a finished edge between the tread of one unit and the riser of another unit. The riser will in this manner also afford a support for the longitudinai outer eugeof the tread. In providing the upwardly extending flange or portion. 9 on the tread a recessed portion is produced in the tread for the reception. of a filler, of felt, rubber sheeting or cement not shown.
The ends of the tread and riser of each unit are provided with lugs ll and 12, adapted. to be inserted or passed through the slots 5 and 6, respectively, of the strin ers 1 and 2. It is preferred, but not entire y essential, that the lugs be-bontin alternate directions against the outer walls of the stringers. 2
The logs are made or formed of a size to afford a sufficient support and fastening for the tread and riser, and render a stronger structure than by employing bolts. Furthermore the structure produced. is simpler in construction and consists of-a fewer parts, and can be manufactured and assembled at a smaller cost, than would be possible if bolts and nuts were em loyed.
At the foot of t 1e stair case, as shown in this instance, a hollow sheet metal post 13 is provided. The post has slots 14,14. therein with which slots 15, 15 formed in an angle plate 16, fastened to the lower end of the stringer 2, register. Bolts1l7,17 are adapted to be inserted through the slots of the plate 16 and post 18 for fastening them together. Each bolt 17 is rovided with a tapered opening for the reception of a similarly shaped wodge 18 for securing the bolt in place.

and claim as my invention, is
1. In a stair structure, the combination of a plurality of stair units consisting of a tread and riser, lugs formed at the lateral edges of thetread and riser of each unit, 110
The lower angular edge portion 23 is provided with an upstanding flange 24 and stringers provided with slots, said lugs extending through the slots and bent against the Walls of the stringers for fastening the units and stringers together.
2. 3. In a stair structure, the combination of? a plurality of stair units. each composed of a trend and riser and stringers, one of: said stringers having the edges thereof bent outwardly, lugs on the intern] edges of the treads and risers, said stringers provided with slots for the reception of the lugs, said lugs bent against the walls of the stringers for fastening the stair units thereto, and a molding strip having; inwardly extending portions adapted to engage the outwardly extending edges of one of the stringers for inclosing the lugs.
