JOHN HARDY, 0F PORTLAND, OREGON.
CONVERTIBLE TABLE.
Application filed February 9, 1920.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern e it known that I, JOHN E. HARDY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Convertible Tables, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a foldable camp table of which the body shall constitute a cabinet or case arranged into compact box-like form for carrying about, being especially adapted for carrying on the running board of an automobile; and which furthermore shall be provided with a cover to be placed over the top of the case when the table is folded together, and serving as a protection against the weather; and when the table is stood up for use this cover serves as a lower shelf, and incidentally serves to hold the legs of the table rigid.
My invention further includes a novel and convenient arrangement of removable sides of the case-like body of my table; these sides constituting leaves which may be firmly supported in abutment with the side edges of the case top, and when so arranged constitute lateral extensions of the table.
I attain this and other objects of my'invention by means of the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device showing it arranged for use as a table;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my device showing it arranged in the form of a box ready to be packed on the running board of an automobile;
Fig. 8 is a larger scaled transverse section showing .details of construction;
Fig. 4 is a similar section taken on the broken line 4 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is still another similar section taken on the. broken line 5 of Fig. 1.
My table comprises a cabinet, or case-like body consisting of a bottom (6, ends Z), and top 0, and having open sides. Sides (Z, are movably secured in place by slotted struts e pivoted at their upper ends to the sides (Z and secured to the ends 6 of the case-like body by pins 7- bearing in the slots of the struts. Companion latch members 9 and h on the leaves (Z and ends 6 respectively form a medium for holding the sides securely in the open sides of the body.
rms 2' are pivoted to the under side of and are adapted to be eX- tended laterally from the case tops so as to Specification of Letters Patent.
the latter rigid, and

provide supports for the leaves (Z, and when so extended they project a substantial distance beyond the point of rotation of the leaves on said struts (2, hence these arms support the sides (Z against rotating on the struts, and the latter, cooperatively, hold ghese leaves firmly down on said arms i, see
The sides (Z are further made with dowels j, and the top 0 has slots 7:, into which said dowels fit when the sides are arranged to close the open sides of the case. These dowels j also serve as a support for the sides (Z when arranged as leaves of the table top.
Holes Z are bored vertically in the ends 6, and detachable table legs m having diverging feet are adapted to seat in these holes and form a rigid supporting medium for the table when the latter is being used as such.
A flanged cover a is adapted to be placed over the top of the table body when the leaves (Z are arranged in the open sides of the latter as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, thus the cover protects the top of the case from the'weather when my table is folded together for carrying about.
Said cover a has transverse elongate slots 0 located in alinement with the holes or bores Z of the end pieces of the case thereby adapting the cover to be arrangedas shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and when so arranged the cover it constitutes a lower shelf. At the same time the slotted ends of the cover a engage and lock with said angular lower portions of the legs m, and in so doing hold prevent them from r0- tating in the bores Z of the case ends.
lVhen folded up into box form, as shown in Fig. 2, my table may be used as a container for food, dishes, utensils, and other traveling equipment. When converted into the table form, as shown in Fig. 1, the devices will serve admirably as a table, provided with the additional facilities of the shelves formed by the bottom board a and inverted cover 72.
Having thus described my claim:
1. In a camp table, the combination of a. case-like body, legs adapted for being removable fastened in the ends of the case the lower ends of the legs being bent at coincident angles, and a flanged cover adapted for being placed on the top of said body and further adapted for being mounted on said invention I legs so as to form a shelf therewith, and at the same time to hold said legs rigid.
2. In a camp table the combination of a case-like body, the ends of the latter having sockets, legs adapted for being removable inserted in said sockets the lower ends of the legs being bent at coincident angles, and a flanged cover adapted for being placed on the top of said body and further adapted for being mounted on said legs so as to form a shelf therewith, and at the same time to hold said legs rigid. r
3. In a camp table, the combination of a case-like body, the ends of the latter having sockets, legs adapted for being removable inserted in said sockets the lower ends of the legs being bent at coincident angles and a flanged cover adapted for being placed on the top of said body and providedwith transverse elongate slots at its ends for receiving the angular lower portions of said legs, thereby holding the latter rigid and forming a shelf therewith.
JOHN E.'HARDY.
